Mastering Calligraphy in Suzhou, China
If you haven't heard of Suzhou, you need to this. This is the artistic center of China and it has been that way for 2500 years. The traditional culture of China is still so alive and vibrant in this lovely, well preserved ancient city, which has famous gardens, impressive IM Pei Suzhou Museum and of course, many master craftsman still practicing the arts of their forefathers.
I visited the city to learn more about the traditional culture from the skilled locals of Suzhou themselves. In this episode, I learn more about calligraphy from a master calligrapher and even get to try it out myself. Suzhou was famous with calligraphy, with one of the most well known art schools, the Wu School, being based right here many centuries ago.
We set up in a teahouse in the stunning Garden of Cultivation and stroke by stroke, I attempt to understand more about this art that was considered one of the highest arts in China.

Amazing Chinese Art- Kesi in Suzhou (Chinese Tapestry)
Kesi, which is also called Chinese tapestry, can be tracked back to Tang Dynasty, but it was widely used in Southern Song. And in Ming dynasty, it became super popular. People can use it to make pictures, calligraphy, copy paintings and so on.
It needs patience to finish a piece of work, which usually takes a long time. Now, the craftsman who knows this skill mainly gathers in Suzhou, Jiangsu province. As it is a time-consuming work, and the materials that are used on the work are all silk, the price of the artwork is normally high. But it has the value of enshrinement.
Nowadays, Kesi can be used on clothes making, bags or shoes decorating, pictures making and so on. They even can weave out pictures of people.
To enshrine or to know more of Kesi, please contact us!!!

Chinese Arts and Crafts: An Introduction to Xuanzhi
Xuanzhi is a kind of paper used by Chinese intellectuals for calligraphy and painting. The biggest Xuanzhi factory—Anhui Hongxing Xuanzhi Factory—has sent the best workers from two affiliated factories to make a giant piece of Xuanzhi, which is 11.6 meters long and 3.3 meters wide. Even these experienced workers find it hard to adjust to such a large scale.

Qing-style furniture, different from Ming-style furniture, emerged at the early period of the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty and matured at the late years of his reign, with a time span of about 40 or 50 years.
Markedly different from the exquisite Ming-style furniture, the Qing –style furniture is noted for being profound and solemn. It is featured by its extensive use of materials, increased sizes and plump postures, rich variety and diversity. The furniture can be decorated with ivory carving, bamboo carving and lacquer carving and embedded with patterns made of wood, bamboo, stone, china, mother-of-pearl. The decorative patterns use various homophonic names of auspicious words. For example, Ruyi Jade inserted in a treasure bottle means Safety and Fortune; the combination of magpies and plum blossoms represent Eye Twinkle with Joy.
The formation of the Qing-style furniture was closely related to the social atmosphere o f the Qing dynasty. It represents the magnificence of the Manchu's unification of the nation and their pursuit of wealth and luxury.
The Master of the Nets garden, then called Ten Thousand Volume Hall, was first constructed in 1140 by Shi Zhengzhi the Deputy Civil Service Minster of the Southern Song Dynasty government.[1] Shi Zhengzhi was inspired by the simple and solitary life of a Chinese fisherman depicted in philosophical writings. After his death the garden passed through numerous ownership and subsequently fell into disarray until around 1785 when it was restored by Song Zongyuan, a retired government official of the Qing Dynasty. He drastically redesigned the garden and added multiple buildings, but retained the spirit of the site. He often referred to himself as a fisherman and renamed it the Master of the Nets Garden, as an allusion to the simple life of a fisherman.
Ownership passed to Qu Yuancun, a scholar well-versed in the classics and literature, in 1795. He added and remodelled buildings, planted trees, and arranged stones. The garden acquired the nickname of Qu's Garden during this period as well as its first acclaim by critics. Ownership passed to Li Hongyi, an imperial official and master calligrapher in 1868. About half of the steles in the garden are inscribed by him. Ownership passed to He Chang in 1940, who restored both the garden and returned the name back to Master of Nets Garden. He stipulated in his will the garden should be donated to the government. In 1958 his daughter He Zehui gave the garden to the Suzhou government.
During the late 18th century it was recognized for its herbaceous peonies. In his Notes on the Master of Nets Garden, Qian Daxin stated, A good integration of the delights of the village and town. Modern critic Chen Congzhou feels that the Master of the Nets Garden is the best representation of all classical Chinese garden art, as stated in Famous Classical Gardens of China.

Jade carving in tier 1 master jade carvers studio. Suzhou, China
A compilation of jade carving clips filmed by myself during studies to china in 2015.
There are four areas featured. The first clip is a factory working in Guangdong province working some features on a bowl.
The last clip is at the jade cutter in the jade alleys of Xiang Wang Lu in Suzhou china, and mid way is a clip of CNC carving in the same area.
excluding those 3 clips the remainder are all filmed in the studio of tier 1 master carver Qu Li Jun. there are 3 clips where master Qu is working himself, the rest are clips of his workers in the small studio working on pieces designed my master Qu or designed in his style and carved by these carvers. All of these carvers are young, i would guess under 30 with a very good eye, art knowledge and phenomenal skills.
Some blurry shots of course:)
