Barcelona City is a metropolis on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian peninsula. It is the capital par excellence of Catalonia, being so much as the autonomous region of the province of Barcelona City and the region of Barcelonès and the second city in population and economic weight of the Iberian Peninsula. The city hosts the headquarters of the major government institutions in Catalonia: the Government of Catalonia and the Parliament of Catalonia. Having been the capital of the County of Barcelona City, often receives the nickname of Barca.
Barcelona City has a small part of its municipal side of the Llobregat Collserola. It is part of Vallvidrera Plains, besides the enclave of Santa Cruz Olorda, between the Vallès Occidental and Baix Llobregat. The line of the coast of Barcelona City has changed over time to the point that in prehistoric times came where today there are Plaza Catalonia. Did you know: Las Ramblas is crowded with hordes of tourists and locals, around the clock, participating in the spectacle that is Barcelona.
Barcelona's most famous street is both a tourist magnet and a window into Catalan culture, with cultural centres, theatres and intriguing architecture. Set between narrow traffic lanes and flanked by plane trees, the middle of La Rambla is a broad pedestrian boulevard, crowded every day until the wee hours with a wide cross-section of society. A stroll here is pure sensory overload, with souvenir hawkers, buskers, pavement artists, mimes and living statues all part of the ever-changing street scene.
It takes its name from a seasonal stream (raml in Arabic) that once ran here. From the early Middle Ages on, it was better known as the Cagalell (Stream of Shit) and lay outside the city walls until the 14th century. Monastic buildings were then built and, subsequently, mansions of the well-to-do from the 16th to the early 19th centuries. Unofficially, La Rambla is divided into five sections, which explains why many know it as Las Ramblas.
The initial stretch from Plaça de Catalunya is La Rambla de Canaletes, named after a turn-of-the-20th-century drinking fountain, the water of which supposedly emerges from what were once known as the springs of Canaletes. It used to be said that a proper barcelonin was one who ‘drank the waters of Les Canaletes’. Nowadays people claim that anyone who drinks from the fountain will return to Barcelona, which is not such a bad prospect. This is the traditional meeting point for happy FC Barcelona fans when they win cups and competitions.
The second stretch, La Rambla dels Estudis (Carrer de la Canuda to Carrer de la Portaferrissa) is also called La Rambla dels Ocells (ocells means 'birds') because of its former bird market.
From Carrer de la Portaferrissa to Placa de la Boqueria, what is officially called La Rambla de Sant Josep (named after a now nonexistent monastery) is lined with flower stalls, which give it the alternative name La Rambla de les Flors.
La Rambla dels Caputxins, named after another former monastery, runs from Plaça de la Boqueria to Carrer dels Escudellers. The latter street is named after the potters’ guild, founded in the 13th century, the members of which lived and worked here.
The final stretch of La Rambla, La Rambla de Santa Mònica, widens out to approach the Mirador de Colom overlooking Port Vell. This section is named after the Convent de Santa Mònica, which once stood on the western flank of the street and has since been converted into the Centre d’Art Santa Mònica, a cultural centre that mostly exhibits modern multimedia installations.

Las Ramblas is often the first landmark that most tourists identify with the city. It is the central most boulevard which cuts through the heart of the city centre and is a vibrant and lively promenade filled with Barcelona action at its best (and sometimes the worst. More later on this subject).
Orientation - Las Ramblas
Las Ramblas is approximately 1.2 kilometres long with Port Vell (near the cruise port terminal) at the Southern most end and Plaça Catalunya at the northern most end.
If you have your back to Port Vell and you are looking up towards Catalunya along the Ramblas on your left hand side is the Raval area and on your right-hand side is the Barri Gòtic (or Gothic Quarter).
Las Ramblas can also be roughly divided into seedy and non-seedy areas. This distinction between seedy and non-seedy becomes a lot clearer during the night time when the Southern most end of the Ramblas becomes something of a red light district and is frequented by night women (prostitutes).
In this article when I mention the northern most end of the Ramblas I mean north of the Liceu theatre (which is a mid way point along Las Ramblas) and the southern most end as being south of the Liceu Theatre.

Barcelona, the capital of the province of Catalonia of Spain, is located at the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, not far from the French border. For clear reason, Barcelona is one of the most visited cities in Europe. Barcelona offers a large and varied entertainment program (besides the famous FC Barcelona). This include the famous La Rambla, the colorful market hall Mercat de la Boqueria, the incredibly diverse city center with its many streets and shops, the Cathedral, the many buildings and parks created by Antoni Gaudí, including the Sagrada Familia and the Parc Guell. A great view of the city can be enjoyed from Tibidabo, the cable car over the old harbor and the Castell Montjuïc. Enjoy the sightseeing tour along the many and beautiful sights.

