Pondicherry Sightseeing Full Movie
Pondichery is famous for Arobindo ashram and Auroville matrimandir. However, there are many other interesting places to see. This video shows the complete sightseeing of Pondicherry and around. Some of the interesting places include the main sea beach (Pomenado beach), Dupleix statue, French buildings, French War memorial, Ambedkar mandapam, Le Cafe, Mahatma Gandhi statue, Neheru statue and the beautiful views of the sea beach, he old light house (near Secretariate), the new light house (south to Pondy towards Birampatnam), beautiful statues and view points near the main Pondy beach (Pomenado beach). The video also shows Bharati park, Manakula Vinayaka temple and Panchavatee Anjaneya temple.
Manakula Binayaka Temple is one of the most popular temples in Pondicherry located near Arobindo ashram. The other beautiful temples we visited are Kalathisvaran temple, Bedha puruseswar or Iswaran temple, Vardaraj Perumal temple. We hired a scooter and visited Panchavati Anjaneya temple which is about 10 kms from pondichery on Dindivanam road. Panchavati Anjaneya is a huge 36 ft granite idol.
Auroville is a universal township about 10 kms from Pondicherry. People of many different countries settle in auroville. The most important attraction of auroville is the matrimandir which is located at the center of it. The matrimandir is a globe shaped large structure for doing meditation inside.
This video shows the views of six beautiful beaches of Pondichery. (i) Pondichery Main beach or Pomenado beach, (ii) serenity beach (iii) Repo beach or Aurovil beach, (iv) sandy beach, (v) Birampatnam beach, (vi) Paradise beach. In my consideration Pondichery main beach is the most beautiful beach followed by Paradise beach. Other beaches are also good having their own features. For example, serenity beach is full of colorful fishing boats, repo beach is suitable for swimming (swimming jackets are available on hire) etc.
The botanical garden near bus stand is another attraction in Pondichery. It is more than double the size of Bharati park. There is a toy train for children running through the garden (Rs 10/- ticket). A statue of two big bulls look very attractive at the center of the garden. There are many medicinal plants and many rare plants in the garden. You can see the rest in the video.
This video shows three beautiful churches of Pondicherry. One is Sacred heart church near Pondicherry railway station. This is a very beautiful church and located at a very prominent location. The second church is Immaculate Conception cathedral on the mission street (or cathedral street) in Pondichery. The third church is the Lady of Health church in Ariyakuppam about 6 kms from Pondichery on Cuddalore road.
Paradise beach is a small island in the Bay of Bengal. One has to go about 5 kms in boat from Chunambar to reach Paradise beach. The width of the paradise beach is about 100 meters in some places. The length is just about more than a kilometer. We went to the Chunnambar boat club by a scooter from Pondicherry. Read more details of my experience in my blogs.
Arikamedu archeological site is about 8 kms from Pondicherry. One has to come upto Ariyakuppam on Cuddalore road and then take a left turn to go to the place. You can find the ruined parts of some very old buildings It is a few acres of land maintained by the archeological survey of India.
Birampatnam is about 10 kms south to Pondicherry. One has to come southward from Pondichery on Cuddalore road and take a left turn at Ariyakuppam to reach the beach. There are three interesting points to see in Birampatnam, one is the church in Ariyakuppam (shown in a separate video) where you take a turn for the beach, second is the amma temple near the beach (visible at the beginning of this video) and third is the beach. The video shows the beach in detail.
Ousteri Lake or Ossudu lake about 20 kms from pondichery. We went from pondicherry to Ousteri lake by a scooter. This is a huge lake with boating facility. However many of the boats are not in working condition. If you have more time in Pondichery it is not a bad idea to visit this place atleast for an hour. The place is less crowded as it is far from the city.
Tiruvakkarai is about 40 kms from Pondichery. One has to go through Oustery lake on the way. So we first visited Oustery lake and then went 20 kms further including 6 kms very poor road to find the Fossil Park. However after reaching the place I realized that the effort was worth for such a place. There are several hundred tree fossils which are estimated to be 20 million years old.

