Done Bali - Documentary
'Done Bali' - Documentary, 60 min
Prime Ministers, presidents, pop stars and poets have all done Bali. Kerry Negara took her film crew to Bali in 1992, and in a ground breaking documentary interviewed for the first time, local Balinese about the traumatic history of their so called paradise island.
She did not find Nehru's, morning of the world, but rather an anxious society juggling the complexities of having one foot in the ancient world and one foot in the modern, in a constant struggle for day to day survival.
'Done Bali' unravels the spin and exposes the vested interests that created the myth of Bali as a paradise during the most traumatic century the Balinese had endured the 20th century.
Australian historian Dr Adrian Vickers with Balinese academics Degung Santikarma, I.B. Palguna and Putu Suasta, trace the political manipulations of the early 20th century where bizarrely, in the colonial European imagination, Bali went from being a savage island to a paradise island almost overnight.
The elderly I.B. Rupa gives first hand reports of of the suffering endured by himself and his family in Bali during these same 'paradise years' - the harsh Japanese invasion of the second world war that saw food supplies diminish, volcanic eruptions and natural disasters on a grand scale, poverty and social unrest in the 1960's, the bloody communist purge of the 1960's where an estimated 80,000 Balinese were murdered...
In Ubud, the so called cultural heart of Bali, Kerry finds the disempowered aristocracy busily reinventing itself to take advantage of the financial boon of cultural tourism, while in the beach areas of Kuta, Legian and Seminyak a highly competitive group of expat manufacturers are partying and playing hard, creating havoc in their corner of paradise.
Meanwhile the tourists are in a daze with the golden flowers, the incense and the amazing surf. Through their eyes its all a happy paradise, where every child is a dancer and every farmer an artist.
In an era of mass tourism many vested interests rigidly protect this highly lucrative, saleable image of a cultural paradise - at the expense of truth.
While paying tribute to a resilient island people and a stunning tropical environment 'Done Bali' will forever change the way you see this paradise island.
When Done Bali first premiered on SBS Television it was screened three times in one month due to audience demand and record breaking ratings - such was the shock of the truth to Australians who knew so little of the island they had visited so often.
Done Bali continues to screen internationally and is on curriculum lists around the world.

Hinduism in Bali - Temples and Dances
After nearly 2000 years since Hindus first arrived, Bali is now the last Hindu stronghold of Indonesia. Hindu temples and Hindu practice are different in Bali and India. This video looks at how the Balinese temples are organised and also the main theological difference of Indonesia Hinduism.
The second half of the video is concerned with the Sendratari Ramayana and shows it performed with Kechak at sunset at the Uluwatu temple in Southern Bali. The ballet depicts the ancient Indian epic of Lord Rama who, with heroic Hanuman the monkey, wages war on the Rakshasas of Lanka in order to rescue Sita. It is a very Indo-European myth, and I loved seeing it depicted in dance!

Changing Plans! 48 Hours in Bali
Travel is all about being flexible and doing what feels right. We cut our trip in Labuan Bajo short once we realized that we'd need a lot more time on Flores Island to make it worth it. We headed back to Bali for an extra two days!
I mention Thomas Heaton, one of my favorite Youtubers and source for landscape photography inspiration:

Upacara Pelebon, puri ubud 2018
Ada suatu buku yang berjudul ”108 Mutiara Veda” Terbitan tahun 2001, cocoknya di halaman 107, ada tersurat yang dikutip dari: Yajurveda: 40-15. Dalam bukit itu disebutkan bahwa;
Pelaksanaan ritual upacara ngaben
Berikut Tipe – tipe Ngaben Sederhana :
Mendhem Sawa
Mendhem sawa berarti penguburan mayat.

