Levon Williams & the Stax Museum
Last week was all about Elvis, but this week we take a peak at another side of Memphis music that's had just as big of an impact on the world: Stax. Levon Williams is the Curator of Collections and Registrar at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. As a life long hip hop fan, Levon was listening to Stax music long before he even realized it; Stax was being sampled by many of his favorite hip hop artists. After seeing a DVD of the 1972 Wattstax festival, he was hooked. He dug deep learning the stories behind the music and eventually landed his current job helping preserve the history of Stax Records. A year after relocating from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Levon says he can see that the culture that birthed Stax back in the 60s is still alive and well in Memphis.

An Evening With Al Bell, Former Leader at Stax Records, Motown Records. He is a servant leader, music producer, and Arkansas native.
Thursday, February 23, 2012, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The African and African American studies program of the University of Arkansas hosted An Evening with Al Bell on Thursday, Feb. 23, bringing recording legend Al Bell to Fayetteville to speak to faculty and students and the public in the Arkansas Union Theatre. A reception followed with jazz music.
Bell, born in Brinkley, Ark., grew up in Little Rock and became a local radio DJ (radio station KKOY he talks about in this video series) before making the jump to Memphis-based WLOK. After a successful on-air career, he joined Stax Records in 1965. At Stax, Bell eventually led the legendary label as its chair, where he worked with soul music icons Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, the Staples Singers, and The Emotions. With Hayes, Bell produced the landmark album Hot Buttered Soul and spoken-word albums by comedians Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor.
In one of the videos here, Bell talks about coming up with the words and inspiration for the Staples Singers successful song I'll Take You There.
At a time when the Civil Rights Movement engulfed the United States, Bell, a veteran of the movement who had worked with Martin Luther King Jr.'s Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Atlanta, built Stax Records to become one of the largest black-owned businesses in the United States.
After he left Stax, Bell continued to influence the music industry when he became president of Motown Records. After helping to engineer the sale of Motown to MCA/Boston Ventures Group, Bell began working with artists including Prince and Tag Team under his Bellmark label. Bell was instrumental in producing the 1993 Tag Team hit Whoomp! (There It Is) which went platinum four times over, selling more than 4 million copies and reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This song continues to be played at sporting events worldwide. He also released Prince's 1994 hit single The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The African and African American studies program is an academically focused interdisciplinary program based in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. It promotes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the history, culture and identity of Africans and African Americans. Students may elect to pursue a combined major or a minor in African and African American studies with any approved major offered at the University of Arkansas.
An Evening with Al Bell is also sponsored by the Sam M. Walton College of Business' Office of Diversity Programs.

Memphis is a city on the Mississippi River in southwest Tennessee, famous for the influential strains of blues, soul and rock 'n' roll that originated there. Elvis Presley, B.B. King and Johnny Cash recorded albums at the legendary Sun Studio, and Presley’s Graceland mansion is a popular attraction. Other music landmarks include the Rock 'n' Soul Museum, Blues Hall of Fame and Stax Museum of American Soul Music.
Memphis is the second largest city in the state of Tennessee and the second largest metropolitan area in the state after Nashville. The state rests in the southeastern portion of the United States. Memphis, with a population totaling more than 653,350 as of 2013, is also the county seat for Shelby County. The city's claims to fame include Graceland, the mansion Elvis Presley lived in during his later years. Maybe more importantly, Memphis is considered by many to be the home of blues music.
Memphis is an older city that has been through a lot. With that said, the city has developed a rugged yet, colorful sense of character that locals identify with. A lovely mix of old and new, Memphians have worked hard to build a vibrant community while keeping the city's old-time charm. Memphis has much more to offer than just Graceland with its lively neighborhoods and constant renewal.
Although downtown Memphis has experienced quite a rebirth and renewal in the last few years, the center of the city is older and while new development is hard to find, revitalization of old areas is beginning to take shape. Areas such as Beale Street and Mud Island have become relatively safe and citizens once again have a vested interest in making downtown safe, exciting, and a great place to visit and relax after decades of abandonment.
Whether visiting or moving to the area, from May to October make it well worth your while to visit the Memphis Farmers Market which formed and began in 2006 - it is one of the brightest shining stars of the early Spring, Summer, and through Mid-Autumn. A word of caution: Memphis is extremely hot in the summertime, and the humidity can make you feel even hotter! Those who have trouble tolerating high heat and humidity may wish to avoid visiting during July or August.
Memphis has a certain baroque, ruined quality that's both sad and beguiling. Though poverty is rampant – Victorian mansions sit beside tumbledown shotgun shacks (a narrow style of house popular in the South) and college campuses lie in the shadow of eerie abandoned factories – whiffs of a renaissance are in the air. Neighborhoods once downtrodden, abandoned and/or otherwise reclaimed by kudzu – South Main, Binghampton, Crosstown and others – are being reinvented with kitschy boutiques, hipster lofts and daring restaurants, all dripping with Memphis' wild river-town spirit.

Memphis soul
Memphis soul, also known as Memphis sound was the most prominent strain of Southern soul. It is a shimmering, sultry style produced in the 1960s and 1970s at Stax and Hi Records in Memphis, Tennessee, featuring melodic unison horn lines, organ, bass, and a driving beat on the drums.
Many of the songs in this style were performed by vocalists backed by the house bands for Stax and Hi Records. The Memphis soul sound was different from the Motown Sound from Detroit. After the rise of disco in the late 1970s, Memphis soul declined somewhat in popularity. Stax Museum of American Soul Music is dedicated to preserving the Memphis sound.
