Kobe (神戸市 Kōbe-shi?) is the sixth-largest city in Japan and is the capital city of Hyōgo Prefecture on the southern side of the main island of Honshū, approximately 500 km (310.69 mi) west of Tokyo. Kobe is a prominent port city with a population of about 1.5 million. The city is located in the Kansai region of Japan and is part of the Keihanshin (京阪神 Keihanshin?) metropolitan area along with Osaka and Kyoto. Keihanshin in turn is part of the Taiheiyō Belt, a megalopolis.
Kobe was one of the cities to open for trade with the West following the end of the policy of seclusion and has since been known as a cosmopolitan port city. While the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake diminished much of Kobe's prominence as a port city, it remains Japan's fourth busiest container port.[6] Companies headquartered in Kobe include ASICS, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and Kobe Steel, as well as over 100 international corporations with Asia or Japan headquarters in the city such as Procter & Gamble, Boehringer-Ingelheim and Nestlé.[7][8] The city is the point of origin and namesake of Kobe beef as well as the site of one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts, Arima Onsen.

Mount Rokkō (六甲山 Rokkō-san?) is a name of a group of mountains in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. This mountain is one of Hyōgo 50 mountains, Kinki 100 mountains, and also one of the 300 famous mountains in Japan.
There is no single mountain or peak called Rokkō. The highest peak of the mountains is called Rokkō-Saikōhō (六甲最高峰?), literally, the highest peak in Rokkō Mountains. The mountains spread from Sumaura Kōen Park in the west end of Kobe, to Takarazuka, and the length of the mountains ranges is about 56 km. The highest point is 931m. It includes Mount Maya, Mount Kabutoyama, Mount Iwahara and Mount Iwakura.
Today, the Rokkō mountain area is a centerpiece of a popular sightseeing and hiking area for people in the metropolitan area in Kansai region. Mt. Rokkō is a symbol of Kobe as well as Osaka.

ROUTE DIRECTIONS:
Disclaimer: The directions only represent my personal experience. I accept no responsibility for any losses or injuries resulting from following these directions. Hike safe!
Get off at Oji-koen station, walk west along the wall of the park, past the zoo entrance, and turn right at the Museum of Literature. Walk straight ahead up the hill all the way to the end of the (increasingly narrow) road, then cross the bridge to your right, and you’ll reach the hike’s starting point. (Get directions to here: )
Go up the slope to the left, and the hiking trail begins. Walk up and up the concrete slope, cross a few bridges over the stream, and keep following the signs to 摩耶山頂. Warning: there are lots of steps..!
Near the top, at the last ruins, turn left and wrap around to the shrine on top of the mountain, then go straight ahead over the hill, down the slope, to the road. Turn right, and you’re at the top. Enjoy the view!
Coming down, head back down the road towards the path you arrived on, and go down the stairs to your left. Follow the path down, turn left at the junction (look for the 摩耶ケーブル下 signs), then follow the signs all the way down… It’s a little confusing at 2 intersections: at one, you have to turn right and go UP the stairs (even though it feels like the wrong way), and then a minute later, you have to go DOWN the stairs and cross the river (even though the path looks very small). Then climb the stairs when you reach a small dam, down the other side, and you’re done! (End hike point: ). It’s an easy 15 minute walk back to Oji-koen station.
Hyogo Daibutsu: One of the Three Great Buddhas of Japan!
Did you know Kobe has a big buddha statue? Nofukuji Temple in Kobe is home to Hyogo Daibutsu; one of the Three Great Buddhas in Japan. The Hyogo Daibutsu dates back to 1891 but during World War 2 it was melted to make weapons. Finally it was rebuilt in 1991, 100 years after the original daibutsu was created.
The temple and daibutsu are about a 10 minute walk from JR Hyogo Station.
It is free to enter the grounds.

Suma (須磨区 Suma-ku?) is one of 9 wards of Kobe City in Japan. As of February 1, 2012, it has an area of 30.0 km², and a population of 166,324, with 71,745 households.
There is a white sandy beach in this ward, which attracts tourists to the Kansai region for sun bathing and popular events during the summer season. The same beach has appeared in the classic epics Genji monogatari, Heike monogatari, and Ise monogatari. Thus Suma is often referred as an utamakura or meisho, referenced frequently in waka poetry, Noh theatre, kabuki and jōruri.
Kobe (神戸市 Kōbe-shi?, Japanese pronunciation: [koːꜜbe]), is the sixth-largest city in Japan and is the capital city of Hyōgo Prefecture on the southern side of the main island of Honshū, approximately 30 km (19 mi) west of Osaka on the north shore of Osaka Bay. With a population of about 1.5 million, the city is part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area along with Osaka and Kyoto.
The earliest written records regarding the region come from the Nihon Shoki, which describes the founding of the Ikuta Shrine by Empress Jingū in AD 201.[2][3] For most of its history the area was never a single political entity, even during the Tokugawa Period, when the port was controlled directly by the Tokugawa Shogunate. Kobe did not exist in its current form until its founding in 1889. Its name comes from kanbe (神戸?), an archaic title for supporters of the city's Ikuta Shrine.[4][5] Kobe became one of Japan's 17 designated cities in 1956.
Kobe was one of the cities to open for trade with the West following the 1853 end of the policy of seclusion and has since been known as a cosmopolitan port city. While the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake diminished much of Kobe's prominence as a port city, it remains Japan's fourth busiest container port.[6] Companies headquartered in Kobe include ASICS, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and Kobe Steel, as well as over 100 international corporations with Asia or Japan headquarters in the city such as Eli Lilly and Company, Procter & Gamble, Boehringer Ingelheim and Nestlé.[7][8] The city is the point of origin and namesake of Kobe beef as well as the site of one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts, Arima Onsen.
