Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania. It lies in the valley of the confluence of Neris and Vilnia rivers and has 527,930 inhabitants (2013 statistics).
Upper Castle (Gediminas Castle), Arsenalo St 5 (Climb up to it from the Cathedral Square or take the funicular on the other side of the hill, facing the river). Erected on a top of a large hill-fort in the 9th–14th centuries by Dukes of Lithuania. Approximately in the very end of 13th century the Seat due to strategic reasons was transferred from Trakai to Vilnius and the castle was substantially reconstructed. The first castles were wooden, and only in the beginning of 15th century everything was rebuilt in brick and stone. The preserved ruins of Gothic Ducal Palace and surrounding fortifications remain to date. The top of the largest and the only survived tower of the defensive wall offer the best view of Vilnius.
Tower of Gediminas Castle (Gedimino pilies bokštas). The red-brick tower, a part of the Upper Castle fortifications. Houses an exposition of archaeological findings and other exhibits. National flag was first raised on its top in 1919 when the country regained independence from Russia. Since then the tower is an important state and historic symbol of Vilnius and of Lithuania itself.
Vilnius Cathedral ((Vilniaus arkikatedra bazilika)), Katedra Sq 2. An original wooden cathedral was built here in 1251 on a site of the pagan temple. Later, in 1387, a Gothic style cathedral was built. Now it is a Classical style cathedral built in 1783-1801 to the project of architect Laurynas Gucevičius. There were 27 crypts of different depth and size under the Cathedral floor. Often overflowed during the spring floods, many times devastated by soldiers looking for treasures during the wars and upheavals, 1968-1989 the crypts were put in order, permanent exposition was arranged. Visiting crypts is permitted only accompanied by a guide.
Cathedral Square & the Bell Tower, Katedra Sq 1. The tower base is round, while the Baroque belfry features octagonal plan. Approximately between the Bell Tower and Cathedral, in the square, look for a particular tile with a word Stebuklas (Lithuanian for miracle) written on it. Stand on it, make a wish and turn around three times.
Town Hall (Vilniaus rotušė), Didžioji St 31 (Central part of Old Town). Central building of the Old Town. The first Gothic style Town Hall was built in 1432 in the very same place as it is today. It was reconstructed several times until the city clock tower collapsed and damaged the significant part of the main building. The new Classical style building to the design of architect Laurynas Gucevičius was completed in 1799 and so remains till date. Since 2001 it operates as a public institution, organizes representative and protocol events, various ceremonies, celebrations of public holidays, overall about 300 cultural and educational events are held every year.
Užupis District. Part of Old Town, a largely unrestored area primarily occupied by artists, dreamers, squatters, and drunks. In 1998, the residents unofficially declared the area to be an independent republic, with its own president, anthem, flag, and constitution. Great to visit on April Fools day, when mock border guards stamp passports and the entire area erupts into a party.
St. Anne's Church (Šv. Onos bažnyčia), Maironio St 8, LT-01124 Vilnius (Old Town near Užupis). One of the most beautiful churches in Vilnius and in Lithuania. Very small in size, but a very beautiful example of gothic architecture. There is a legend that when during his conquests Napoleon came to Vilnius and saw this church he said he would like to take it on his palm and bring to France.
Church of St. Francis and St. Bernard (Šv. Pranciškaus Asyžiečio bažnyčia), Maironio St 10 (Old Town near Užupis, just behind the St. Anne's Church). Construction completed in 1564. Together with St. Ann's Church compiles a one of the most important ensembles of Gothic architecture in the country.
Bernardine Garden (Bernardinų sodas), Maironis St (Old Town between Gediminas' Castle and the Church of Saint Francis and Saint Bernard), Former Sereikiškės Park, it has been substantially reconstructed in 2013.

