Stepped Tanks of Hampi
The ancient water tanks remain some of the ruined city’s most beautiful architecture.
The ruins of Hampi, once a grand city in the Indian state of Karnataka, were once home to more than 250,000 people in the Vijayanagar Empire, and filled with Hindu temples. The abandoned city is now dotted with hundreds of individual ruins, home to countless architectural wonders.
Among the most beautiful ruins of Hampi are the pushkarnis, ancient water tanks. Like many Hindu temples in India, Hampi’s majestic temples have accompanying stepped tanks or basins used for religious and ceremonial purposes. Though thousands of miles away, water in the pushkarnis was considered part of the Ganges, Hinduism’s most sacred river, and therefore sacred.
The pushkarnis all follow a similar architectural form, designed symmetrically as either rectangles or squares. Each generally has several large tiers which contain multiple steps in semi-pyramidal from, leading down to the next level. Many of the pushkarnis were surrounded by pillars, like those at the Pattabhirama Temple, all of which added to the sense of grandeur.
These sacred tanks were integral parts of each temple complex. The stepped tanks were used for ritual bathing and cleansing before prayers. They also performed important ritualistic functions for festivals. At the end of Ganesh Chaturthi, the festival celebrating Ganesh, the idol of the god must be submerged in water in order to ritualistically dispose of it, a practice known as visarjan.
The steps carved into the sides of each pushkarni allowed for worshippers to easily get in and out of the water. The pushkarnis were fed with the water of the nearby Tungabhadra River through a series of canals and aqueducts. While some, like the tank at the Krishna Temple, are no longer functional, others still receive some water through the ancient water systems.

Hampi - Visit to Queens Bath, Stepped Tank & Elephants Stable
Queen's Bath
---------------------
This is the first ruined structure you would see when you enter into the Royal center from the Kamalapura-Hampi main road.
For some mysterious reasons this was called as the queen’s bath. But in all probability this was a royal pleasure complex for the king and his wives.
The whole building is made with a veranda around facing a big open pond at the middle. Projecting into the pond are many balconies. An aqueduct terminates in the pond.

Elephant Stables
--------------------------
One among the few least destroyed structures in Hampi, Elephant Stable is a major tourist attraction. This long building with a row of domed chambers was used to ‘park’ the royal elephants. There are 11 domed tall chambers; some of them are inter- connected. The center one is specially decorated and big. Probably the musicians and the associated band troupes had been using this during ceremonies involving elephant processions.
The whole building looks symmetric with respect to this central hall. The tower of the central hall resembles (though mostly destroyed) more like that of temples. However the five pairs of domes on either side are of Islamic in style. They are better preserved and of alternating patterns.

Stepped Tank
----------------------
The Stepped Tank is constructed using finely finished blocks of black stones. This Tank was probably used by the royals for religious purpose. The beautiful tank is about 22 square meters and about 7 meters deep. It has five distinct tiers, each fitted with steps set in a pleasing pattern. The marks on the tank and individual blocks indicate the direction of flow of water. The water to this tank was drawn through the intelligently designed stone channels which are well preserved till date.

Mahanavami Dibba and Queen's Bath in Hampi
The Mahanavami Dibba is one of the most impressive structures in Hampi. It is a beautiful stone platform that is located within the Royal Enclosure of Hampi. It was built during the period of the Vijayanagara Empire in the typical Vijayanagara style of architecture.
It is also known as the Dasara Dibba . The imposing platform attracts a large number of tourists throughout the year.
The Mahanavami Dibba attracts attention as one of the tallest structures in the Royal Enclosure of Hampi. The stone platform has a height of about 12 metres. It is one of the first things that visitors notice as soon as they enter the Royal Enclosure.
The Queen’s Bath in Hampi is a colossal bath that exemplifies the architectural excellence prevalent during the days of the Vijayanagara Empire. It is located close to the entrance of the Royal Enclosure in Hampi.
Constructed during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire, the Queen’s Bath impresses visitors even today, more than 500 years after it was built.
The Queen’s Bath is believed to be constructed by Achyuta Raya for the women of the royal family of Vijayanagara. Though named as the Queen’s Bath, it was in all probability used as the private bathing chamber of the king and his queens. It is also believed that the lavish bath was a royal pleasure complex. This belief is due to the location of the bath, which is outside the Royal Enclosure.

