Wildfire Threatens Cabins in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
Wildfire Threatens Cabins in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
Pigeon Forge Wildfire
The national guard will fly in two helicopters today to help battle a massive wildfire that has damaged more than 35 cabins in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The blaze has led about 150 people to evacuate. It's one of nearly half a dozen brush fires over the past several days that's already torched more than 200 acres.Sunday's fast-moving fire caught both visitors and locals off guard.Patricia Gaylon, property owner, I just don't know if it's any of our property or not. Some of our friends live up that way and I was just concerned about them.Chief Tony Watson, Pigeon Forge Fire, it's a huge fire. A large amount of resources are up here. It's been rough. It's been the roughest I've ever seen it. These houses are put close together, and the first portion of this started out as a house fire. It led to several just next to it just catching on fire.On Saturday, some of the same firefighters battled a much smaller brush fire at the nearby Dollywood theme park.Across the country, crews are battling more wildfires. In Florida on Sunday, smoke from a forest fire mixed with fog to cause numerous traffic accidents on I-95.Saturday in South Carolina, a brush fire destroyed more than 100 homes near Myrle Beach. And in Colorado on Friday, fierce winds helped fuel a wildfire at a state park near Fort Collins forcing hundreds of evacuations. The wildfire season off to an early, and dangerous, start.

A unique history. 1786 A westward-moving settler, Mordecai Lewis, leaves Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and settles in East Tennessee. John Sevier, the first governor of Tennessee, encouraged Virginians such as Lewis to come to this area following the Revolutionary War. In 1794, he was appointed Coroner of Sevier County as well as a Justice of the Peace.
1807Lewis makes his home along what we now know as the Little Pigeon River after receiving a land grant from Governor Blount, where he acquired a total of 151 acres along the river. His grandson would later build and operate the first gristmill.
1817 Issac Love, the son-in-law of Mordecai Lewis, inherits the land after Lewis’s death and builds an iron forge along the west branch of the river. It was a logical setting for a forge. Iron ore was found in the hills, timber could be burned to create charcoal to fuel the fires, and the river was a source of unending power for the large hammer. 1841 the first post office is located inside the mill. “Pigeon Forge” was born, named by Love after the passenger pigeons that would roost in the trees along the river during their southern migration and his father’s iron forge.
1859 John Sevier Trotter becomes the second owner of the mill and iron forge and adds a saw mill to his operation. 1861 The Civil War begins. Tennessee is the last state to secede from the Union. East Tennessee, in particular, was split between the Union and Confederacy. The mill owner, John Trotter, was a Unionist, and on the second floor of his mill, he sets up secret knitting looms to produce clothing for Union soldiers. There was also a makeshift hospital on the third floor. 1921 the mill begins producing electricity for the community. Not until 1933 did electricity flow to Pigeon Forge from the city of Sevierville. 1940 President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicates the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at Newfound Gap, the mountain pass located in the center of the park and the name of the road that runs through the park today in both Tennessee and North Carolina. Tourism really starts to take off for the Great Smoky Mountains.
1952 Tourism begins to flourish in Pigeon Forge, the city widens the parkway to make way for more automobile traffic.
1961 Pigeon Forge incorporates as a municipality.
On June 10, 1975 the Old Mill is recognized for its importance to the community and its place in American history by being placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
1977 Only after 147 years of use, the Old Mill’s original grinding stones need replacing. They certainly were a good purchase back in 1830!
1995 The Stouts decide to retire and offers to sell The Old Mill to the Blantons & Frizzells. The Cornflour Restaurant name is changed to the Old Mill Restaurant.

The Hinsons-A Trip To The Alter
History
The Original Hinsons were a prominent southern gospel group. Consisting of siblings Ronny, Kenny, Larry and Yvonne, they first sang together in 1967 after being asked to sing during revival services at a small church in Freedom, California. Though they had never sung together as a unit, they soon found themselves a popular favorite in churches and concert appearances along the west coast of the United States. Initially, thy were known as The Singing Hinson Family. However, as time and their popularity progressed they became known simply as The Hinsons. Later, they were known as The Original Hinsons to distinguish themselves from Bo Hinsons' group, The New Hinsons now known as The Hinsons.
Younger brother Larry tells the story behind the Hinsons signature song: It was written in 1970, in the downstairs bathroom of a church then called The Pentecostal Tabernacle. We had been rehearsing songs that Saturday evening and found the necessity to have new material to stage. Ronny disappeared for several minutes, only to return to the church sanctuary brandishing a long fluttering piece of toilet paper. The title of the song was none other than The Lighthouse. It was first recorded the next year by The Goodmans and then by The Hinsons. Songs of Calvary and Journey Music, (then owned by Rusty Goodman,) co-published the song. Elvis recorded it soon thereafter... 'The Lighthouse' quickly became a huge hit in southern gospel and remains one of the most recorded songs in the genre. From 1973 till 1980 The Hinsons were the co-hosts of the popular television show The Gospel Singing Jubilee. Although the Hinsons were an extremely popular touring group with excellent record sales, they were considered radical for their concert style, which was far more ministry oriented than most of the more established professional groups. Always innovators, the group recorded several albums in the mid 1970s with an eclectic mix of songs that weren't considered true southern gospel. Songs like 'Shinin' In' and 'Look what He's done for me,' had a decidedly contemporary feel, while others such as 'This Joy is Mine' had an undeniably country sound.
The family disbanded the group in 1988, but Larry Hinson approached their record producer at Calvary Music Group, suggesting a reunion project involving the original four founding Hinson members. They reunited one final time for One More Hallelujah which was completed in the fall of 1992. The album featured the song Joy Comes In The Morning, and spurred the 13 city One More Hallelujah Tour in 1993. The tour was cut short when lead singer, Kenny Hinson was diagnosed with kidney cancer. He died on July 27, 1995 at the age of 41.
Ronny, the eldest of the Hinson brothers, is a renowned songwriter, having written over 10 #1 songs on the southern gospel charts, and over 100 songs that charted in the top 10. He is also a sought after producer, and continues to perform.

Ruby Tuesday's Pigeon Forge. TN 4-3-2016
Right down from my house I saw a bunch of smoke. Knew something was on fire, but what? This place just went through renovations like 2 to 3 weeks ago. Guess it didn't go so well. Not too suprised really, the service in this place was worse than discusting. You can probably find my yelp comment a few months ago online. Hope no one got hurt.

Larry Knox / Knox Brothers (Secret Place) 11-20-16
Knox Brothers retirement concert #2 of 2 (11-20-16)
Larry Knox, third of Marion's four sons, represents the Second Generation that was a bit of a subset of the Knox Brothers concerts for a time. Larry currently sings with Bethel Mountain Band from here in the mid-Willamette Valley.
After more than 48 years of singing together with only biological siblings, the Knox Brothers gave the community two concerts to mark the end of their active singing chapter as they transition into the retirement chapter of their performing lives. The concerts were held at the First Assembly of God Church in Lebanon, Oregon, November 19 and 20, 2016, to a nearly full house each night. To best explain who the Knox Brothers are, I am here using (with his permission) a tribute that friend Ike (Marlin) Eichelberger wrote (with the exception of the last two paragraphs, which YouTube deemed made it too long for the allotted description space):
Once upon a time, a young couple settled near the small farming community of Harrisburg, in Oregon's picturesque Willamette Valley. Vernon and Elsie Knox chose this location to carve out a living and raise their young family, which would grow to include six boys.
Despite being raised in a conservative Mennonite congregation that only allowed acapella music, the boys developed a fondness for musical instruments, and eventually began to share their talents with others. In April 1968, the four oldest brothers performed for the first time as a singing group, accompanied by a lead and bass guitar. They would become known as the Knox Brothers Gospel Band. At the time, their ages ranged from their early 30's to their early 20's. As the two younger brothers came along, they were informed that a piano and drums were needed in the band, so those are the instruments they learned to play. Arnold joined the family group around 1972 at the age of 15, and Ed joined in 1973 at the age of 22.
Amazingly, this family band has been playing continuously since that time with the same six members! It has been over 48 years since the oldest brothers started making concert appearances!
The Knox Brothers Gospel Band features Marion (79) singing lead and baritone; Wayne (75) playing lead guitar, harmonica and singing bass; Paul (73) playing bass guitar and singing tenor; Victor (70) sings lead; Ed (65) plays drums and sings bass, lead and whatever else is needed; and Arnold (58) plays piano/keyboard and sings tenor. These gentlemen do not play music as an occupation. They have played music for the most part on the weekends, while maintaining careers and raising their families. Such an undertaking not only requires sacrifice, commitment and dedication on the part of the group members, but on their families as well. Their occupations have ranged from farmers, cabinet maker, auto body technician, UPS delivery driver, radio station personality and church music director.
Over the years, the Knox Brothers experiences in music have been many and varied. Their career highlights include performing over 2,500 concert appearances; hosting many, many concerts with other artists, both local and national; performing in front of 17,000 people on the Gaither Homecoming Concert stage in Portland; opening for Pat Boone at the University of Oregon's McArthur Court in 1976; taking 15 tours to the east coast; doing a snowbird tour to southern California and Arizona each winter for over 25 years; appearing on Gospel Music TV's World Premier in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee in 1999; over a twenty year span they hosted tour groups on 12 cruises to Mexico and Alaska; performed before the fireworks at their hometown of Harrisburg's 4th of July celebration for 38 years, while being honored as the Grand Marshall of the parade a few years ago; hosted charter bus tours to the Great Western Gospel Music Fan Festival in California for 11 consecutive years (5 bus loads at it's peak); Wayne was invited to play guitar for the musicians jam session at the Fan Festival; recorded almost all of their albums in their own studio, which they built in a barn on the family farm.
Included among the national gospel music artists they hosted in concert are the Melody Boys Quartet, Dixie Melody Boys, Cathedral Quartet, Florida Boys, Kingsmen, Stamps Quartet, Master's Five, Palmetto State Quartet, Gold City, King's Heralds and others, along with many local and regional groups.
