Old Faithful Geyser Erupting (Upper Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming)
The most popular and predictable geyser in Yellowstone National Park. Contray to popular belief, it's nether the tallest nor largest geyser in Yellowstone National Park. The wait time lasts roughly between 35 minutes and 2 hours. We were here for 1 hour 20 minutes!! It wasn't a large eruption, however, we managed to catch a glimpse of another geyser erupting towards the end of Old Faithful's eruption. Most of the people watching whom had waited for a while quickly ditched Old Faithful to check it out!
Old Faithful is a cone geyser located in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, United States. Old Faithful was named in 1870 during the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition and was the first geyser in the park to receive a name.[3][4] It is one of the most predictable geographical features on Earth, erupting every 35 to 120 minutes. The geyser, as well as the nearby Old Faithful Inn, is part of the Old Faithful Historic District.
Eruptions can shoot 3,700 to 8,400 US gallons (14,000 to 32,000 L) of boiling water to a height of 106 to 185 feet (32 to 56 m) lasting from 1.5 to 5 minutes. The average height of an eruption is 145 feet (44 m).[7] Intervals between eruptions can range from 35 to 120 minutes, averaging 66.5 minutes in 1939,[8] slowly increasing to an average of 90 minutes apart today.[9] The time between eruptions has a bimodal distribution, with the mean interval being either 65 or 91 minutes.
More than 137,000 eruptions have been recorded. Harry Woodward first described a mathematical relationship between the duration and intervals of the eruptions in 1938.[8][10] Old Faithful is not the tallest or largest geyser in the park; those titles belong to the less predictable Steamboat Geyser.[4]
Yellowstone National Park is a national park located primarily in the U.S. state of Wyoming, although it also extends into Montana and Idaho. It was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872.[4][5] Yellowstone, the first National Park in the U.S. and widely held to be the first national park in the world,[6] is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular features in the park.[7] It has many types of ecosystems, but the subalpine forest is the most abundant. It is part of the South Central Rockies forests ecoregion.

Norris Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park- Wyoming
The Norris Geyser Basin is the hottest geyser basin in the park. The tallest active geyser in the world is Steamboat Geyser and it is located in Norris Basin. Unlike the slightly smaller but much more famous Old Faithful Geyser located in Upper Geyser Basin, Steamboat has an erratic and lengthy timetable between major eruptions. During major eruptions, which may be separated by intervals of more than a year (the longest recorded span between major eruptions was 50 years), Steamboat erupts over 300 feet (90 m) into the air. Steamboat does not lie dormant between eruptions, instead displaying minor eruptions of approximately 40 feet (12 m).
Hiking in Yellowstone - Upper Geyser Basin
Hiking in the Upper Geyser Basin area of Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone boasts more than half of the geysers on earth – many of them are found in the Upper Geyser Basin – including Old Faithful. Many other geothermal features are also found in this area – the most visited place in all of Yellowstone.

YELLOWSTONE: Geysers of Yellowstone - The Greatest American National Park
“Geysers of Yellowstone” (Geysers, Waterfalls and Hot Springs of First American National Park)
Yellowstone National Park is a nearly 3,500-sq.-mile wilderness recreation area atop a volcanic hot spot. Mostly in Wyoming, the park spreads into parts of Montana and Idaho too. Yellowstone features dramatic canyons, alpine rivers, lush forests, hot springs and gushing geysers, including its most famous, Old Faithful. It's also home to hundreds of animal species, including bears, wolves, bison, elk and antelope.
Most of the park lays in the caldera of latest eruption of one of the two world Super volcanoes (the other one is 76,000 years old Thoba in Sumatra, Indonesia). Yellowstone erupted 3 times during last 2 Mil. years. Last eruption occurred 600,000 years back and because last 3 eruptions were remarkably evenly distributed at the period of last 2 mil. years it makes Yellowstone at least hypothetical candidate for next Super volcano civilization terminal eruption. But even when activities in caldera during last 10 years were more frequent that the standard is set I am sure that next eruption will not happened during our lifetime.
So at least Hollywood disaster prone “pop culture” created fictitious end of the world starting with Yellowstone eruption – as was the case in feeble minded Sci-Fi action movie “2012”.
However park, its inhabitancy and landscape beauty will be always treat for everybody who will decide the spend vacation in this North-West corner of Wyoming.
Cheers and Enjoy

