After living in Stellenbosch for almost 10 years (2 years with my wife), we actually walked through the Botanical Gardens for the first time.
There are so many amazing plant species to be seen.

Lovely Stellenbosch is a university town in South Africa's Western Cape province. The city is surrounded by many vineyards. The town's oak-shaded streets are lined with cafes, boutique stores and contemporary art galleries. Cape Dutch architecture gives a sense of South Africa's Dutch colonial history.
The Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden - located in the historical center of Stellenbosch is the oldest university botanical garden in South Africa. This compact garden houses an enormous diversity of plants, both indigenous to South Africa and exotic. Of particular note: the Pygmy Rwandan water lily is extinct in the wild, but successfully grown here.

Saturday 26th March 2011, Stellenbosch Flying Club hosted the Young Falcons and gave them a taste of flying in a real aircraft. Each eagle flew an extended circuit at FASH.

Stellenbosch in the Cape Winelands
Stellenbosch - the oldest and most beautiful town in the Winelands. On a stroll through the town centre, the visitor is impressed with the many well-maintained Cape Dutch buildings from the founding times of the Cape Colony. At the Dorp Museum one can visit Cape Dutch houses from different eras. The town is prouf of its university. It was founded in 1887 and is respected as one of the best universities in South Africa.
In the surroundings of Stellenbosch, quite a few famous wine estate are situated. Always worth a visit is Boschendal, one of the oldest Wine Estate in the country. Boschendal also runs an excellent restaurant. On the weekends people get together for lunch in the garden under the shady old oak trees.

Cape Town Slideshow #2- Hermanus, Botanical Gardens, Stellenbosch and Table Mountain
This is Part 2 of 2 slideshows of our vacation in Cape Town in Sept, 2011. We start out on this trip in the land-based whale watching capital of the world, Hermanus. Not only do we see some huge Southern Right Whales, but some beautiful rock outcrops for viewing the whales, penguins on the beach and some lovely blue surf on the scenic waterfront of this nice village. Then we see some amazing exotic flowers at a botanical garden. Then we see the historic Dutch town of Stellenbosch. After that some brightly painted houses back in Cape Town, a visit to see a talented man making flowers from Coke cans in the large township of Kayelitscha. Then a trip up top of Table Mountain is the high point of our visit. We finish the video with a little relaxing beach combing a short walk from our B&B as we kill our remaining time before leaving to catch our flight back to Seattle.

A botanical garden or botanic garden is a garden dedicated to the collection, cultivation and display of a wide range of plants labelled with their botanical names. It may contain specialist plant collections such as cacti and succulent plants, herb gardens, plants from particular parts of the world, and so on; there may be greenhouses, shadehouses, again with special collections such as tropical plants, alpine plants, or other exotic plants. Visitor services at a botanical garden might include tours, educational displays, art exhibitions, book rooms, open-air theatrical and musical performances, and other entertainment.
Botanical gardens are often run by universities or other scientific research organizations, and often have associated herbaria and research programmes in plant taxonomy or some other aspect of botanical science. In principle, their role is to maintain documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display, and education, although this will depend on the resources available and the special interests pursued at each particular garden.
The origin of modern botanical gardens can be traced to European medieval medicinal gardens known as physic gardens, the first of these being founded during the Italian Renaissance in the 16th century. This early concern with medicinal plants changed in the 17th century to an interest in the new plant imports from explorations outside Europe as botany gradually established its independence from medicine. In the 18th century, systems of nomenclature and classification were devised by botanists working in the herbaria and universities associated with the gardens, these systems often being displayed in the gardens as educational order beds. With the rapid rise of European imperialism in the late 18th century, botanic gardens were established in the tropics, and economic botany became a focus with the hub at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, near London.
Over the years, botanical gardens, as cultural and scientific organisations, have responded to the interests of botany and horticulture. Nowadays, most botanical gardens display a mix of the themes mentioned and more; having a strong connection with the general public, there is the opportunity to provide visitors with information relating to the environmental issues being faced at the start of the 21st century, especially those relating to plant conservation and sustainability.
