St. Peter is one of the three churches in the old town that characterize the skyline of Zurich. It is situated on a hill in the old town to the left of the river close to the Lindenhof, where Roman settlements and the imperial palace were located. For a long time, the church clock was the only public clock in the city. Due to that tradition, the «Böögg» figure is set on fire during the Sechseläuten festivities exactly when St. Peter shows six o'clock.
The Zurich Opera is located close to the Bellevue and was inaugurated in 1891 with a performance of «Lohengrin». At the beginning it was used for musical theater and drama, and went on to focus on opera, operetta, and ballet after the Schauspielhaus was built in 1926. It was referred to as Stadttheater (city theater) until 1964. Composers such as Ferruccio Busoni, Paul Hindemith, Richard Strauss, Othmar Schoeck, Arthur Honegger, and Frank Martin influenced the musical and theatrical life of Zurich.

Largest church clock of Europe / Grösstes Turmzifferblatt Europas, St. Peter Zürich, Switzerland
wikipedia.org
The clock tower of St. Peter was for centuries Zürich's 'official local time', and all public city clocks had to conform to it. The church clock of St. Peter has the largest tower clock face in Europe, the outer diameter of each of the four church clocks measures 8.64 metres (28.3 ft),[1] the minute hand 5.73 metres (18.8 ft), the hour hand 5.07 metres (16.6 ft), and the minute crack of the large pointer measures 0.455 metres (1.5 ft).

The abbey was founded around 780 by Bishop Chur. In 1167 it was transformed into a female convent. In 1230 this church was replaced by another one of late Romanesque style although parts of the first one still survive. The main nave was rebuilt in 1460 in Gothic style. Zurich One Day Tour in Winter
Zurich One Day Tour in Winter
Zürich is the international metropolis of Switzerland, where culture, nature, business, and fun combine. With the most important highlights ranging from historical spots and natural escapes to food and shopping havens, this one-day guide will help you make the most out of your short but worthwhile stay in this vibrant and culturally rich city.
As a «metropolis of experiences» by the water, with a magnificent view of the snowcapped Alps on the horizon, Zurich offers a unique mixture of attractions – over 50 museums and more than 100 art galleries, international fashion labels and Zurich designs, and the most flamboyant and lively nightlife in Switzerland. Recreational activities range from a visit to the riverside and lakeside bathing areas in the very heart of the city, to a spectacular hike on the Uetliberg mountain.
Also for lovers of art Zurich has a lot to offer. The city alone is home to over 50 museums, some 14 of which are devoted to art. The museum of fine arts, the Kunsthaus Zürich, boasts a significant collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs and videos. In addition, it has an extensive collection of works by Alberto Giacometti. Another highlight is the Rietberg Museum, one of the leading centers of non-European art in the world. Just a stone's throw from Zurich's main station, the Swiss National Museum – housed in an over 100 year old building reminiscent of a fairytale castle – contains the country's most comprehensive collection of exhibits relating to Swiss cultural history. Zurich's museums and galleries aren't the only places to enjoy art: visitors can also admire Giacometti's entrance hall in the main police station, the choir windows by Marc Chagall in Fraumünster abbey, or Jean Tinguely's open-air Heureka by Lake Zurich.
The lively tradition of merchant guilds in Zurich is dating back to the Middle Ages. Equally impressive are their fine guild houses and guildhalls – such as the Zunfthaus zur Waag, open since at least 1303. Like the Grossmünster church, the Lindenhof square and the Öpfelchammer restaurant in the Niederdorf, these venues are now among the city’s cherished emblems.
Zürich is home to one of Switzerland’s most vibrant market scenes, selling everything from vintage clothing to fresh fruits and vegetables and antiques. Here’s our guide to some of Zürich’s best markets, whether you’re an early bird looking to strike a bargain or just want to stroll around the aisles.

Zurich's Medieval houses, contorted, narrow lanes and guild and town halls from the Renaissance period offer an attractive backdrop for world-class entertainment. A tour of the Old Town lets visitors experience Zurich's multifaceted past. The backdrop turns into a living history of characteristic buildings and the people that lived and acted out their lives in them.
The double towers of the Grossmünster (Great Minster) are Zurich's landmark. According to legend, Charlemagne built the towers at the location where the graves of the city saints Felix and Regula were discovered. Further sights worth seeing include the Peterskirche (Peter's Church), which has Europe's largest clockface, and the Fraumünster (Minster of Our Lady), which is known for its stained glass windows by Giacometti and Chagall.
The historic heart of Zurich, the Altstadt, or Old Town, remains the most atmospheric part of the city, with its striking 19th century buildings and winding cobblestone lanes hosting an array of modern cafes, shops and galleries. For visitors to the city, the Old Town makes the ideal starting point for a sightseeing tour of Zurich, sprawling along both sides of the River Limmat and home to many of the city’s principal tourist attractions.
Zurich's two landmark cathedrals—the medieval Fraumuenster (Church of Our Lady) and the Gothic style Grossmuenster—make navigating the Old Town easy, perched on opposite sides of the river and linked by the monumental Munster bridge. From here it’s an easy stroll to the charming Niederdorf district, crammed with quirky boutiques and hip coffee shops.

Zurich's Old Town is everything you would expect from a historical heart of a city, but also of a lively center of modern-day life. It is characteristic by its pedestrian-only streets, paved with cobblestone and lined with picturesque houses, some of which have been standing here since the Middle Ages. Take a stroll around and enjoy the atmosphere, or sit in one of the many local restaurants and cafés and just relax.
Some parts of the historical quarter, such as the Lindenhof, have been built on an area, where human settlements are documented since as early as the 1st century BC. The buildings you can see here are of a much later date, though. The oldest ones have been built in the 13th century AD.
If you aren't much of a history buff, the Old Town may still entice you. There are plenty of places to enjoy the night here and a bustling nightlife, as Altstadt boasts the highest concentration of clubs per square meter in the whole of Switzerland.
