Tamarindo Beach in Tamarindo, Costa Rica
Tamarindo Beach in Tamarindo, Costa Rica
Tamarindo is a town and district of the Santa Cruz canton, located on the Nicoya Peninsula on the Northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica in the Province of Guanacaste. Tamarindo is the largest developed beach town in Guanacaste, and the second-largest in all of Costa Rica, behind Jacó. The district has a population (as of 2011) of 6,375. The main attractions are surfing and eco-tourism.
Towns belonging to the district besides Tamarindo are Villarreal, Santa Rosa, Garita Nueva, Hernández and San José de Pinilla.
From simple beginnings as a quiet fishing village Tamarindo, Costa Rica has developed into one of the most popular destinations in the Guanacaste province. This town supports a beautiful beach, a range of accommodations, and a number of restaurants. The main boulevard includes various boutiques and art galleries.
Tamarindo Beach is a long beach with great waves. The currents here can be strong so watch the posted advisories when swimming, but much of Tamarindo Beach is perfect for those just learning how to surf. The vibe of Tamarindo is best described as “Party and Play.” Great swimming, surf, fishing, and water sports during the day, buzzing nightlife come sunset. Because of its central location, tourists often base themselves here and explore Guanacaste over a number of days. Younger crowds enjoy the local bars and discotheques. Situated only 1 hour away from the Liberia airport, we recommend renting a car and exploring these well-maintained roads at your leisure.
Surfing in Tamarindo
Without a doubt, there’s one thing that seems to have the greatest draw for this boomtown – surfing. The breaks in the area are some of the best in the world, as evidenced by the several international surfing competitions held here every year. The beautiful beaches are popular thanks to the consistency of the waves, and the town is a perfect jumping-off location for beach and point breaks along the coast. The calmest water for swimming can be found on the southern end of the beach while the water just off the busiest part of town is best for surfing. The nearby river mouth offers breaks that are perfect for the more experienced.

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica - Best Beach Party- OBD Friday Nights at The Lazy Mon at Stanford's
The Lazy Mon at Stanford's is a bar located in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica and situated right on a Caribbean beach. During the day The Lazy Mon is a chill bar where you can relax and play pool, ping pong, watch sports or just sit back and enjoy the ocean view. For more information check us out on Facebook or look us up online.
How the Lazy Mon was founded:
The Chapman brothers and close friend first landed in Costa Rica in 2005. At the time they worked in the restaurant and bar industry in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and heard rumors of the impressive surf down in Costa Rica. They headed south for a vacation somewhere on the Caribbean Coast…but ended up finding a new home.
Today, The Lazy Mon beach bar and restaurant in Puerto Viejo draws huge crowds for their live music events.
“When we came first, we befriended local expats, surfed, drank out of coconuts, and had the most amazing experience of our lives,” recalls the brothers. “Even though we were only there for three weeks, we vowed to return and open a bar here someday.”
For the next seven years they made several trips per year to the small Caribbean surf town, bringing along other friends. When one of the brothers got married they even chose to honeymoon in Puerto Viejo and other parts of Costa Rica. They intended on settling down in San Diego.
Yet on one of their final nights in Puerto Viejo, they discovered an opportunity. Sitting directly on the beach in the center of town was an abandoned disco, Stanford’s. In its prime Stanford’s was a cultural landmark. It overlooked the famous Salsa Brava surf break and at night came alive with reggae music and dancing. The newlyweds wondered if they could revitalize it.
“At the time, we did not have the money to invest in the bar, but we came to the realization that it was possible to make this dream come true”.
So they called their friends who had also fallen in love with Puerto Viejo over the years: The original 3 pioneers and their wives plus OBD (another bartending friend and amazing DJ) went in on the project. “We told them that separately we might not have a lot, but that together we could live out our dreams”.
The six friends agreed to invest, with five of them moving to Costa Rica to run the business.
In November 2010, they opened The Lazy Mon restaurant and bar on the beach. Today it brings expats, families on vacation, backpackers, and local surfers together.
In June 2011, a hostel was added upstairs. However, their main focus comes from live music and party nights. “We saw a model that worked in some of the major bars and restaurants we worked in—like the Hard Rock Café. We took what we knew and combined it with what locals told us the town needed”.
A few months after opening they started a Sunday Open Jam with live music acts and the opportunity for anyone in the crowd to come on stage and share their talent. The first Open Jam brought 20 people. Today, hundreds crowd around the bar on the beach to listen to soulful songwriters, dance to a salsa band, bob their heads to rappers, and watch live fire shows. Gradually other nights of the week have become popular as well, with live music at sunset daily.
“We’re surrounded by our friends and family in a unique, beautiful, thriving part of the Caribbean”. “We love owning the bar.”
