Swallow Falls State Park Maryland
This mountain park is located nine miles north of Oakland, Maryland and contains some of Maryland's most breathtaking scenery. The Youghiogheny River flows along the park's borders, passing through shaded rocky gorges and creating rippling rapids. Muddy Creek Falls is a crashing 53-foot waterfall – a spectacular sight. Tall hemlocks dominate the silent woods. The 1 1/4 mile trail through Swallow Falls guides hikers to some of the most breath-taking scenery in Western Maryland.
The Youghiogheny River and Muddy Creek are white water rivers that contain severe natural hazards, such as waterfalls, violent rapids, swift currents, deep pools, underwater hydraulics, cold water, slippery rocks and rough terrain. Injuries and deaths have occurred in and around these waters. Visitors should be alert for these hazards and EXERCISE CAUTION to protect themselves and any children from potentially life threatening accidents.
Remember, you are responsible for having the necessary skills, knowledge and equipment for a safe and environmentally sensitive visit.

It's worth braving the elements when the views are this good!! Hiking or exploring parks may not seem like an obvious choice for winter activities, but the Deep Creek Lake area has so many spectacular state parks that only get better in the winter! Swallow Falls State Park is one of the most popular destinations in Garrett County and is home to Maryland's tallest free-falling waterfall, Muddy Creek Falls. We recently had a very cold bout of weather and the falls started to freeze! In years past, the falls have even been known to freeze solid. It's truly a winter wonderland!!

Winter Scenes at Swallow Falls State Park, Md 2-28-16
Swallow Falls State Park is a 257 acre park located along the Youghiogheny River, in Garrett County, Maryland. This small park is surrounded by the much larger Garrett State Forest, which is 8,042 acres in size. Attractions at Swallow Falls State Park include: Tolliver Falls, Swallow Falls on the Youghiogheny River and Muddy Creek Falls. With a drop of 53 feet, Muddy Creek Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state of Maryland. Also, within this park is a 37 acre stand of virgin Hemlock and White Pine called Youghiogheny Groveand is said to be the last stand of its kind in Maryland. From the parking lot it's an easy walk to see all of these places. The stairs down to Muddy Creek Falls are pretty steep but not too bad as far as climbing goes. According to my girlfriends Fitbit we walked a total of 1.5 miles and we rate this hike 1.5 out of 5 Billygoats. Thanks for watching!