5 Unique Cultures That Only Exist In Bali
5 Unique Cultures That Only Exist In Bali
Good day folks, so here we will share some information about 5 Unique cultures that only exist in Bali. Before we begin don’t forget to subcribe, like and share this video with your friends, if you have any suggestion feel free to comment down below. So what are you waiting for? let’s begin,,,,
1. Upacara Ngaben (Ngaben Ceremony)
This ceremony is part of hinduism that widely spread in Bali. This tradition is aim to purify the death person (literally both its body and soul) . This Ngaben ceremony is a cremation of a death person’s body which is put in some space. After it becomes ashes the family member will spread the ashes in the river or ocean as they believed it will release the soul of the person with any human related problem so that it can freely return to its owner, the god.
There are 5 types of Ngaben ceremony; Ngaben Sawa Wedana, ngaben asti wedana, swasta, ngelungah, and/or warak krunon. The Ngaben Sawa Wedana is for a person who still has a complete body, if the body was burried before being cremate it is called Ngaben Asti Wedana, if the body is not found the ceremony is called swasta. As for ngelungah and/or warak krunon ceremony, it is a cremation ceremony for kids and babies who died young.
2. Gebug Ende Seraya
How many of you love being hit by rattan? We guess nobody want it tho..... However this tradition from Bali is the opposite. People who participate in this tradition have to hit by rattan and hit other people by rattan. Well....we surely do not like the “being hit” part but we probably love the “to hit others” part of this tradition.
This tradition is usually held in summer in Seraya village, the local people believe that by doing this tradition the god will give a rain in summer and will bring a new life to their village, especially to the drought subsoil.
3. Ritual Pengerebongan (Pengerobongan Ritual)
This tradition is usually held every Sunday Pon in wuku medangsia according to Bali’s calender. this tradition aims to maintain the harmonisation of relationship between people and god, other people, and nature. The visitor can also watch this tradition if they want to dress up in Balinese traditional clothes and woman who has their period are not permitted to watch or join this tradition.
This tradition is opened by traditional music, flowers offering, along with penjo-penjor and continued by the people who participate in this ritual whoare praying in tempel (Pura). Later the police will guard the Mangki and Bhatara out of the templewhen the praying session is done, after that they will encircle Wantilan.
Some Mangku and Bathara are sometimes possessed by ghost when doing this ritual, some of them are crying, screaming, dancing, and even hurting theirselved with knives but weirdly there is no wound or any trace that their flesh has been cut before.
4. Trunyan Tradition
Trunyan village in Bali has a very unique tradition which is called Mapah, this is a funeral tradition where the body of death people are lied in the ground and it only encircle with a bamboo gate so the body can be seen by everyone who pass this funeral area.
Even thought the body is lied without any special treatment, the body do not have any stinky smell. The local believe that this happen because the Taru Menyan tree which is located in the funeral area has absorb the smell of the death body.
5. Mekotek Tradition
this tradition can not be separated from hinduism, it has been passed from generation through generation in Bali, this ritual is usually held in Hari Raya Kuningan in Munggu village. this tradition is held to avoid any badluck, netralizing negative aura and united the people.
Mekotek is held by encirclying munggu village and each partisipant mush bring a stick made from bamboo, after that the sticks are arranged in pyramid shape, later some one will going up to the top of the pyramidand later the other people will hold the pyramid so that it keeps in shape.

READ THIS: Like last year, I’d like to take the Sync the Planet Ride as an opportunity to create awareness beyond Bali and Indonesian borders. I had a few topics to choose from but I settled for something which bothers me for a long long time. Even though it's one of those videos outside my comfort zone which I really hate to make, for various reasons.
TRASH yes TRASH. Bali is a small holiday island in Indonesia, yet Bali is not only overrun by tourists but by garbage as well, in recent times it becomes more and more obvious, with literally no place/road where you can’t see the plastic and other waste. It’s a shame really, Bali is such a beautiful and spiritually island but the waste problem is getting out of hand. ( Even far far outside of tourist places ) Besides the increasing complains from both visitors and locals, don't forget the obvious health risk which comes with it!
It is also in contrary to the Balinese concept of TRI HITA KARANA the traditional philosophy of life on the island of Bali!!!
This all might be due to the fact that there is no money to make for the ones in ‘charge’, or not enough 'quick money' for that matter to find a satisfactory solution.
Bali does not have real recycling programs or waste management, other than dumping the waste on landfills, might that be official or illegal dumps ( yes, I do know small private organizations who do recycle ). Everything else gets thrown or burned on the road side. Littering is just too common and no one seems to care…I acknowledge that this is also to a very large percentage a educational problem, yet there are a few organizations and government programs trying to fight the problem, a few I’ll name below including other informative links:
However, all that will do nothing if we don’t change our own behavior. Everyone here knows that buying food or shopping at the markets for example comes with a huge amount of plastic bags for every item, not only that but everything gets packed twice or more... The waste then is just dumped at the most convenient place… the streets!
YES we are all part of the problem!
Please note that I’m not trying to bash Bali ( Hi Australian Media ;) ) but I want things to get changed, ask any surfer coming over here how it feels like to ride those trash waves, or visiting Bali's mother temple surrounded by trash????!
Let’s make a difference, start with yourself today and educate the ones around you for a better future!
Declaimer: PLEASE be aware that I purposely did not go into every fine detail, I just wish things would change as the little programs in place obviously aren’t working….
Much Love, SJ