Hampi - Surreal Sunrise - Matanga Hills
Being at the centre of Hampi, and also the highest point, Matanga hilltop is the best spot to get an aerial view of Hampi and it's environs.
Matanga Hill is one of the important locations mentioned in the Hindu mythology, Ramayana. The place was the hermitage of Sage Mathanga.
The view from the top is interesting, especially from the eastern side where you can get an aerial view of the Achyuta Raya’s Temple complex; at south, the cart trail and Turthu Canal winding through the banana plantations; at north the chain of hills and the river that flows along its ridges; at west the Hampi settlement with the tower of Virupaksha Temple dominating.

:: Pushkarni ::
The art of the stepped tank is geometrically large at the Royal Center at the ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire. The tank is in between the modern town of Hampi, made up of green diorite and has no drain facility. It was filled with what is called as aqueducts. One of the main branches of these aqueduct supplied water to the tank, one such aqueducts which was discovered while digging the ground by the archeologists led to the discovery of this tank.
:: Queen's Bath ::
One of the most important bathing pavilions of the Royal Center are the Queens bath.
:: Tallarigata Gate ::
This is the main entrance point of from Hampi to the ancient town of Kishkinda(Anegundi)
:: Underground Shiva Temple ::
For some curious reasons, this temple dedicated for Lord Siva was built many meters below the ground level. For this reason, almost all the time the sanctum and the core parts of the temple are under water, restricting entry to the inner areas.A water canal system too is visible around the main temple. But this canal is dry and you can walk down to a point from where it’s impossible to go further. It has been believed that this is one of the oldest temples in Hampi.
:: Underground Shrine Chamber ::
Located in the middle of Royal enclosure, this subterranean structure is reached by a flight of steps to the northwest. These steps descend to a narrow corridor provided with engaged columns that surround a central chamber on four sides. Within this chamber are four free-standing columns (bases only preserved) with engaged columns against the walls and at the corners.Clearly, the columns and brackets belong to the pre-Vijayanagara period, and Column shafts have curved and angled motifs with lotus buds, behind which are recessed vertical bands.
This underground chamber may have functioned as a storeroom or treasury, judging from the narrow (easily guarded) entrance and thick concrete roof (now mostly missing). It is not certain if any other structure was erected over the chamber at an upper level, as there has been much restoration at the surface.
:: Hazararama Temple ::
Hazara Rama Temple is situated in the middle of the Royal Center and was once used as a place of worship by the royal families. Inscriptions in the temple indicate that it was built by the 15th century. The temple is known for the bas – reliefs carvings and inscriptions that illustrate the mighty Ramayana epic and the Mahanavami festival on their inner and outer walls. Depictions of elephants, horses attendants, dancing girls, armoured soldiers indicate the royal presence in this temple. This temple carvings and paintings give an exclusive and admiration for the Vijayanagara artists.
Although Hampi was conquered by the Muslim rulers and defeated to ruins. The ruins were preserved by the UNESCO and taken over as a World Heritage Center.

A quick tour of Hampi | Must visit place in Karnataka | Tata Nexon roadtrip
All about must visit places around Hampi in just 5 minutes.
Steps Together present the trailer of the new vlog series, Hampi - A Time travel.
Hampi is one of the most popular destinations in India. Situated on the banks of Tungabhadra river in Ballari district of northern Karnataka, the place attracts a huge crowd from all over the world. Hampi was the glorious capital of mighty Vijayanagara empire in the 13-14th century. Historical stories state that Hampi was a very prosperous and wealthy town filled with extraordinary temples, farms and trading markets. By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world’s second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India’s richest at that time.
The Vijayanagara empire was defeated by the Muslim Sultanates in the 15th century. The precious monuments and temples were destructed very badly during the fall of the Vijayanagara empire. The Archaeological Survey of India conducted excavation in the area and the results can now be seen in the form of ruins of this great empire. The group of monuments of Hampi is declared as UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986 and the monuments are well preserved.
Surrounded by hills filled with huge boulders, lush green agricultural lands, ancient priceless monuments at each and every corner of the town, Hampi is a must visit place in India. The rich temples are scattered all around the town and need proper planning to avoid missing any of the attractions.
The Tungabhadra river broadly classifies Hampi into two parts – 1) Hampi center side (Kamalapura side) and 2) Anegundi side. Hampi center side contains almost all the tourist destinations and is usually filled with tourists. Anegundi side is on the other side of Thungabhadra river and is usually less crowded. It is often called the hippie island.
The major Hampi center attractions (the one on the Kamalapura side) can be grouped as follows. The places within each group can be covered by walk:
Group 1 – Hampi Bazar, Virupaksha temple, Hemakuta Hill temples, Sasivekalu Ganesha, Kadlekalu Ganesha, Monolithic bull, and Krishna temple.
Group 2 – Ugra Narasimha and Badavi Linga (these are on the way from Royal enclosure to Virupaksha temple)
Group 3 – Royal Enclosure (Queen’s bath, Mahanavami Dibba, King’s Audience Hall, Stepped Tank, and Public tank), Hazara Rama Temple, and Zenana Enclosure (Basement of queen’s palace, Lotus Mahal, Elephant’s stables, and watchtowers)
Group 4 – Monolithic Bull, Mathanga Hill, and Achyutaraya temple
Group 5 – Vittala Temple complex
On the Anegundi side, the main attractions are Anjanadri Hill, Gagan Mahal, and Sanapura Lake.

