Agneeswarar Temple Kanjanoor – Navagraha Sukra Sthalam Tamil Nadu
Agneeswarar Temple at Kanjanoor or Agniswara Swami Temple at Kanjanur is one of the nine Navagraha Temples in Tamil Nadu and is associated with Lord Sukran (Planet Venus), the sixth of Navagraha planets. Also known as Sukran Navagraha Sthalam, Agniswarar temple is located around 18 km from Kumbakonam and 2 km to the east from Sooriyanayanar Kovil, on the Kallanai - Poompuhar road, in Tamilnadu.
Similar to most of the other Navagraha Temples in Tamilnadu, the presiding deities of Agniswara Swami Temple is Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. Lord Shiva is worshiped here as Agneeswarar, as it is said that Lord Agni (Fire God) have worshipped Lord Shiva here. Goddess Parvati is worshipped here as Karpagambal.
It is said that Lord Brahma was blessed with a vision of Shiva's marriage with Parvathi here. The Braham Linga enshrined in the Agniswarar Temple is said to have worshipped by Lord Brahma. Another important feature is that the Oil Abishekam performed to the main Siva linga is fully absorbed by the idol. There is no separate sannidhi for Lord Sukra as Lord Shiva himself is believed to have incarnated as Venus here.
The Temple and its History
Located on the northern banks of river Cauveri, Kanjanoor Agneeswarar Temple or Kanjanur Agniswara Swami Temple is built with two prakarams. A five tiered Rajagopuram is seen at its entrance. Other deities worshipped here are Maanakkanjaarar, Nayanmaar and Kalikkaamar. Images that describe the legends relating to Haradatta Sivacharyar of Vaishnava origins, inscriptions from the Chola and Vijayanagar periods, and stone images of Natarajar and Sivakami are seen in this temple.
The Nataraja Sabha is referred to as the Mukti Mandapam and the Shiva Tandavam here is called as Mukti Tandavam. Legend says that Lord Shiva blessed Paraasara muni (Parasara Muni is the father of Vyasadeva and the author of Vishnu Puranam) with a vision of the cosmic dance - Mukti tandavam here.
This shrine is also referred to as Palaasavanam, Bhrammapuri, Agnistalam and Neelakudi.
One of the important features of the temple is that the Vilva leaf (Bilwa Leaf) seen here is 5 in number, which is quite unique.
Worship to Lord Sukran
Six worship services are offered daily. Fridays are considered auspicious to pray Lord Sukra. Sukran, the next most beneficial planet after Guru (Brihaspati), bestows his devotees with wealth and prosperity. If in a person's horoscope, Sukra is well placed, then the person enjoys better life and wealth. Lord Sukran is offered with white Lotus, white cloth, diamond, 'mochai' powder and athi to remove any obstacles in life and work caused by a misplaced Sukra (Sukira Dhosham) in a person’s horoscope.
Temple Festivals
A festival to honor Haradatta Sivacharyar is celebrated in the Tamil month of Thai every year. Besides, Mahasivaratri, Aadi Pooram, Navaratri, and Arudra Darisanam are also celebrated with much importance.

