This mosque was the first mosque in the town of Rhodes, built soon after Ottomans besieged it and captured it in 1522. In 1808 the current building of mosque was built through the reconstruction of this first mosque.[3] Its plaster is rose-pink. The most of the mosque was reconstructed using materials of the buildings which existed at the same place in the earlier period. The pillars of the outer arcade belonged to the Christian church.[
Europa Nostra gave this mosque an honorary distinction in 2006 2]

Old Town of Rhodes, Greece (Full HD)
The Order of St John of Jerusalem occupied Rhodes from 1309 to 1523 and set about transforming the city into a stronghold. It subsequently came under Turkish and Italian rule. With the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Great Hospital and the Street of the Knights, the Upper Town is one of the most beautiful urban ensembles of the Gothic period. In the Lower Town, Gothic architecture coexists with mosques, public baths and other buildings dating from the Ottoman period.

Called here on a day trip to Rhodes old town. Was attracted by the rooftop covered seating, which offered a pleasant shaded break from the streets.
Staff were very polite and helpful. Specials menu or a la carts. Food was good portions, fresh and made to order. We had sardines and Greek salad.
Very pleased with our visit. One of many good restaurants in the area.
My partner and I had dinner here. The food was superb, the service was very good and the view from the balcony of the old town is one of the best we found. I highly recommend it and we will definitely go back.

Island of RHODES: EXPLORING a historic, neglected MUSLIM CEMETERY (GREECE) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to the beautiful Greek island of Rhodes and let's visit the historic (plus, abandoned and neglected) Murad Reis Mosque and the adjacent cemetery.
The mosque was built in 1524 just after the Ottoman conquest of Rhodes and is named after Murat Reis (or Murad there’s no definitive spelling) who was an Ottoman naval commander. Born in Rhodes to Albanian parents he is buried in the cemetery. His tomb is still there and for many years Ottoman sailors would visit for good luck on their voyages.
There’s a decayed elegance to the graveyard, next to the mosque, with its unique Turkish gravestones. The ones that have turbans are male and the more pineapple shaped ones are women. They are ornately carved and look long neglected.
If you’ve got an hour to spare and are looking for a place to get away from the tourists, take a wander around under the eucalyptus trees and enjoy this very historical place.
Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins and remnants of its occupation by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. The city of Rhodes has an Old Town featuring the medieval Street of the Knights and the castlelike Palace of the Grand Masters. Captured by the Ottomans and then held by the Italians, the palace is now a history museum.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Rhodes, Old City - Greece Travel Channel
The old town of Rhodes with its nested and narrow lanes reflects the turbulent history of the city and the island.
The city was founded after the victory of the Delian League over the Persians in 408 BC. After the Delian League was dissolved, Rhodes became independent. Later, Rhodes approached to the Romans, but fell in disgrace due to the support of the Macedonian king Perseus .
After the partition of the Roman Empire, Rhodes belonged to the Eastern Roman Empire and later to Byzantium. Changeable conquests by the Genoese and Venetians followed until Rhodes fell to the crusaders. 200 years later it was part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1912 Italy occupied Rhodes. After the end of World War II Rhodes became part of the Kingdom of Greece.
Many of these political phases are reflected in the architecture of this city, particulary in the Suleyman Pasha Muschee and the adjacent Turkish quarter. The Socrates street leads to Platia Ippokratu with the Owl Fountain and the adjacent square of the Jewish martyrs with the Seahorse Fountain. The oldest Islamic mosque in the city is the Ibrahim Pasha Mosque

Touring the Sites of Old Town Rhodes | Clock Tower | Colossal Statue Site | Street of the Knights
Before we sailed on this Royal Caribbean Greek cruise, the stop in Rhodes was the one we knew least about and didn't care much for. But now that it's over, Rhodes was our favorite stop and the one we wish there was more time to spend on land.
This video starts with docking in the Port of Rhodes. We walked from the ship to the walled city of Rhodes around 8am. The city was pretty quiet and most shops had not yet opened. But we walked the streets and got a chance to see most places crowd-less, which turned out to be a great idea since 3 hours later, those same locations were filled with tourists.
Our real first stop was Socratous Garden, an outdoor cafe in old town Rhodes which is worth a visit and a meal. The crepe was spot on and the coffee's were good.
Then we stopped by the Suleman Mosque and the Hafiz Ahmed Agha Library for some great pictures you can see on Instagram (@SierrasTravel)
Across the street from the Mosque is the Medieval Clock Tower Roloi, which is the tallest structure in Old Town Rhodes and one you can climb. So we bought a 5 Euro ticket and climbed to the top. They also offer a free drink from the bar as part of the 5 Euro ticket.
Then we walked the Street of the Knights toward the Palace of the Grand Masters. Our tour of the Palace of the Grand Masters will be in a separate video that will be linked here:
We walked back and out of old town through the Freedom Gate and headed north toward the Mandraki Port. A lot of shops and restaurants line the street Pl. Eleftherias, which is the steet we walked along. A great idea to spend some time if you are in Rhodes for an extended period.
As we walked, we saw the Rhodes Windmills, boats to Lindos and harbour cruises, the Fort of St. Nicholas, Hirschkuh Statue and the site where the Colossus of Rhodes once stood. So quite a lot in a short distance. All worthy of photos.
In the interest of your time, we end the video here at around 13 min and continue with Part 2 to cover the rest of Rhodes. The link to Part 2 is here -
