Leipzig is a city in the eastern German state of Saxony. On central Marktplatz, the Renaissance old town hall houses the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig, chronicling city history. Composer J.S. Bach is buried in the late-Gothic St. Thomas Church, known for concerts by its boys’ choir. St. Nicholas Church was a meeting point for the “Monday Demonstrations,” which led to the 1989 overthrow of communism.
'Hypezig!' cry the papers, 'the New Berlin', says just about everybody. Yes, Leipzig is Saxony's coolest city, a playground for nomadic young creatives who have been displaced even by the fast-gentrifying German capital, but it's also a city of enormous history, a trade-fair mecca and solidly in the sights of music lovers due to its intrinsic connection to the lives and work of Bach, Mendelssohn and Wagner.
To this day, one of the world's top classical bands (the Gewandhausorchester) and oldest and finest boys' choirs (the 800-year-old Thomanerchor) continue to delight audiences. When it comes to art, the neo-realistic New Leipzig School has stirred up the international art world with such protagonists as Neo Rauch and Tilo Baumgärtel for well over 10 years. Leipzig is known as the Stadt der Helden (City of Heroes) for its leading role in the 1989 ‘Peaceful Revolution’ that led to the reunification of Germany.
Leipzig acquired the nickname Klein Paris (Little Paris) in the 18th century, when it became a center of a classical literary movement largely led by the German scholar and writer Johann Christoph Gottsched. The city is also the home of the Nikolaikirche (Church of St. Nicholas) – the starting point of peaceful demonstrations against the communist regime which led to German Reunification. The collapse of communism hit Leipzig's economy very heavily (as did communism itself), but after being on the mend for over twenty years, it has emerged as one of the success stories of the New German States.
Traces of Leipzig's history are everywhere: the ring of streets around the city center marking the former course of the city wall, the city trade houses, abandoned and repurposed industrial buildings in Plagwitz, small town structures in the outskirts where surrounding towns were incorporated during phases of rapid growth, the battlefields of the Napoleonic wars in the south and southeast of the city, and much, much more.

MIC Leipzig 2018 #022 - Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig - Geschichte ist unendlich

Stadtgeschichtliches Museum (City History Museum) Leipzig, Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall)
The City History Museum is the historical memory of the city of Leipzig and consists of a network of several museums, each with different topics. Leipzig's grand Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall), is one of the most important Renaissance buildings remaining in Germany.
The city had a town hall from as early as the middle of the 14th century when the citizens of Leipzig felt that a building was required to house a large hall, the council chambers, the offices of the town clerk, city archives and municipal administrative offices, etc. However, the current Renaissance structure of the Altes Rathaus, built in 1556, can be attributed to Hieronymus Lotter, who was a businessman and several times Mayor of Leipzig. The building was renovated between 1905-1909.
The ballroom of the Old Town Hall is 53 metres long and was previously used for celebrations by the Saxon princes, aristocrats weddings, craft festivals and student balls. Court proceedings also took place here. At the top of the building, just below the roof, is an inscription that goes all round the building. It is the longest building inscription in all of Germany. Together with the Council Chamber the ballroom has one of the most attractive interiors in Leipzig and hence its usage for grand festivities.
With the building of the New City Hall in 1905, the city's administrative services were moved to the new building. Between 1905-1909, the Altes Rathaus underwent substantial reconstruction to house the Leipzig Museum of City History. The Leipzig Museum keeps records of all developments and events in Leipzig from the Middle Ages up to the present time. The Museum is one of Leipzig's most visited sights.
The Altes Rathaus is also used for other cultural and concert events in the city of Leipzig. Along the arcade there are many shops selling souvenirs and gifts.

Places to see in ( Leipzig - Germany ) Grassimuseum
The Grassi Museum is a building complex in Leipzig, Germany, home to three museums: the Ethnography Museum, Musical Instruments Museum, and Applied Arts Museum. It is sometimes known as the Museums in the Grassi, or as the New Grassi Museum (to distinguish it from the older building with this name, now home to the municipal library).
The museum is named for Franz Dominic Grassi, a Leipzig businessman of Italian descent, who bequeathed over two million marks to the city upon his death in 1880. This helped pay for a number of new constructions, including the Gewandhaus and the Mende Fountain, as well as the Old Grassi Museum. Built from 1892-95 on the Königsplatz (now Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz), this originally housed the Museum of Ethnography and the Museum of Arts and Crafts, and is now the municipal library.
The old museum became too small for the collections, prompting its director to call for an architecture competition to design a new building, to be paid for with the Grassi bequest. The winning firm designed a building with elements of New Objectivity and Art Deco, based around several courtyards. It was built from 1925-29 (one of the few new museums of the Weimar Era), on the site of the old Johannis Hospital. The urban planner Hubert Ritter had intended for it to be the starting point of an eastward expansion of the city. It originally contained the Johannis Church, demolished in 1963.
The New Grassi Museum was severely bombed in 1943, with the loss of tens of thousands of items. Rebuilding began in 1947, with the first exhibitions in 1954. It was closed from 1981-85 due to a problem with the heating system. It was completely renovated from 2001-05, including the removal of some of the front windows. It partly reopened in 2005, though the Museum of Applied Arts did not reopen until 2007.

Nov. 02, 2014
Historians, participants and former diplomats discuss a retrospective of the 25th anniversary of the end of the Cold War, when 70,000 people in Leipzig, Germany, whose chants of “We are the people!” and nonviolent demands for freedom paved the way for the fall of the Berlin Wall one month later on Nov. 9, 1989.
