MediMoments 2009: Ephesus, Turkey carpet making store
After our visit to Ephesus, Ozcan had arranged for us to have a wonderful outdoor lunch (some had Lion's milk to drink!) and then an interesting Turkish carpet-making tour. The tour ended up in a nice air-conditioned carpet store, where we got a chance to feel different kinds of Turkish carpets. Daryl Ann was thinking about buying a carpet, but ended up buying one at the bazaar instead. From the carpet store, our bus took us to the Turkish Delight store, where we got to taste different types of teas and treats.

Carpet Weaving, Turkey
Weaving carpets seems like difficult work, but the finished products are lovely. This carpet factory was near Ephesus and Selcuk, a segment from What the Sultan Saw, highlighting the history of Turkey & Constantinople/Istanbul, featuring the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires.
This free Intrepid Berkeley Explorer video tour of western and central Turkey stars the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Cappadocia (land of scenic fairy chimneys), Ephesus (& other Roman cities), the Turkish Riviera, Turkish folk dancing and belly dancing, shopping for the magic flying carpet, and much more.

Flinging The Kilims and Rugs in Eastern Turkey
Once Urartu Carpets had finished demonstrating how rugs and carpets are woven and hand-knotted, the Explore group was shown into a huge room filled with stacks and heaps of wares. Showtime! It was time to fling the kilims and rugs.
Offered a choice of wine (very good wine, I might add), raki, tea, beer or soft drink, the fun began. One by one, extremely colorful kilims, carpets and rugs from all over Asia were unrolled and flung on the ground along with explanations while we oohed and aahed...

Turkey: Experience in a carpet factory [May, 2013]
We got a glimpse of traditional Turkish carpet-making from its very beginning pre-production when the silk threads are extracted from the silkworm cocoons to the near-completion of the carpet. We saw hard working young Turkish ladies weaving the carpets and had a very clear explanation of the different types and qualities of carpets. We were bombarded with different carpet terms; cotton, silk, wool-on-wool, cotton-on-wool and there was also the exciting unrolling and throwing of the carpets on the floor with a loud thud to show how solid these carpets are. We were even shown a carry-on case to take the smaller rugs home with us on the airplane.
