Elephant Round-Up Festival in Surin, Thailand
In November we were invited to check out the Elephant Round-Up Festival in Surin Province. The ethnic Kuy people from this area were historically elephant hunters and specialized in capturing wild elephants and domesticating them to work and fight in war. Today this might seem barbaric, but looking back at a time before modern machines it is pretty understandable. It must have taken incredible bravery to capture a wild elephant with only primitive tools. We know there is a lot of controversy around elephant tourism and in the past we’ve generally avoided it and recommended against it. At the same time there is no denying that elephants play an important part in Thai culture and history and it seems fair to have a festival that celebrates that. What do you guys think?

World's Largest Elephant Festival in Surin Thailand - 4K!
The Surin Elephant Round-up and Elephant Parade is a cultural festival held every year in Surin Province, Isan, Thailand. It is the world's largest Elephant Parade/Buffet! The event is usually organized during the third week of November on the weekend.

Surin is the province that has the largest population of captive elephants in Thailand. Surin Project began to work as a volunteer program, planting food for the elephant and hiring the mahout family to work with our project, leasing their elephant, allowing them to have an income independent of street-begging.

Surin Elephant Round-Up 2015 Part 2 - Thai Dance
One of the dance routines. The festival is one week long usually in late November. The tickets for the round-up come in 4 prices
40 b ($1.15) standing room only on the ground behind a fence (not recommended unless you are there really early and can be at the fence can be 5 deep during the show)
300 b ($8.60) these are stadium seats on the west side of the stadium and since the show is in the morning they are pretty much in full sun unless you are in the upper seats.
500 b ($14.25) these are stadium seats on each end of the grandstand on the east side in full shade
1000 b ($28.50) these are stadium seats in the middle of the grandstand on the east side in full shade
the show started at 8:30 am on Sunday the last day and lasted for about 3 hours