Yellowstone is the first and oldest national park in the world and is famous for its wildlife and geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser. It has many types of ecosystems, but the subalpine forest is dominant. It is part of the South Central Rockies forests ecoregion.
With over 10,000 hydrothermal features that includes more than 300 geysers, Yellowstone is home to over one-half of the world's hydrothermal features.
Yellowstone National Park is located primarily in the U.S. state of Wyoming, although it also extends into Montana and Idaho. It was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872.

Old Faithful Geyser, Yellowstone National Park - HD
Another clip from my coffee fueled craze through Yellowstone National Park.
Old Faithful is a little known geyser in Wyoming. Discovered in 1976 by Nathaniel Langford, it was later named Old Faithful by Henry Washburn as an homage to his lucky dice after having won the water feature in a game of chance. Back then it doubled as a laundry service for the military, but this practice was discontinued after the army deemed it too efficient/productive.
Eruptions are predictable every 90 minutes to within a 10 minute radius year round, except on national holidays when the park shuts down operation to conserve water. The geyser can shoot up to 8400 gallons of water to heights reaching 185 feet. No one knows how many litres or meters it produces and it remains a mystery to this day. The predictable nature of the thermal activity stems from scientists psycho-analysing Old Faithful and concluding it to have Obsessive Compulsive disorder.
Though not the largest or sexiest geyser in the park -that title belongs to Steamboat Geyser- Old Faithful makes up for it with its consistently predictable eruptions & charming personality.

Yellowstone Park Geyser Compilation HD
Yellowstone Park Geyser Compilation HD
A geyser is a spring characterized by intermittent discharge of water ejected turbulently and accompanied by steam.
The formation of geysers is due to particular hydrogeological conditions, which exist in only a few places on Earth, so they are a fairly rare phenomenon. Generally all geyser field sites are located near active volcanic areas, and the geyser effect is due to the proximity of magma. Generally, surface water works its way down to an average depth of around 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) where it contacts hot rocks. The resultant boiling of the pressurized water results in the geyser effect of hot water and steam spraying out of the geyser's surface vent (a hydrothermal explosion).
Over one thousand known geysers exist worldwide. At least 1283 geysers have erupted in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States, and an average of 465 geysers are active there in a given year A geyser's eruptive activity may change or cease due to ongoing mineral deposition within the geyser plumbing, exchange of functions with nearby hot springs, earthquake influences, and human intervention.
Jet-like eruptions, often referred to as geysers, have been observed on several of the moons of the outer solar system. Due to the low ambient pressures, these eruptions consist of vapor without liquid; they are made more easily visible by particles of dust and ice carried aloft by the gas. Water vapor jets have been observed near the south pole of Saturn's moon Enceladus, while nitrogen eruptions have been observed on Neptune's moon Triton. There are also signs of carbon dioxide eruptions from the southern polar ice cap of Mars. In the latter two cases, instead of being driven by geothermal energy, the eruptions seem to rely on solar heating via a solid-state greenhouse effect.
Yellowstone is the largest geyser locale, containing thousands of hot springs, and approximately 300 to 500 geysers. It is home to half of the world's total number of geysers in its nine geyser basins. It is located mostly in Wyoming, USA, with small portions in Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone includes the world's tallest active geyser (Steamboat Geyser in Norris Geyser Basin), as well as the renowned Old Faithful Geyser, Beehive Geyser, Giantess Geyser, Lion Geyser, Plume Geyser, Aurum Geyser, Castle Geyser, Sawmill Geyser, Grand Geyser, Oblong Geyser, Giant Geyser, Daisy Geyser, Grotto Geyser, Fan & Mortar Geysers, & Riverside Geyser, all in the Upper Geyser Basin which alone contains nearly 180 geysers