Vilnius In Your Pocket Vilnius City Tour
Vilnius, Lithuania: As We Travel Europe
Vilnius Lithuania: As We Travel Europe
We’re in Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania. It’s really cute here. There are many places of worship. We’re going to start the day by visiting the Gate of Dawn. This 16th Century gate is the only gate of the town wall still standing, and this is probably because it houses the Chapel of the Virgin Mary and a black and gold Virgin Mary icon, which the people here believe brings them miracles. When the Russians came here and invaded, they refused to destroy this, because they were afraid it would bring them bad luck. We can barely even see the miracle icon from down here, but it’s still such a special. It’s really quaint. It’s not just a gate, there’s also a chapel on top of the gate and there’s a mass going on. There’s singing, there’s a lot of prayer. It’s a very special vibe here. It’s really cool to see people walking through the gate and people doing the crossing on their chest. Yeah. Every single person does that. There’s definitely a special atmosphere around here. Amazing.
We’re in Cathedral Square, probably the most popular and most recognizable square in the whole of Lithuania. It’s has three attractions, the Vilnius Cathedral, the Bell Tower, and the Stebuklas, a very special tile. Let’s have a closer look. It really does look like a lighthouse. It’s not a lighthouse though, we’re at the Bell Tower, and in 17th century, they installed a clock here without a minute hand, so you could only tell the time every 15 minutes. It’s kind of funny, I think. And once a week, the guy had to walk up the 92 steps to re-wind up the clock so it would continue working for the rest of the week. The first thing we notice when we walk into the church were all the paintings around here, there are so many of them. We thought it was kind of strange, but we found out that this church was built as a church 700 years ago, and then it was turned into—do you hear how loud she’s singing?—it was turned into an art gallery, and also a car repair workshop. That’s kind of funny. And, then in the 80s, it was turned back into a church again, so I guess that explains all the paintings around here. It’s kind of funny, huh? Ok, so here it is, the miracle tile, Stebuklas. I actually thought it was going to be a bit bigger, but it’s actually just the same size as any other tile around here. So, what you do is that you make a wish, and then you turn clockwise three times, and apparently your dreams will come true, so here we go. A bit dizzy.
Ok, so I made my wish. Let’s go and get some lunch.
Having some lunch, we ordered some pancakes, very popular in this part of Europe. You get savory pancakes and sweet, and they’re really, really nice. Also ordered some local Lithuanian beer. Perfect lunch. The beer here is cheaper than a Coke, crazy. We’re walking up to Gediminas Castle which is from the 14th century, and it was used to protect the city. Today it’s very popular to come up here and get a great view over the city, so let’s go check it out.
維爾紐斯-立陶宛(2).維爾紐斯主教堂.City Tour.Vilnius-Lithuania.Crowne Plaza Vilnius.Full HD 1080p

Trendy bars and cafes in the Old Town
Where the Neris and Vilnele rivers meet in southeastern Lithuania lies the capital city of Vilnius. Founded as the country’s principle city in 1323, Vilnius has also served as the centre of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Located some 300 km to the east of the Baltic seashore, the city has no true port, making it, like Moscow, a capital deep inland. A fair sized city, Vilnius boasts a population of 550,000 inhabitants and, with nearly 70 percent of the city made up of leafy parks, it is one of Europe’s greenest cities. Hop on one of airBaltic's regular flights to Vilnius International Airport to start a great holiday.
Languages
Labas! (Hello!) Lithuanian, whose only close relative is Latvian, is the official language of Vilnius. Russian is widely spoken and understood, although younger generations will be up to speed with English. A city-break in Vilnius does not require learning either Lithuanian or Russian, but a few phrases may come in handy, especially when lifting a glass to say cheers to your host. Either Oplia or I sveikata will do, as long as there is good eye contact.
See and Do
The old town is the most magnificent part of Vilnius, with one of Europe’s largest groupings of historic buildings. Baroque architecture prevails with a few outstanding pieces in other styles, including the Gothic St. Anne’s Church, said to have been even the envy of Napolean, who sought to pocket the tiny church on his return to France. It is simply stunning, no matter how many times it’s seen. Archcathedral Basilica, first a wooden church constructed in 1251 and then rebuilt several times over the centuries is another strong piece of the city’s architecture, complete with some spooky catacombs beneath for those daring enough to venture in. Otherwise, the faint of heart can enjoy a photo history of the city inside the upper part of the church.
Here is where the Lithuanian magic begins. Outside in the square, find the Stebuklas (meaning Miracle) tile, make a wish and spin round three times to have your desire granted. This little stone marks the Vilnius end point for the human chain or Baltic Way connecting the three Baltic capitals during a protest a few years before the fall of the Soviet Union.
Climb up to Gediminas Castle from Cathedral Square to see this beautiful red brick castle built by the Dukesof Lithuania in the 14th century. Turn and look out for some extraordinary views of the city. The city has several museums of note, including the Lithuanian Art Museum, with collections of local art and some international pieces and the House of the Signatories where the Act of Independence of Lithuania was signed in 1918.
For nightlife, get out to the Old Town where many hotel bars, clubs and trendy cafes await, along with the locals, who know how to create a great time. If possible, treat yourself to a little Krupnika, traditional Lithuanian honey liquor, to get into the full mood and style of Vilnius.
For great service, fly to Vilnius with airBaltic!

Vilnius In Your Pocket - Stebuklas (Miracle Stone)
Vilnius In Your Pocket editor Andrew Quested on Stebuklas, the miracle stone in front of the Cathedral.
One of the ordinary paving stones, about halfway between the cathedral and the bell tower, has been replaced with a not-so-ordinary paving stone. It's the 'miracle stone', and it's tucked under a piece of glass that has recently been replaced so that you can actually see through it (a miracle in itself round here). Embedded into the miracle stone, in coloured letters, is the Lithuanian word for miracle -- STEBUKLAS. It's written in a circle with a single S forming both the start and the end of the word. The stone marks the point where a couple of million hand-holding Balts joined together and formed a human chain that spanned the 650km between Vilnius and Tallinn. The tile has become a symbol of freedom and hope and, supposedly, can make your dreams come true. Stand on the tile, make a wish, and turn full-circle clockwise.
