Step into the Void. Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix.
Step into the void in Chamonix
It's an invitation that's not for the fainthearted: 'Step into the Void' is the name of a transparent glass cube that simulates the sensation of stepping off the mountain cliff in the French Alps.
Located atop the Aiguille du Midi, altitude 3842 meters, in the Mont Blanc Massif range, daredevils step into the glass box Pas dans le Vide suspended more than 1,000 meters off the valley floor for an unparalleled panoramic view of their snowy surroundings.
Three years in the making, the structure is built from three layers of tempered glass and can withstand winds of more than 220 km/h and a maximum temperature of 60°. The attraction is accessible by the Aiguille du Midi cable car, a 20-minute journey from Chamonix.
It's the latest glass-covered attraction to take visitors to new heights, following the Skywalk, a glass walkway overlooking the Grand Canyon, and the CN Tower in Toronto, which features a glass-bottom floor 1,122 m above ground.

Step into the void in Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix.
High up in the French Alps, on the top terrace of the Aiguille du Midi mountain peak, sits a new five-sided glass structure called the Chamonix Skywalk_ Step Into The Void.. The installation was inspired by the Grand Canyon's glass skywalk, but it takes the concept to the next level. Instead of looking out over a railing, visitors can hover 1,035 meters (3,396 feet) above the valley in an enclosed transparent box, surrounded on all sides by custom-made 12 mm (1/2 inch) glass. The skywalk opened to the public on December 21, 2013.
Visitors enjoy the snowy summits of the French Alps (including the spectacular Mont Blanc to the South), and the bravest of them are warmly invited to have a look below. With nothing standing between them and the blissful one kilometer void (a sheer drop of 12,604ft), than a 12 mm (1/2 inch) platform of glass enforced by steel frames, this is one experience they are unlikely to forget anytime soon. Access to the adventurous cabin is provided via cable car ride- officially the highest in Europe.
Exposed on the face of the Mont Blanc at 3842 m, this unique structure design represents a true technological innovation in glass and steel architecture, it can withstand winds of more than 220km/h and a temperature range of 60C. Perfectly integrated in existing buildings, this new element will have very little impact on the overall perception of the building and site as a whole, a spokesman for the Compagnie du Mont Blanc stated.

There may be a new attraction above Chamonix, the glass box called Step Into the Void, but Roch Malnuit is too impatient to wait in line...
Roch Malnuit went up to the Aiguille du Midi to celebrate getting his new wingsuit - and where he was going, there were no lines, no stress, just jeans and a trucker hat to bring him to the wingsuit exit point with a rappel and a jump directly back into Chamonix.

*EPIC* long run in Chamonix, France
Running in the French alps in Chamonix / Mont Blanc, this is one of my last big weeks training before taking on Ultra Pirineu 94km +6200m in Catalunya October 5th.
In this run I aimed to spend 8 hours on my feet climbing up Le Buet through the Nature reserve de Passy, along Le Brevent. It was an epic day to be running in the mountains.
I'm here to inspire and make people laugh along the way. Follow along for more every day adventures and general positive thinking.

The name Aiguille du Midi is alleged to translate literally as Needle of the Mid-day on the basis that the mountain lies south-east of Chamonix and, when seen from in front of one of the town's churches, the sun passes over its summit around noon.
The Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m / 12,605 ft) is a mountain in the Mont Blanc massif within the French Alps. It is a very popular tourist destination and can be directly accessed by cable car from Chamonix. It receives half a million visits a year and puts visitors as close to Mont Blanc as they can without having any mountaineering experience.
Cable car
The idea for a cable car to the summit, the Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi, was originally proposed around 1909, but did not come into operation until 1955 when it held the title of the world's highest cable car for about two decades. It still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 m to 3842 m. There are two sections: from Chamonix to Plan de l'Aiguille at 2,317 m and then directly, without any support pillar, to the upper station at 3,777 m (the building contains an elevator to the summit). The span of the second section is 2,867 m (1.781 mi) measured directly, but only 2,500 m (1.6 mi) measured horizontally. Thus it remains the second longest span width, measured directly. The cable car travels from Chamonix to the top of the Aiguille du Midi – an altitude gain of over 2,800 m – in 20 minutes, costing around €57 for an adult-ticket from Chamonix and back.
Summit
The Aiguille summit contains a panoramic viewing platform, a café and a gift shop. Even in summer, temperatures in the open viewing areas can reach -10 °C, and visitors require both warm clothing and protection from very bright sunlight. Because of the danger, tourists are unable to leave the visitor facilities on the Midi's summit. However, mountaineers and skiers are able to pass through a tunnel to reach the steep and extremely exposed ice ridge to descend to the glacier below.
In December 2013, a glass skywalk called Step into the Void opened at the top of the Aiguille du Midi peak (3842 meters high). The view is 1035 meters straight down, and one can see Mont Blanc to the south. A further tourist development currently under construction (as at 2015) is 'Le Pipe' – a tubular walkway that will completely circle the summit.
During summer months only, the Vallée Blanche Cable Car crosses peak-to-peak from Aiguille du Midi to Pointe Helbronner (3,462 m) at the Italian side of the Mont Blanc Massif. Pointe Helbronner is served by another cable car, Skyway Monte Bianco, to the village of La Palud near the Italian town of Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley. This makes it possible to travel by air from Chamonix, France to Courmayeur, Italy – a route normally traversed by the highway running through the Mont Blanc Tunnel.
