Sicily communities offer burial spaces for victims of 3 October shipwreck
The mayors of several cities in Sicily have offered space in their cemeteries to bury those who died when a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Lampedusa on October 3.
The 18-metre-long (59-foot) boat sank after two days of sailing from Libya, when a fire set to draw the attention of potential rescuers sparked a panic on board, leading the vessel to capsize.
More than 300 people are confirmed dead, 155 survived and dozens are still missing.
One-hundred-and-fifty coffins were brought on Sunday to the city of Agrigento, where they now cover the floor of the cemetery's morgue.
Another 180 are expected to arrive on Tuesday.
Officials said that, of the 150 coffins, 78 will be buried in the Piano Gatta cemetery, two will be buried in a private chapel and the rest will be sent around the province.
Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta announced state funerals for the victims when he visited Lampedusa last Wednesday, but the mayor of Agrigento, Marco Zambuto, said no further information had been given.
Wary of health and safety concerns from the bodies, Zambuto said they have begun to bury the migrants.
The mayor attended the burial of the first migrant interred at Piano Gatta cemetery on Monday.
He paid his respects to the victims during an unofficial ceremony where he observed a moment of silence in front of the grave.
The arrival of the graves comes just days after another shipwreck involving migrants in the Mediterranean.
The vessel sank 65 miles south of the Italian island of Lampedusa on October 11.
Authorities say 34 people died; more than 200 were rescued.
Survivors have told the UN that 400 to 500 people were on board.
Tens of thousands of migrants from Africa and the Middle East try to cross the Mediterranean Sea each year, seeking a better life in Europe, but hundreds die in the process.
