STORYLINE
U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and his family have toured Jakarta, Indonesia's Istiqlal Mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia.
The Pences removed their shoes at the entrance and his wife and daughters covered their heads with scarves.
Inside they stopped at a large drum called a bedug as a man demonstrated the drumming.
Pence arrived in Indonesia on Wednesday as part of an Asian tour.
The mosque, which can accommodate up to 200,000 people, has become a focal point for the hard-line protest movement against Jakarta's minority Christian governor.
But in a sign of Indonesian diversity, the mosque is directly opposite a Catholic cathedral in central Jakarta.

Animals slaughtered in Indonesia for Eid religious festival
(1 Sep 2017) Residents of Jakarta watched as sacrificial cows and goats were slaughtered on Friday as part of the Eid al-Adha tradition, an annual Muslim holiday.
Each year, the city's Sunda Kelapa Grand Mosque, located in Menteng, the elite area of Jakarta, receives donations of sacrificial animals for slaughter and distributes the meat to the poor.
This year, the mosque slaughtered as many as 12 cows and 51 goats.
However, according to Farouk Rahman, the Chairman of the Committee of Animal Sacrifices, the acceptance of sacrificial animals this year decreased by half compared to last year.
It may be caused by economic factors, he said.
Also, many of the donors have chosen to send sacrificial animals to their hometown directly so that the recipients of the sacrificial meat are not always focused in Jakarta.
Indonesia is home to the largest Muslim population in the world and Eid Al Adha is a national holiday which is celebrated on a large scale.

EXPLORE MASJID ISTIQLAL JAKARTA - RENOVASI MASJID DAN MELAKSANAKAN SHOLAT JUM'AT -ATHALA
First opened to the public by Indonesia’s first President, Soekarno, on 22 February 1978, the grand Istiqlal Mosque of Jakarta is the largest mosque in South East Asia both in structure and capacity, as it can accommodate congregations of up to 120,000 people.
Located at Jalan Taman Wijaya Kusuma in Central Jakarta, on the north eastern corner of the Merdeka Square, the Istiqlal Mosque stands out with its 45m diameter dome and tall minarets. Standing almost right across the old Catholic Church at the corner of Jalan Lapangan Banteng, the Istiqlal mosque was designed in 1954 by Frederich Silaban, a Christian architect from North Sumatra. The idea for the need of a national mosque was inspired by Muslim leader KH Wahid Hashim and executed by Cokro Aminoto, then minister for religious affairs. Istiqlal meaning ‘Independence’, is a reminder of Indonesia’s struggle for national Independence. Its 17 years construction was personally supervised by President Soekarno.
The mosque has a large rectangular prayer hall with a 45 meter diameter dome supported by 12 round columns, and has 4 levels of balconies. Its interior is mostly simple.
In his brief 18 hours visit to Indonesia on 9th and 10th. November 2010, US President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama made a special visit to the Istiqlal mosque. An aside note which the President heard from the leader of the mosque, and which he relayed to the press, was that during Christmas mass, the mosque’s parking lot is used by the Cathedral’s congregation across the road. And vice-versa during Ied prayers.
Later President Obama praised the Istiqlal Mosque as a symbol of religious tolerance which characterizes Indonesia and Indonesians, inspiring the world.

Masjid Raya Menambah Suasana Islami Jakarta
Hiruk pikuk pekerja diiringi desingan plat baja warnai pembangunan Masjid Raya Jakarta siang tadi.
