Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, Osaka City
Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is located in the southern downtown area of Osaka City. This Shrine like other Tenmangu Shrines is dedicated to the Shinto god of learning Sugawara no Michizane. Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is well known host of the Tenjin Matsuri Festival, one of the largest festivals in Japan.
Osaka Tenmangu Shrine | Japan 2016 | Episode 20
Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is the place to go to bolster your education prospects as it’s dedicated to the Shinto deity of scholarship. Parents and students alike visit the shrine to pray for good fortunes in education. We were a little surprised at how much there was to see at this shrine complex, the main halls, the smaller shrines all around the perimeter and a hallway of dioramas detailing the life of Sugawara Michizane known now as the deity of scholarship.
There was also food to be had! We enjoyed 2 dishes famous in Osaka, okonomiyaki and takoyaki. Nicole is not a fan of either, but I was really looking forward to eating these dishes. But having said that, the takoyaki place we found converted Nicole, she is now a fan. Still have to work on the okonomiyaki though.
We also visited a shopping area to see the Kansai flagship location of Uniqlo. The building is impressively decorated in glowing panels of light. We also strolled down one of the more ritzy shopping streets where all the high end brands can be found.
We ended the night in Dotonbori again. It’s such a draw, and a fun little corner of Japan.

KITANO TENMANGU, KYOTO, JAPAN
The Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is a shrine built in the northwest section of Kyoto over 1000 years ago. The shrine was built during 947AD by the emperor of the time in honor of Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and politician. To this day, many students that pray for passing scores on examinations and persons who wish for the improvement of their abilities come here to visit.

Smart Monkey Ko-ume Performing at the Yushima Tenjin Shrine in Tokyo!
A few days ago while in Tokyo, I visited the Yushima Tenjin Shrine (湯島天満宮). This shrine is not so far from Ueno park and a favourite of students who come to pray for good luck with their examinations. It was also plum blossom season and the Yushima Tenjin Shrine is famous for its ume matsuri. While there, a lady was performing with a monkey, called Koume or Little Plum (小梅). I have been to many shinto shrines, but never seen anything like this. She also mentioned that during the Sakura season the name of the monkey changes too,Ha!
Perhaps it has to do with Sugawara no Michizane (菅原道真, August 1, 845 -- March 26, 903), he was a scholar, poet, and politician of the Heian Period of Japan. He is regarded as an excellent poet, particularly in Chinese poetry, and is today revered as the god of learning, Tenman-Tenjin (天満天神). Being that the monkey is so smart it can do all these tricks, just like Michizane, who was a brilliant man. I don't know, you be the judge of that. Enjoy the show!
Plum Blossom Festival - Ume Matsuri Yushima Tenjin Shrine
Ume Matsuri is Plum Blossom Festival in Japan and from early February to early March, Japanese celebrate these harbingers of Spring. Before the madness of Sakura (cherry blossom) and hanami (cherry blossom viewing party) it was the Plum Blossom that the Japanese adored, a tradition coming from China.
From the Nara Period (710-794) to the first half of the Heian Period (794-1185) the Plum Blossom reigned until it gave way to the Cherry Blossom. But even today many places have plum blossom festivals most notably shrines related to the God of Education, Tenjin. In life, Tenjin was Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and statesman. As a scholar of Chinese, Sugawara loved the plum blossom.
Sugawara suffered political misfortune and was promoted-exiled to Kyushu where he died in 903. Some believed his ghost haunted the land and eventually to placate his angry spirit he was promoted in rank and later deified as the god of education.
Yushima Tenjin Shrine (also called Yushima Tenmangu) in Ueno, Tokyo has plum blossoms to view from February through March along with various entertainment on the weekend from tea ceremonies, folk dance, taiko drumming, biwa playing, and bringing a mikoshi (portable shrine) to the main shrine.
Fukuoka Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine ☆ 福岡水鏡天満宮 ☆ Japan As It Truly Is
The Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine is the old amongst the new...like many old countries, you'll find a lot of preserved historical places squeezed in by modern buildings and society - and one of the best examples of this is the Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine, between Tenjin and Nakasu on Meiji-Dori in Fukuoka City. Suikyo Shrine is a small, quiet oasis and a perfect place to escape the big city stress without leaving the city at all. It is a Tenmangu Shrine, so it's dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane (845–903 AD), and the main shrine is not too far either in Dazaifu and worth seeing if you can.
According to the legend of the shrine, on his way to take up his post in Dazaifu, Sugawara stopped and noticed his reflection in a small stream. Hence the name, meaning The Water Mirror Shrine. The original names of the shrine were Suikyo Tenjin or Sugatami Tenjin which mean full length mirror. The lord of the area, Kuroda Nagamasa moved the shrine's location to its present place in 1612, and Tenjin, which is the busy downtown of Fukuoka City, was named after the shrine which you see here.

Japan Trip 2018 - Day 6 - Kinkakuji Temple, Tenmangu Shrine, Nijo Castle and Arashiyama Forest
Today we headed to Kyoto and met up with our tour guide Kitty.
Our first stop of the day was Kinkakuji Temple, a Zen temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Formally known as Rokuonji, the temple was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. (I remembered the Shogun's name as there is also another famous Yoshimitsu that westerners might know - the Japanese warrior named Yoshimitsu in the Tekken video game series). It is also knows as the Golden Pavillion for obvious reasons.
Our next stop was Kitano Tenmangu Shrine (Not to be confused with Tenmangu Shrine in Osaka). The shrine was first built in 947 to appease the angry spirit of bureaucrat, scholar and poet Sugawara no Michizane, who had been exiled as a result of political maneuvers of his enemies in the Fujiwara clan. The grounds are filled with Michizane's favorite tree, the red and white ume or plum blossom. The shrine is popular with students praying for success in exams because the deity was in his life a man of literature and knowledge. Naturally we decided to also pray as well!
Our third stop of the day was Nijo-jo or Nijo Castle. It was built as the Kyoto residence of the Tokugawa shōguns.
The last stop of the day was Arashiyama Bamboo Grove or Bamboo Forest. Plenty of local girls headed there dressed in traditional Kimonos for a myriad of photos and selfies. The forest consists of several pathways for tourists and visitors.
After unbelievably setting another step record it was time to finally get some food and have a rest.

吉祥院天満宮 京都 / Kissho-in Tenmangu Shrine Kyoto

Sugawara no Michizane
Sugawara no Michizane was born August 1, 845 c.e. into a prominent Japanese family. After schooling, he moved up quickly in rank in the court achieving a prestigious postion in the Ministry of Popular affairs in just four years. He was also quickly promoted with a Doctorate of Literature, a high fete for a scholar while simultaneously taking on the administative duties at the school his father had founded. In 886 c.e. he was appointed as governer of Sankuri Province. At the time it was a necessary step for those who lacked clout to serve in remote areas as a prerequisite for further career advancement. During the time he served as governor, he wrote a good portion of his poetry. Also during the time he served as govenor a political conflict devoloped between the Emperer and a rival. Sugarwara no Michizane sided with the Emperer which proved an ill fated move for him after the Empror's death. Michizane (Suagawara is the family name) was exiled. It was.during his exile he wrote the.poem I read.
Michizane died in 903 c.e. after being exiled in 901.
A period of adverse weather after his death promted the imperial court to posthumously restore his title and dedicate shrines to him fearing the angry spirit of Sugawara no Michizane was causing the discord.
