Walking The “Slaughter Pen” at Stones River National Battlefield In Murfreesboro, Tennessee
This is one of the most chilling sites of the Stones River Battlefield. Many men were wounded and killed in this area on New Year’s day of 1863. The eventual Union victory would become a crucial starting point in the confederacies’ ultimate defeat in the Civil War. I was sweating profusely and had goosebumps during this walk, something I’ve never felt before.

History Break Nathan Bedford Forrest - Stones River National Battlefield
On July 13, 1862, in what is known as the first Battle of Murfreesboro, Nathan Bedford Forrest and his raiders’ (Texas and Georgia Rangers) defeated Union units (9th Michigan Infantry & 3rd Minnesota) camped at Oaklands and at the Courthouse in Murfreesboro.
Stones River National Battlefield Park Ranger and historian Jim Lewis, along with volunteer reenactors, provided visitors with a living history demonstration at Oaklands Historic House Museum and at Stones River Battlefield in 2011.
Born in Chapel Hill, Tenn., July 13, 1821. Nathan Bedford Forrest rose to become a Lt. General in the Confederate Army. Remembered for his innovative strategy and tactics, some historians consider him the greatest cavalry general in American history. He was a wealthy planter and slave trader but not trained at West Point.
In July 1861, Forrest enlisted with the Tennessee Mounted Rifles as a private, offering to buy horses and equipment with his own money. He later decided to recruit and equip his own cavalry regiment. Known for raiding, which wasn’t taught at West Point, Forrest developed his own tactics.
Revered by Confederates and feared by the Union, Forrest is later accused of war crimes at the Battle of Ft. Pillow (1864) in western Tennessee.

Thomas Worley excerpt came from Ken Burns' Civil War documentary.
On December 31, 1862, advancing forces under Union general William Rosecrans fought a pitched battle with Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee on the outskirts of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Both generals formed plans of attack, but Bragg struck first, pulverizing the Union right flank with two veteran divisions. False reports indicating a Union retreat kept Bragg in place on January 1, but January 2 dawned with Rosecrans stubbornly holding his ground. Bragg ordered Gen. John Breckinridge and his division to charge the Union left late in the afternoon. Breckinridge’s men crossed an open field and nearly achieved a breakthrough, but massed artillery broke up the assault at the climactic moment. Although the battle to that point had been a tactical draw, the arrival of Union reinforcements made Bragg’s position untenable. He retreated on January 3, granting the North a valuable strategic victory in the middle of an otherwise dismal winter.
Ryeberg Home Movie: Battle of Stones River, Murfreesboro
Union forces won a vital victory here on these fields—they gained control of the Mississippi River, divided the Confederacy across Tennessee and Georgia, and blockaded major ports. But victory cost over 23,000 lives. From December 31, 1862 through January 2, 1863, General Braxton Bragg’s 35,000 troops fought it out with the 42,000-strong Union force commanded by Major General William Rosecrans. Rosecrans claimed victory.
The tall granite monument, topped with a bronzed eagle, sits at the center of the National Cemetery and is dedicated to the officers and enlisted men of the United States Regular Army Regiments who died in battle.
In the field, a man plays frisbee with his dog. But there was a day when these canons fired into the cedars, and the Confederates were forced to retreat.

Stones River National Battlefield
The Battle of Stones River (Battle of Murfreesboro) was fought from December 31, 1862, to January 2, 1863, in Middle Tennessee, as the culmination of the Stones River Campaign in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. Of the major battles of the Civil War, Stones River had the highest percentage of casualties on both sides. Although the battle itself was inconclusive, the Union Army's repulse of two Confederate attacks and the subsequent Confederate withdrawal were a much-needed boost to Union morale after the defeat at the Battle of Fredericksburg, and it dashed Confederate aspirations for control of Middle Tennessee.
