Whenever I'm walking the streets of Leipzig, I always stop by St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche). It's open all day, and it's a huge tourist attraction for the city. There are many elements of intrigue when it comes to St. Nicholas.
Johan Sebastian Bach's affiliation with the church is a huge draw. His bust can be seen in this video. The organ is also world famous. It's absolutely massive and the church holds performances with it on a regular basis.
St. Nicholas Church is perhaps most famous for the Monday Demonstrations against the government of the Deutsche Demokratische Republik. The gatherings were peaceful protests that grew in size each week and spread to other cities around East Germany. Protestors chanted We are the people and demanded the right to control their destiny. East German forces never intervened during the protests as they grew too large. The movement is credited, in part, for the Berlin Wall coming down and the unification of Germany.
Architecturally, the church is stunning. The outside is Gothic looking, while the inside is airy and full of light colors - similar to a Rococo style.
Some churches or historical attractions are strict when it comes to photography. As you can see, St. Nicholas Church has no problem with visitors taking photos. However, they accept donations and operate a small gift shop. The building is old, and it's clear that renovations and improvements have been made to bring the place back to its original glory.
It's nice to see such a beautiful building open to the public on a daily basis, that's the way it should be. It would be a real shame to have a place like this closed all the time, except for a religious service. I look forward to going back to St. Nicholas Church; hopefully somebody will be playing the massive organ!

The St. Nicholas Church is one of the major churches of central Leipzig, Germany. Construction started in Romanesque style in 1165, but in the 16th century, the church was turned into a Gothic hall church. Baroque elements like the tower were added in the 18th century.
In the 18th century, several works by Johann Sebastian Bach, who was the music director of Nikolaikirche and of St. Thomas Church from 1723–50, premiered here. The Neoclassical interior dates to the late 18th century. The church rose to national fame in 1989 with the Monday Demonstrations when it became the centre of peaceful revolt against communist rule. By capacity, it is one of the largest churches in Saxony.
Construction of the church began about 1165. It is named after St. Nicholas, patron of travelers and merchants. It was built originally in the Romanesque style (with twin towers) but was extended and enlarged in the early 16th century in the Gothic style. The Baroque main tower was added in 1730; the portal dates from 1759.
The church saw four of the five performances (including the premiere) of the St John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach on Good Friday in 1724, 1728, 1732, and 1749, as well as many of his cantatas and oratorios performed by the Thomanerchor.
More recently, the church has been struggling to find the funds for interior restorations which have been ongoing since 1968. The church organ was renovated from mechanical (tracker) action to pneumatic action in the early 20th century.

1000 Jahre Leipzig - 850 Jahre Nikolaikirche Leipzig
Im Jahr 2015 feiert die Stadt Leipzig „1000 Jahre Ersterwähnung“. In einer fünfteiligen Serie stellt die Leipzig Tourismus und Marketing (LTM) GmbH einzelne Jubilare vor, die eine große Bedeutung für Geschichte und Selbstverständnis der Stadt haben.
Teil 1 wirft einen Blick auf „850 Jahre Nikolaikirche“. Im Gespräch mit Pfarrer Bernhard Stief und Nikolaikantor Jürgen Wolf ist zu erfahren, wie das Jubiläumsmotto „Suchet der Stadt Bestes“ während eines ganzen Festjahres mit Leben gefüllt wird.

Friedliche Revolution - Die Mezzosopranistin Alexandra Röseler ist in Leipzig geboren. Mit den Ereignissen im Oktober 1989 verbindet sie viele Erinnerungen. Im Film spricht sie darüber, wie sie die Zeit damals erlebte.
Am 9. Oktober ist alljährlich der Tag der Friedlichen Revolution. Die Stadt Leipzig feiert dies mit einem Friedensgebet in der Nikolaikirche und dem Lichterfest.
Am 9. Oktober 2018 spielten der BachChor an der Nikolaikirche und das Festivalorchester Leipzig unter der Leitung von Nikolaikantor Jürgen Wolf Musik aus dem Missa Tango von Martin Palmeri. Die Mezzosopranistin Alexandra Röseler sang den Solopart.

Über die früheren Orgeln in der Nikolaikirche ist nur wenig bekannt. Eine Inschrift, die sich zu einer früheren Zeit am Prospekt und im Jahr 2015 an der Orgelbrüstung befindet, gibt zumindest einen Hinweis. Demzufolge soll der Priester Andreas Hagelsten aus Braunschweig im Jahr 1463 das erste Instrument mit zwei Manualen über zwei Oktaven sowie ein Pedal mit einer Oktave Umfang vollendet haben. Experten vermuten, dass es sich dabei um die erste Orgel mit Rückpositiv im Norddeutschen Raum gehandelt haben könnte. Hagelstein wird auch als Erbauer einer weiteren Orgel aus dem Jahr 1478 im Nordteil der Kirche genannt. 1480 setzte ihn die Kirchengemeinde unter diesem Instrument bei. In den Jahren 1617 bis 1619 errichtete Henning Kröger eine neue Orgel, vermutlich mit zwei Manualen und einem Pedal. Das Instrument wurde jedoch beim Einsturz des Hochgewölbes beschädigt und von Hans Hantelmann im Jahr 1706 oder 1707 repariert. Weitere Umbauten nimmt Christian Erdmann Vogel vor, der 1737 ein neues Rückpositiv aufbaut.
Friedrich Wilhelm Winzer nahm im Jahr 1862 und 1863 einen weiteren Umbau vor und setzte ein neues Orgelwerk hinter den alten Prospekt. Vermutlich entfernte er das Gehäuse des Rückpositivs und stellte es zusammen mit einem neuen Orgelwerk in der Dorfkirche Zurow auf. In dieser Konstellation diente das Instrument der Kirchengemeinde, bis es um 1900 wiederum von Ernst Röver umgebaut wurde. Dabei kam auch seine pneumatische Kombinationseinrichtung und eine Kastenlade zum Einsatz. Der Zustand der Orgel verschlechterte sich jedoch zusehends.
1976 erwarb die Kirchengemeinde daher eine neue Orgel. Das einst reichverzierte Instrument wurde von Johann Gottlob Mende geschaffen und verfügte über zwei Manuale und 28 Register.
Vorher befand sich die von 1842 bis 1845 erbaute Orgel in der Freiberger Nikolaikirche in Sachsen. Die Orgelweihe fand am 1. Oktober 1985 statt. Da das Orgelwerk jedoch nicht restauriert wurde, traten bereits zwei Jahre später erste technische Probleme auf. Im Jahr 1995 konnte die Sanierung durchgeführt werden.
