Sümeg Castle was built in the mid or late 13th century by Béla IV of Hungary and is one of the nicest Hungarian castles that has remained unharmed. It is situated atop a mountain called Castle Hill, 20 miles north of Lake Balaton.

Castle of Sümeg is a castle by the town of Sümeg, Veszprém county, Hungary.
Built in the mid or late 13th century by Béla IV of Hungary, Sümeg Castle is situated atop a mountain called Castle Hill, 20 miles north of Lake Balaton. During its existence, it has been expanded several times. In the 15th century, it was fortified, and the second of two towers was built. It has been under siege several times, and has experienced two fires.
Today, it is the main tourist attraction for visitors to Sümeg.

Today we explore Sümeg, a town a little bit north of Lake Balaton. Although the town is noted most for its 13th-century castle, built on a limestone massif, there are some hidden secrets at the foot of the hill. Aside from an arena where re-enactments are played, there is a bishop palace and two churches. One of the churches apparently has a hidden room that showcases a fresco painted by Maulbertsch over 250 years ago. It still retains its colour!

A real drawbridge, Sümeg Castle, Sümeg, Hungary
This was the first time I saw a real drawbridge. It's an incredible design that actually functioned to serve a mechanical purpose, and it looks nothing like what I've seen in movies, picturebooks, etc. Seeing it really made me connect more to the history of castles, etc.
If you know the vocabulary of drawbridges, please respond! You'll see that there's a piece underneath the drawbridge that the chain, which passes through the drawbridge, is rotated against, the control of which is inside. You'll see the chain connect to the top of the front wall, which I believe gives it added stability (e.g. to keep the chain from tangling or to reduce slack). And to think that a person moved the wheel! Wow!

Sümeg vára a Balaton-felvidék nyugati részén, a környező tájegységből kiemelkedő magányos hegycsúcs tetején található. A háromosztatú erődítmény magja az 1260-as években épült öregtorony alsó szintje. A fellegvár falai egy évszázaddal később készültek el, majd a 15. század folyamán a vár előtti fennsíkot is erős, magas védőfallal vették körül.
IV. Béla király parancsára a veszprémi püspök erős kővárat emeltetett a sümegi hegyen. A 14. század elején a Dunántúl korlátlan hatalmú oligarchái, a Kőszegi család ragadta magához, uralmukat csak az 1318-as győztes hadjáratában döntötte meg Anjou Károly. 1440 nyarán a Luxemburgi Erzsébet királyné pártján álló nemesek ostrom alá vették az Ulászló király táborához tartozó püspökség sümegi várát, amit azonban sikeresen megvédelmezett az őrség. Rövidesen megépítették a külsővárat, így Sümeg a környék legerősebb kővárává fejlődött. Sümeg jelentőségét csak fokozta, hogy a veszprémi püspök is ide húzódott vissza székhelyéről, amit 1552-ben elfoglaltak a „pogány” hadak. 1553-ban emelték legkorszerűbb védőművét, a több emeletes, vastag falú Kövess-bástyát. 1605 tavaszán a Habsburg-ház zsarnoksága ellen felkelt Bocskai István erdélyi főnemes hajdúserege megszállta a várat, ahol meggyilkolták Újlaky Miklós veszprémi püspököt, majd a fejét legurították a hegyoldalon. Katonai szerepét a II. Rákóczi Ferenc irányította kuruc szabadságharcban is megtartotta, és 1705-től a felkelők fontos bázisának számított, falai között még lőport is gyártottak a harcoló katonaságnak. Hadiszerencséjük hanyatlásával 1709-ben ágyúlövés nélkül feladta a kuruc katonaság, épületeit négy esztendő múltán egy hadgyakorlat ürügyén felgyújtatta a császári parancsnokság.
A gazdátlanná vált védőműveket az időjárás vasfoga a lakossággal karöltve évszázadokon át rombolta, mígnem az 1960-as években megkezdődött régészeti feltárása és megóvása. A Balaton-felvidék legjobban helyreállított középkori kővárában minden nyáron színpompás várjátékokkal idézik fel az egykori vitézek életét.
A várat 2016-tól kezdődően a Nemzeti Várprogram keretében felújítják.