With a population of 1.6 million within city limits, its urban area extends to numerous neighbouring municipalities within the Province of Barcelona and is home to around 4.8 million people, making it the sixth most populous urban area in the European Union after Paris, London, Madrid, the Ruhr area and Milan. It is one of the largest metropolises on the Mediterranean Sea, located on the coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, and bounded to the west by the Serra de Collserola mountain range, the tallest peak of which is 512 metres (1,680 feet) high.

BARCELONA 2019 - This is our video from our trip to Barcelona in the summer of 2019. We visited the Ramblas, the Arc de Triomf, the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc and the great Olympic Stadium. Off course we were not able to visit all of the tourist attractions during our short stay. We hope to visit the city again in a few years to hop by Camp Nou, Park Güell and the Sagrada Família.

Districts of Barcelona :
Ciutat Vella
(the Old City), is indeed the oldest part of the city and is numbered as District Number One. It is located in a central position on the Mediterranean coast and is the top tourist magnet of the city. Top attractions in Ciutat Vella include the Medieval architecture of the Barri Gotic neighbourhood, the Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona in Raval and the Naval Museum at the end of the entertainment-filled walking path known as Las Rambles.
Eixample
is known as the Modernist Quarter for its imposing Modernistic buildings such as the Casa Mila, the Temple Expiatori and the local district hall. The district's street-grid is extremely strict, being divided into square blocks with widened streets at every intersection to allow for greater visibility.
Gràcia
is located in north-central Barcelona just north of Eixample. It was originally a separate city, which was founded in 1626 as the Our Lady of Grace Convent. It joined Barcelona only in the 20th Century and maintains an ambience of its own
Sants-Montjuïc
is located along the Mediterranean on the southern edge of Barcelona. It was formerly a separate municipality centred in Sants, but also includes the port and industrial complex called the Zona Franca and a wealth of museums and monuments. There are also frequent fairs and festivals in this part of Barcelona.
Sant Martí
on the east edge of town, is named after the first church built in the area- St. Martin's.

Founded as a Roman city, in the Middle Ages Barcelona became the capital of the County of Barcelona. After merging with the Kingdom of Aragon, Barcelona continued to be an important city in the Crown of Aragon as an economic and administrative center of this Crown and the capital of the Principality of Catalonia. Barcelona has a rich cultural heritage and is today an important cultural center and a major tourist destination. Particularly renowned are the architectural works of Antoni Gaudi, which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean are located in Barcelona. The city is known for hosting the 1992 Summer Olympics as well as world-class conferences and expositions and also many international sport tournaments.
Barcelona is one of the world's leading tourist, economic, trade fair and cultural centers, and its influence in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. Port Vell commences at the end of Barcelona's La Rambla, by the Columbus monument. If you head for the waterfront you will be able to see the historic schooner, the Pailebot Santa Eulalia, which was built in 1918 and named after Barcelona's co-patron saint. The wooden walkway, known as the Rambla de Mar, leads to the retail and leisure complex Maremagnum and Barcelona's L'Aquàrium
Port Vell is a waterfront harbor in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, and part of the Port of Barcelona. It is now a focal point of the city and tourist attraction, containing the Maremàgnum (a mall containing shops, a multiplex cinema, bars and restaurants), IMAX Port Vell and Europe's largest aquarium containing 8000 Fish and 11 sharks contained in 22 basins filled with 6 million litres (1.5 million gallons) of sea water. A pedestrian walkway, Rambla de Mar, connects La Rambla to Port Vell. It incorporates a swing bridge, in order to allow ships to enter and exit the harbour.
Ancient history
In the 1st century AD, the Romans founded a colony, Barcino, on Mount Tàber. The first port activity on the northern side of Montjuïc.
Middle ages and modern age
This strategic location was decisive in Barcelona's growth, for the city became established as a trading point between the two worlds and, eventually, the greatest maritime power in the Mediterranean.
These storms made it extremely difficult to build an artificial harbour, because the huge amounts of sand and sediment deposited as a result of these phenomena damaged any work, whether ongoing or complete.
Work on the first successful project began in 1477. The enterprise entailed building a dock that would stretch as far as Maians Island, a sandy islet about 100 metres off the coast.
As the dike that sheltered the harbor was extended in various stages to the south and southwest of Maians Island, sand was also deposited in large quantities on the beach to the southeast of the Ciutadella. The Barceloneta neighborhood was built on this new peninsula.
The Port continued to grow, stretching past Mount Montjuïc towards the Llobregat Delta with the construction of an inner harbour on the river bank, precisely where Barcelona's first port activity had its origins.