Pondicherry And French Collaburation
Pondicherry is a popular tourist destination in South India. The city has many colonial buildings, churches, temples, and statues which, combined with the systematic town planning and planned French style avenues, still preserve much of the colonial ambiance.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram
While the sea is a popular draw for tourists, Pondicherry no longer has the beautiful sand beaches that once graced its coastline. The breakwater to the harbour and other hard structures constructed on the shore caused extreme coastal erosion and the sand from Pondicherry's famous Promenade Beach was permitted to disappear entirely. As a result of the town's seawall and groyne construction, the beaches further up the coast to the north have also been lost. An enormous deposition of sand has accrued to the south of the harbour breakwater, but this is not a commodious beach and is not easily accessible from the town.
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, located on rue de la Marine, is one of the most important ashrams in India, founded by the renowned Freedom Fighter and spiritual philosopher Sri Aurobindo. Auroville (City of Dawn) is an experimental township located 8 km north-west of Pondicherry. It is meant to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities.
There are a number of old and large churches in Pondicherry, most of which were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. A number of heritage buildings and monuments are present around the Promenade Beach, such as the Children's Park & Dupleix Statue, Gandhi statue, Nehru Statue, Le Café, French War Memorial, 19th Century Light House, Bharathi Park, Governors Palace, Romain Rolland Library, Legislative Assembly, Pondicherry Museum and the French Institute of Pondicherry at Saint-Louis Street.
Puducherry is also popular for its eateries that cover a wide variety of cuisines ranging from French, Indian and Italian to Mexican, Thai and Chinese. Some restaurants also serve a unique Indo-French cuisine that gives tourists a taste of Puducherry's colonial influences. Most popular eateries include Baker's Street, The White Town Cafe, Zuka, Carte Blanche and La Maison Rose.
Puducherry Botanical Gardens is located south of the New Bus Stand. Chunnambar Backwater resort is situated 8 km from Pondicherry, along the Cuddalore Main Road. This tropical resort is flanked by a quiet-flowing creek on one side. Boating and tree house[clarification needed] are very popular.
Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Devasthanam on Manakula Vinayagar Street is a Hindu temple, which houses Lord Ganesha. Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple was in existence before the French came and settled in Pondicherry i.e. before 1666. According to Sasthra, Lord GANESHA is named in 16 types based on his various forms, out of which this god facing the east coast near the Bay of Bengal was named as Bhuvaneshar Ganapathy, now called as Manakula Vinayagar. In Tamil, 'Manal' means sand and 'Kulam' means pond near the sea. Earlier, there was full of sand around the pond. So, the people called the god as Manal Kulathu Vinayagar [means God near the pond of sand]. Later, it was named as Manakula Vinayagar.
Thirukaameeswarar Temple is one of the ancient temples located in a rural town called Villianur (the ancient name is Vilvanallur, meaning vilva marangal niraindha nalla vur), which is located about 10 km away (towards Villupuram) from Pondicherry town. This temple is renowned as Periya Koil Big Temple. The prime god is Lord Shiva and the prime goddess is Goddess Kokilambigai. In addition, there are also other Hindu gods such as Murugan, Vinayagar, Thakshanamoorthy, Perumal, Bhramah, Chandikeshwarar, Natarajar, Navagrahah, and 63 Naayanmaars. The pioneers[clarification needed] in this temple say that the age of this temple is about 1000+ years. It is thought to have been built by one of the Chola kings. There is also a huge temple pond. The Ther Thiruvizha procession is celebrated at this temple.
Apart from sight seeing places for the tourists, there are a number of various bakeries and restaurants that cater to the Europeans taste buds. For others there are many Indian, Continental, Chinese and fast food restaurants to choose from. Pondicherry being once a French colony has good French cuisine i.e. Cafe des Arts, Rendezvous, Le Dupleix, Villa Shanti. Some other notable restaurants for pizzas Cafe Xtasi, Auro Pizza and Tanto Pizzeria and for bakeries Hot Breads, Daily Breads, Bon Bakes, Grand Bakery and Zuka Choco-La.
