The earliest building that would claim our first attention will be the old Masjid (Mosque) of Ahmad Shah. It was presumably a private chapel for the royal household. Of the simplest design, it measures on the inside 47.55 meters by 16.46 meters and has 152 pillars, roofed by two rows of 10 larger domes with smaller ones between, and rises to a height of 8.53 meters, with flanking quasi buttresses. The hall is three-bay wide and has four other arched openings besides the central entrance, and has eight perforated stone windows. On the north-west corner is situated the ‘zanana’ enclosure with twenty-five richly wrought pillars on 9.45 meters square space and is entered from without, by a flight of steps and closed porch at the head of it, at the north-west end.
The central mihrab on the west wall is of beautiful white and black marble casing, opposite to which is a platform on which Sultan Ahmad was wont to sit for reciting his prayers. It was originally covered with a very ornate small canopy but this was dismantled and disposed of by a subsequent owner of the mosque in about AD 1870. There are four other mihrab recesses also of marble, of which one is situated within the zanana area. The pillars of the sanctuary which are of white and red sandstone have often an incongruity of pattern, two Hindu shafts having frequently been superimposed, and where the height was felt inadequate, a stone block having been inserted in between. This latter feature became a part of the ‘order’ in due course.
Behind the central entrance and on the higher wall above it, a carved screen is carried across overhead in front of the first dome —— an arrangement typical of Gujarat mosques and obviously intended to admit the higher central façade arch. The arches though truly pointed are badly constructed.
While thus the external design is obviously of the traditional form, the internal features incorporate the Hindu or Jain pillars and ring dome structure, with decided success.
The site of the mosque occupying an area of about 3344.51 square meters has a common basement plinth, and a compound wall which is entered by two doors, one at the center on the east and the other on the north side. The plinth carries a decorated string course of diamond pattern.
There is an Arabic inscription over the central mihrab which assigns the erection of the mosque on the 4th Shawwal AH 817 (7th December, AD 1414) to Ahmad Shah.

Shahi Jama Masjid or Jumma Mosque, is the most splendid mosque of Ahmedabad, built in 1424 during the reign of Ahmed Shah I. Lying in the old party of walled city, the mosque is situated within Bhadra Fort area, on the eastern side of Teen Darwaza.
The Jama Masjid of Ahmedabad was probably the largest mosque in the Indian subcontinent built in this period. Designed as part of a major plan desired by the Emperor Sultan Ahmed Shah, the mosque is located south of the processional axis that runs from the Maidan-i Shah at the door with three arches, Teen Darwaza.

Rani-ka-Hazira, also known as the Tomb of the Queens, lies near Jami Mosque in Ahmedabad. The enclosure where the tombs stand is high above the surrounding streets. The galleries are screened by beautifully wrought stone jails (perforated Stones). The Tomb of the Queens is covered by brilliantly colored pieces of brocade. The carvings on the tombs are also noteworthy.

Jama Masjid Ahmedabad is a Hindu temple which was converted to a Masjid by Muslim invader Ahmed Shah 1. Inside the structure, you can still find hundreds of Hindu temple pillars, Hindu carvings, motifs, pillars, remnants of Garbhagriha.
The historical truth is that Jama Masjid Ahmedabad is actually a Bhadrakali temple that was seized during the invasion by Sultan Ahmed Shah.

Near the eastern entrance to the Jami mosque in the Manek-Chowk is situated the magnificent rauda of Sultan Ahmad I who died in AH 846 (AD 1442). While Muhammad Shah II (AD 1442-51) was in power, the tomb of his father Ahmad Shah I (AD 1411-41) was completed. But, according to Professor Commissariat, it was in all probability erected by Ahmad Shah himself soon after the Jami Masjid. This mausoleum popularly called Badshah-ka-Hazira is a square structure with projecting porticos from the middle of each side, the entrance being provided through the one on the south. Enclosed verandahs or columned courts connect these central porches to the small domes while the central chamber has a large dome. The pillared cloisters were provided with pierced screen walls. Though it did not introduce any new architectural trend, the tomb, being the first of its kind in Ahmadabad, is noteworthy. In this grand mausoleum, rest in their eternal sleep, three early Sultans of Gujarat namely Ahmad Shah I (AD 1411-42), his son Muhammad Shah II (AD 1442-51) and grandson Qutbu’d-Din Ahmad Shah II (AD 1451-58) and according to some Ahmad Shah III (AD 1554-1561).
An inscription, over the door of the central hall, mentions that the mausoleum was repaired, about a century later, in AH 944 (AD 1538), under the technical supervision of Ahmad Chhajju, by an eminent nobleman Farhatu’l-Mulk who built the Shah Khub’s mosque.

Mosque of Sultan Ahmed shah
The mosque was erected by the founder of Ahmedabad, Ahmad Shah I in 1414. It said to have been used as the royal household's private mosque. According to the inscription at the upper part of the central mihrab, the foundation date seems to be the 4th day of Shawwal month in 817AH, which is 17 December 1414. The outer wall, almost bare of ornament, with ill designed pointed arches and squat minarets, mark the Hindu artisans' first attempts to build in Islamic style. It is likely that this was added later, in order to convert a Hindu temple into a mosque. The evidence for this can be seen inside, where five large and several smaller domes formed of converging stones and richly carved, are supported by rows of pillars, some of them still bearing Hindu figures and emblems. Pillared halls are a characteristic of Hindu temples, where they usually form the sabha griha, before one enters the garbha griha. The north porch leading into the latticed Princesses' Gallery is Hindu throughout and may be part of some temple on whose site the mosque was raised. The pavement is of white marble, the canopy covered pulpit has a yellow marble balustrade carved in a leafy pattern, and white marble steps. In the courtyard is a mound called Ganj Shahid or the martyrs' mound, the tomb of warriors who perished in Sultan Ahmed's early fights.
The mosque covers area of 700 square metres and have two rows of ten large domes surrounded by several smaller domes. The mosque is supported by 152 pillars and have four arched gateways. There are eight perforated stone windows and 25 fine carved pillars.
The mosque was restored in 2011 by Archaeological Survey of India at cost of Rs. 2.2 million.

During the Muzaffarid rule, Ahmedabad grew to become one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world, and the sultan's were patrons of a distinctive architecture that blended Islamic elements with Gujarat's indigenous Hindu and Jain architectural traditions. Gujarat's Islamic architecture presages many of the architectural elements later found in Mughal architecture, including ornate Mehrabs and minarets, jali (perforated screens carved in stone), and chattri's (pavilions topped with cupolas).

The 15th Century Jama Masjid Mosque, Ahmedabad, Gujarat
The Jama Masjid (Mosque) is located in the heart of old Ahmedabad and one of the most splendid mosques in India. Constructed in 1423 by Sultan Ahmed Shah, there are different entrances with one next to the tomb of the sultan.
Women are allowed to enter the Jama Masjid as long as they follow typical mosque etiquette: dress properly (arms covered, no shorts, take off shoes and be respectful. The unusual architecture is known as Ahmedabadi Architecture because of its mixture of Hindu, Jain and Islamic styles.
Jama Masjid is supported by 260 pillars and has 15 domes. Shah Ahmed Shah was extremely enlightened for the 15th century and had a special second floor section beyond latticed screens for women to pray in along with a separate entrance. Quite unlike today where women aren't allowed to enter for prayers.