Hampi Utsav 2020 | Laksmi Narasimha, Badavi Linga & Queen's Bath | Mahanavami Dibba
In this 4th episode of Hampi video series, we are exploring Laksmi Narasimha, Badavi Linga, Queen's Bath, Stepped Tank and Mahanavami Dibba of Hampi.
#Hampi #KarnatakaTourism #StepsTogether
Lakshmi Narasimha (Ugra Narasimha) Idol
We left Krishna temple complex at 4.10 PM and headed towards the popular Lakshmi Narasimha statue. This huge idol is easily noticeable from the main road itself. The iconic monolithic idol is the largest statue in Hampi. The idol is damaged majorly so much so that people often call it as Ugra Narasimha even though it is a representation of Lakshmi Narasimha.
The original idol had the image of Goddess Lakshmi sitting on the lap of Narasimha. But, the idol of Lakshmi had been completely demolished during the fall of Vijayanagara dynasty and thus making the impression of Ugra Narasimha. It is said that even now we can see the hand of Goddess Lakshmi idol resting on the back of Narasimha. But, you cannot see this because entry inside the enclosure is restricted.
Badavi Linga
Next to Lakshmi Narasimha idol, you can find the largest Shiva Linga of Hampi known as Badavi Linga. It is also housed in a small chamber with only one opening at the front. The Shiva Linga is very big and lower portion of the linga is always submerged in water. It is believed to be constructed by a poor woman hence the name Badavi Linga (Badavi means poor lady in Kannada). We left Badavi Linga at 4.30 PM and headed towards Royal Enclosure.
Queen’s Bath:
After visiting Badavi Linga idol, we headed towards Royal Enclosure. On the Royal Enclosure side of Hampi, the first attraction you will get to see is Queen’s bath.
This is the place where queen used to take bath. However, many theories decline this and suggest that it is a place used for recreational activities. Whatever be the case, it is a beautiful structure one cannot miss. It has an empty pond in the middle and a beautiful open pavilion with small windows. There are steps on one side through which one can get to the pond area. We spent time there till 5 PM and headed further towards the Royal Enclosure area.
Mahanavami Dibba:
The first structure you get to see in the Royal Enclosure is the huge Mahanavami Dibba. Mahanavami Dibba is a large stone platform built by Krishna Devaraya of Vijayanagara dynasty to celebrate his victory over Udayagiri. The structure is more beautiful than you see in the photos. When I Had a look at the photo of this place before visiting, I did not find it interesting at all, but the reality is quite different.
You need to climb about 25-30 big steps to reach the top. The side walls of the platform have a well-carved array of sculptures. At the top, there is nothing except a big plain stage. This is from where kings used to watch the march past of the army, cultural celebrations during Dusshera, sword fights, and other cultural activities. Now, if you go on top and have a look, you can find the ruins of the Royal Enclosure. Though it is sad to see the renowned town in such condition, never miss to sit there for some time and imagine the glorious past of the place. At the backside of the platform also, there are steps to climb. You can climb up from the front steps and climb down using the rear steps to cover the structure completely.
Stepped Tank:
From Mahanavami Dibba, we walked towards the stepped tank which is in the same enclosure. This stepped tank was excavated in the 1980s and is one of the beautiful water tanks. Well maintained by the ASI, the tank has steps in the formation of pyramids next to each other making it look elegant. The water of this tank was believed to be used for religious purposes. Next to this tank is the public tank. This is a bigger and normal looking tank. There is no water in the public tank currently. Apart from these, there is a king’s audience hall in this royal enclosure.