Welcome to the Kanjanur Shiva temple!
Lord Shiva and Parvathi at Kanjanur are worshipped as Lord Agneeswara and Karpaga Valli Amman. This vortex is the sixth significant temple among the Navgrahas. Lord Shukra - Venus rules your luck factor, prosperity, abundance, riches and assets. It is a belief that Lord Shiva himself incarnated as Venus at Kanjanur. A special feature of the lingam here is that it absorbs all the oil poured over it during the abhishekam. Also, Shakthi is seen towards right side of Shiva. In most temples, it is the vice-versa.
The temple has two sanctums with a five-tier temple tower in the entrance. River Kaveri flows from the south to north at Kanjanur and faces the temple tower. This is why, the temple tower here faces the south direction, as well. The temple and the river Kaveri face each other. This is a highlight at Kanjanur.
There is a separate shrine in this temple where lord Venus waits for his devotees to perform rituals to him and to fix their birth charts for a weekly placed Venus. He is the son of sage Bruhu and so called upon as Bhargavan, the name by itself means that he is open to the requests of his devotees. He is the yogakaraka or the fortune giver. The good effects showered to you from the other planets in the navgraha is intensified by the one and only fortune giver Venus.
There is also the Nataraja Sabha which is called the mukthi mandapam, where the dancing lord bestowed the vision of his cosmic dance to the rishi. The statue of Lord Nataraja is carved in stone, this is a very unique site.
There is also another legend that Haradattasivachariya, a Vedic seer, who is into publishing daiva sidhantha, a Vedic religious philosophy attained his divine powers at this vortex. It is said that Lord Maha Vishnu incarnated his Haradatta in a vaishnavait family, grew old, and supported the Vedic heritance of the shivaites. These divine place were inacted to bring about equality among the mankind. To mark the importance of Haradattasivacharya, he blesses the people of this temple in the form of five-year old boy with Dhakshinamurthy in his sanctum. There are many legends and famous celestial events that have taken place in the Ganesha sanctum at this temple. It is said that there was an old lady called Karpagam Nachiar who practiced the habit of offering modhagam, a sweet snack to Lord Ganesha at this temple. Appeased by her fervent devotion, Lord Ganesha is said to have accepted her offerings and also lifted her to Kailash with his trunk to visit Shiva and Parvati.
Usually, Lord Shukra at Kanjanur is offered with white lotus, white clothes and diamonds to appease him. He is the son of sage Bruhu and is called Bhargavan. Shanti Homas and poojas are the part of day to day celebrations at Kanjanur temple. Maasi Magam,a festival related to Haradattasivacharya is celebrated with pomp and gaiety at this power vortex during the Tamil month of Thai, which marks in between January and February. The first Friday of every month is considered very auspicious and holy and is dedicated to Lord Shukra with divine chants and hymns.
Kanjanur temple is located about 20 kms from Mayiladudurai in Southern India. Visit this temple once in your life time to get trenched with material showers.

As they had been the ardent devotees of Lord Vishnu,

Srirangam Temple - Sri Ranganatha Swamy - Tiruchirappalli, Tamilnadu - Documentary
Srirangam is the foremost of the eight self-manifested shrines (Swayam Vyakta Kshetras) of Lord Vishnu . It is also considered the first, foremost and the most important of the 108 main Vishnu temples (Divyadesams). This temple is also known as Thiruvaranga Tirupati, Periyakoil, Bhoologa Vaikundam, Bhogamandabam. In the Vaishnava parlance the term “KOIL” signifies this temple only. The temple is enormous in size. The temple complex is 156 acres in extent. It has seven prakaras or enclosures. These enclosures are formed by thick and huge rampart walls which run round the sanctum. There are 21 magnificent towers in all prakaras providing a unique sight to any visitor. this temple lies on an islet formed by the twin rivers Cauvery and Coleroon.
The temple of Sri Ranganathaswami at Srirangam boasts an historic past of great kingdom and a civilization thousands of years old. The reign of the Pallavas was marked by the creation of a solid religious foundation, for example the encouragement given by the dynasty appears to have contributed to the growth of Aryan institutions in Southern India more particularly in the Carnatic. Cholas reigned for about three hundred years over the Coromandel Coast and the greater part of Eastern Deccan, where they helped an advanced Hindu Culture to flourish.
The cholas were defeated in the thirteen century by the Pandyas of Madurai and Hoysalas of Mysore. Hoysalas had taken particular interest in the building of the Temple of Srirangam, leaving behind both the inscriptions and buildings. The Hoysalas were then driven away by the Pandyas in the early part of fourteenth Century. Later, the Mohammedans began frequently raiding the Deccan facing strong resistance from the Hindu Kingdom, which was established in Vijayanagar in 1336. The Kingdom maintained its independence until 1565.
During this time, the Europeans had appeared in the south of India. In the sixteenth century a number of foreign travelers and traders passed through but taking least interest in the hinterland except for the routes it provided for their trade with the Kingdom of Vijayanagar. In 1600, the English East India Company was formed, and 1664 the French company.
In 1680, King Aurangazeb (1658-1707), launched a campaign in western Deccan. After long sieges and a great loss of life, the fortress cities of Bijapur and Golconda fell to him, and the campaign lasted until his death.
In Europe, however, the war of Austrian succession set the English and the French at each other’s throats. Duplex captured Madras (1746), which was given back to the English two years later. The French were forced to surrender in 1752 and Duplex was disavowed and recalled in 1754.
In 1760, a further French attempt, led by Lally-Tollendal, was unsuccessful and the French trading post was dismantled in 1763. From then on, the English Company gradually annexed the whole of the territory of India. Though the French came near to victory, later on they were defeated in 1798 by the English led by Wellessley and who invaded Mysore and in 1799 captured the fortress of Srirangapatnam. There after all of the Southern India came under the supremacy of England. The Carnatic was included in the direct administration of the Madras Presidency where it remained.
