Stein am Rhein, Switzerland
The Rhein flows out of Lake Constance. At this point a small historical town called Stein am Rhein sits in the Canton of Schaffhausen. As you walk the historic streets, you will be transported back to the medieval period. All of the street plans remain intact. You will also see shape of the wall (now houses) surrounding the town and the intact gates sealing it off.
Stein am Rhein began as a small fishing village. It gained notoriety when Emperor Henry II relocated St. George’s Abby there from Singen. His motive was to make his presence known at this important intersection of land and water travel. Today you can still enjoy some of the town’s original feel with the frescos on buildings, half-timbered architecture, St. George’s Monastery, the Ludwig museum, and the oldest church in Canton Schaffhausen, which was built in the 3rd century AD and dedicated to John the Baptist. However, much of the town needed restructuring after it was bombed by the U.S. in 1945.

Stein am Rhein is a municipality in the canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland. It is situated along the lower end of Lake Constance, where the lake becomes the Rhine River again.
The town has a well-preserved medieval centre, retaining the ancient street plan. The site of the city wall, and the city gates are preserved, though the former city wall now consists of houses. The medieval part of the town has been pedestrianised and many of the medieval buildings are painted with beautiful frescoes.
Stein am Rhein is home to a number of buildings that are listed as Swiss heritage sites of national significance.

Stein am Rhein: Charming Medieval Town in Switzerland
Just after Christmas, we took at day trip to Stein am Rhein, which is in the border area with Germany along the Rhine river. It's about a one hour journey by train from Zürich.
Many of the buildings in the town date back to the Medieval era featuring timbered houses with lots of thematic murals painted on the side. St. George the dragon slayer is thematic throughout town, including his namesake church and monastery (now a museum in Summer).
We took in the Christmas market, which is one of the few remaining after Christmas day in Switzerland. We toured the two main churches in town as well as the back streets, making it home in time for a Winter's nap.
If you have extra time, you can visit the Schloss, or Hohenklingen castle at the top of the hill overlooking the town. It has been in place since the year 1200 and has been renovated in modern times. Due to time constraints, we did not visit the castle, but will in a future episode.
