Being a Conservationist in Mississippi: Diversity & Biodiversity | Mitchell Robinson | TEDxUM
Diversity is a necessary component for a healthy and functioning community, while biodiversity is the metric for productive ecosystems. These two terms are not mutually exclusive, but rather codependent and essential for addressing matters of culture and conservation on a planet whose landscapes and societies are evolving at an unprecedented pace.
Mitchell Robinson joined the staff of Strawberry Plains Audubon Center as the Conservation Education Manager in January of 2014. Mitch most recently served for five years as the Education Coordinator, Land Manager and Interim Director at Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve in Austin, Texas. Within these capacities, he helped develop and implement active land management plans for endangered species within the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve System, including Golden-cheeked Warblers and Black-capped Vireos. His expertise includes endangered, threatened and invasive species management; interagency and non-profit collaborations; research design; private lands consultation; and naturalist education. Mitch lives in Holly Springs with his two dogs and can usually be found at home reading to them or playing their favorite folk songs on the guitar when not exploring the grounds at Strawberry Plains.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

Cedar Oak Plantation - Absolute! - December 12
ABSOLUTE AUCTION!
1779+/- Acres offered in 16 Parcels!
The Cedar Oak Plantation transports its guests to an era gone by, with its heyday that hails back to the 1800s, when Holly Springs, Mississippi was a boom town of escalating cotton prices and a bustling iron foundry. Originally part of the historic green revival house known then as Galena, the Cedar Oak Plantation today holds a proud reputation of Bobwhite Quail hunting and field trials.
Having been host to both the Mississippi Shooting Dog Championship and the Prairie All-Age Trial, Cedar Oak Plantation is a stunning property with a carefully conserved quail habit. Spanning 1,779+/- acres, which will be offered in 16 tracts, the property was also home to CedarOak Kate, who won a Field Trial National Championship.
The property includes everything a wing shooter could want for a private hunting plantation, including a classic, seven-bedroom, 7.5-bathroom lodge, horse stalls and a dog wash.
The lodge itself features six upstairs bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom, and an area that overlooks the spacious living room below, which includes a wood burning fireplace and large windows. A spacious kitchen, utility room and office space accompany a master suite with a garden tub on the main floor. The lodge also features two 80-gallon water heaters and several HVAC units, along with decor that includes two chandeliers from the famous Peabody Hotel in Memphis, making this property an ideal location for your guests' comfort and convenience.
While the remaining parcels pair excellently with the lodge, each parcel also features plentiful indigenous deer and wild turkey, making this property a perfect choice for all types of hunting and recreational purposes.
The property's barn has four stalls and five loafing pens with turnouts, along with a tack room, feed room, 14 covered kennels and a hay loft that will hold 400 bales of hay. An additional cabin and a three-bedroom, two-bathroom caretaker's home sits on the property, along with a five-pen kennel, a pasture barn and a machinery shed. A two-bay carriage house with pull down doors also sits on the property.
Located on the 40-acre Parcel Four is a club house with a kitchen and large gathering area. Surrounded by pecan and walnut trees, the club house also features a barn with 22 horse stalls, corals and a shed, along with electric hookups for campers.
Parcel Seven, a 39-acre tract with frontage on Highway 4, also has an improved block white building, primarily used for storage.

That was a hummer! Hummingbird banding and monitoring up close
Want to feel a hummingbird's heartbeat? Every two weeks during the season (late April to late August), the Intermountain Bird Observatory invites the public to come watch as they net, band and gather data on the hummingbirds that frequent Jennifer Alban's eight feeders near Idaho City. Spectators can see one of the four species that migrate through the area and watch researchers at work. Maybe you could help release one — especially if you're a kid. Space is limited and must be reserved; watch for dates next spring, too:
