Dom Knigi (House of Books) - St Petersburg
Another style moderne building from the early 20th century, the Singer building was originally built in 1907 to house the famous Singer Sewing Machine Company. The building's cast iron frame allowed the large ground floor windows where passers-by would stop and stare at the women working inside. The building is topped with an elongated dome and glass sphere held aloft by a him and her pair of monumental statues. The sphere was lit up at night by that modern invention electricity. After the revolution, the building became a book store and was recently restored inside and out.

Yeliseyevsky Merchants - St Petersburg
The building on the corner of Malaya Sadovaya and Nevsky prospekt was built at the beginning of the 20th century as a showcase for the Yeliseev brothers' merchandising. With its high steel-framed windows, the four facade statues representing Industry, Trade, Art and Science, and its stained glass, mirrored and dark wood interiors, it remains a high point of style moderne architecture. Nationalized after the October revolution, it retained its elitist associations for the Communist party hierarchy who were allowed to shop here to purchase such delicacies as mandarins, bananas, pineapple, and caviare, delicacies unavailable to ordinary citizens. After a checkered start during the post-Soviet days, in 2010 the city government let the store for a period of 10 years to local businessman and restaurateur Evgeny Pirgozhin, on the condition that it be restored to its former glories. When the shop reopened in spring 2012, it was an immediate hit with locals and visitors alike. The interiors have now been fully restored (with the addition of the central palm tree), fine food merchandisers and staff were imported from France, and no less than three restaurants were opened on the site - a coffee shop on the ground floor, the Mezzanine restaurant featuring a menu from Michelin-starred chef Julien Lachenaud, and the basement Sklad (Warehouse) Number 5 featuring the Yeliseev brothers' own recipes. There are counters for meat, cheese, and wine, patisserie, oysters, caviare, and look out for the chocolate fondues. The only bum note for us are the waxworks figures of the two brothers waving from the mezzanine. Otherwise a fantastic addition to the city's heritage and contemporary gourmet scene.

Welcome to St. Petersburg - Russia Walking Tour - Travel Book
St. Petersburg is the 2nd largest city in Russia and the 4th largest in Europe, located 715 km northwest of Moscow. [1] In addition to being a cultural center, it is also known for its elegant buildings. It is spread over 42 islands on the Neva River along the Baltic Sea. The city, which was founded by Tsar I. Petro on May 16, 1703 to be the gate of the Russian Tsarism to Europe, was the capital of the Russian Tsarist for 200 years. Since 1914-1924, that is, during the period covered by the First World War and the Russian Civil War, German St. St. Petersburg was abandoned and named as Petrograd. After the Great October Socialist Revolution of 1917, the Bolsheviks made Moscow the capital in March 1918. Although Petrograd preserved its importance as a historical city, it became the second important city of the country in terms of politics and economics. The city was named Leningrad between 1924-1991, that is, during the Soviet Union. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the administration of Boris Yeltsin changed the name of the city back to Saint Petersburg. But St. The region where St. Petersburg and surrounding provinces are located is called Leningrad oblast. The city was surrounded by Nazi Germany on September 8, 1941 and remained under siege for 872 days.
Unlike Moscow, which is considered to be an eastern city, Sankt-Peterburg is more European with its population of 5 million and has achieved its purpose of being the gate to Europe. It is also thought to be a synthesis of Venice and Rome when it was founded according to a rumor. [Citation needed] Wide boulevards, calm waters, bridges and some examples of tsarist architecture have caused the city to be called the Venice of the North. The Hermitage Museum in the city hosts large private art collections of tsars and is one of the largest museums in the world. In addition, the houses of Dostoevsky, Pushkin, Anna Akhmatova and Rimsky-Korsakov are also used as museums.
In addition, Fyodor Mihaylovich Dostoevsky's novels Crime and Punishment, Fool, Oppressed and White Nights take place in this city.

D.D.D. was created in 2015 by St.Petersburg trombone player and arranger Anton Boiarskikh as his final project for a master's degree at Conservatorium van Amsterdam. The concept of the project is an experimental interaction between jazz improvisation (from its basis to out harmony) with modern electronic styles, such as Jungle, Dub, Dub Step, Minimal, Tech, House, D'n'B, Hip Hop etc. It was a search of actual musical language that led to the concept. Jazz improvisation is expanding the confines of digital art by the use of spontaneous human creativity.
Basing on fundamental knowledge of classical composition, bebop, modal jazz and analyzing contemporary music styles D.D.D. makes music in real-time using both traditional acoustic and electronic instruments (trombone, saxophone, guitar, synthesizer, drums etc) and digital gadgets (modulators, sound effects processors etc).
Musicians having the same attitude are Jo Jo Mayer & The Nerve, Mark Guiliana Beat Music, Donny McCaslin Quartet, Ari Hoenig Punkbop, Welcome To The Club and others.

Arfur & Shelly Visit Russia - St Petersburg Slideshow Part 7
Arfur and Shelly take the long awaited trip to Russia (it was only on the books for the last 10 years!!!). This is a record of their visits to Moscow and to St Petersburg. What a fantastic place to visit, with friendly people (mostly!) and two very different cities!
