On a long dirt road, just 30 miles outside of Parker, Arizona (in literally the middle of nowhere) sits an old copper mining town. Archaeological and historical sites litter this once bustling boomtown and the Bureau of Land Management has done an excellent job restoring and protecting this massive and extinct townsite.
It’s no surprise that we were once again lured to an abandoned mining area full of mine shafts, artifacts and the residual smell of history and danger.
Swansea Townsite was a copper mining town that was settled around 1909. It’s one of the largest ghost towns we have visited so far. At the town’s peak (of about 750 residents), it boasted everything from a car dealership, a moving picture theater, lumber yard and an electric light company (in addition to the normal saloons, barbershops, cemeteries and restaurants). What a cutting edge town, to have their very own electric light company! As you walk the dusty “streets” of Swansea, it’s difficult to imagine a car dealership out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by open mine shafts.
What a journey this copper went on after being mined from the earth. It took a train ride along the Colorado River and ended up on a boat down the Gulf Coast, around Cape Horn to Swansea, Wales (hence the namesake)! That’s over 4,900 miles…….
The townsite sits surrounded by large mountain ranges in every direction. It’s even a steep, curvy and hairy drive into the townsite (so we don’t recommend going when it’s been raining, or with a trailer or large RV). Once nestled into the town, you can’t help but feel safe and thousands of miles away from anyone and anything.
At the entrance to the town, BLM has a kiosk with flyers, maps, historical photos and information as well as pit toilets. We could have spent days wandering and exploring the historical gems hidden within Swansea, and particularly appreciated the massive mine shafts, finding portions of the old railroad and the ramshackled brick buildings from long ago. The old copper mining town still has evidence of the massive copper smelter and dust chamber, which was a rather large and impressive brick building. Due to recent toppling walls and bricks, the building has been fenced off, but you can’t miss the undeniable presence this building had in the town.
The mine shafts are all covered for safety purposes. These heavy duty safety measures allow you to walk over and around the shafts safely, while eerily peering down these deep black holes.
There is an interpretive trail, hiking trails, picnic spots and ATV trails in the area. The interpretive trail takes you through the worker’s cottages, general office, company store, company residences, railroad depot, manager’s house, copper smelter and dust chamber, the hospital and school site along with rusted old cars and magnificent views.
Just like all the ghost towns we have visited, Swansea fell victim to the Great Depression and the last milling was reported in 1944. Today, Swansea gives us glimpse back to our past as well as a reminder at how wild the west really was.
Although there are a handful of small campsites in Swansea, Totally Trailer does not recommend any large RV's or trailers due to the hairy roads getting into the townsite. The campgrounds at Swansea are perfect for small vans or tent camping only. It's a fun day trip and beautiful drive in from Parker, AZ. We recommend parking your RV or camper in nearby Parker.

Take an easy, 23 mile drive to one of the best preserved ghost towns in the state. The abandoned town of Swansea once operated as a large scale copper mining operation. Today, numerous ruins throughout the area make this a must see.

Swansea is a Ghost Town in La Paz County in the U.S. state of Arizona. It was settled around 1909 in what was then the Arizona Territory. It served as a mining town as well as a location for processing and smelting the copper ore taken from the nearby mines.

#MineExploration of Swansea, a ghost town in La Paz County, Arizona, which was a location for The Day of the Wolves, a heist movie starring Richard Egan, Jan Murray and Martha Hyer. I had no idea Swansea and the movie had a connection until I started researching the hike. When I looked up the movie, it answered my 40-year old question: What is that really cool movie I saw when I was kid, where the shotgun wielding sheriff fought off a bunch of bad guys who tried to take over a town? (Where the answer was not High Noon.) Swansea was where the training scenes were filmed. Look at some of The Day of the Wolves monochrome stills, and you can see where Quentin Tarantino lifted some of his Reservoir Dogs visuals.

Swansea is an old mining area in Arizona, that if a small group did not start to restore it it would have been lost forever. Much of our history is being destroyed everyday forever. In this video you will see where they are trying to restore some of the building that were ether torn down or let to decay As far as I know it is through donations and volunteers that the restoration is being done. It has gone slow but at least something is being done to save it. This video is my way of saying THANK YOU to the people that are doing this.

Locked Away- An Internment Camp in our backyard?
Growing up in the “land of the free”, it’s hard to imagine that not too long ago, we had internment camps in our own backyard. And for over 17,000 people, these scars from their past run deep.
Between 1942 and 1945 Poston Camp incarcerated 17,867 Japanese men, women and children. Regarded as the largest and hottest camp at 115 degrees in the summer (with humidity off the Colorado River), Poston War Relocation Camp is located 17 miles south of Parker, AZ and encompassed over 71,000 acres.
Evacuees of Japanese descent were forcibly taken from their homes and only allowed to bring with them what they could carry. The majority of people were from Los Angeles and San Diego, CA and the government saw anyone with at least 1/16th of Japanese blood as a threat to the United States during World War II.
Poston encompassed three camps in the area known as Poston Camps I, II and III. Camp I was the largest and had 36 residential evacuee blocks and each block contained a staggering 14 barracks, a mess hall, rec building, bathrooms, laundry facilities, staff housing, admin buildings, a hospital and police headquarters.
Camp II had even more residential blocks, staff housing, storage and warehouse buildings, a swimming pool. fire station, medical facilities, fire station and carpentry shop.
While Camp III had 18 residential blocks, an elementary and high school, staff housing, admin buildings, a library, auditorium, stage, two swimming pools and a dry goods store.
It would seem as if the internees had their own fully functional city, but the reality of life in the camp was harsh, barren and frightening.
The government only allocated $.40 cents a day for food, so the internees grew their own fruits and vegetables and raised their own chickens and pigs. Housing was extremely primitive and the lack of privacy was incredibly difficult for the Japanese women who were required to do ALL of their daily routines in front of others.
As time passed, 662 babies were born and 221 adults passed away at the Poston Camps and the quality of education and job opportunities were seriously lacking, while hope and morale were fading.
For years, tens of thousands of people were locked away in the desert, forced to start over and build a life out of sand and fear. It wasn't until the spring of 1944 that the executive order was lifted and the internees were finally free.
All that stands today of those indignities are some derelict buildings, a beautiful memorial monument and a haunting reminder of what life must have been like for those imprisoned families.
Although the Totally Trailer gang did not take our RV here and there is no RV camping at the site, it is certainly a fascinating day trip from Parker, AZ. The monument has a few benches and a kiosk with photos and informational brochure too.

Cunningham Peak Ehrenberg La Paz County Arizona
On Sunday July 22, 2018 we ascended up to Cunningham Peak in Ehrenberg La Paz County Arizona in my Toyota FJ to take up the KERU Engineer.
Cunningham Mountain is the highest point in the Dome Rock Mountains, which parallel the Colorado River in southwestern Arizona near the town of Ehrenberg.
Despite the low elevations of the desert near the Colorado River, roughly 400 feet at the AZ/CA state line, the mountain tends to be very abrupt with many rocky ranges, plentiful spires and cliffs. The trail is littered with Cholla and Saguaro cactus as well as snakes, scorpions and swarms of bees.
From the gate to the peak the climb is 100 feet of elevation for every 1/10th of a mile for a little over 1,800 feet or 1.8 miles. At the crest Cunningham Peak is over 3,300 feet above sea level.
The difficulty level with a very capable 4-wheel drive full size vehicle and experience is 8-9 out of 10. Rumor has it that many have tried and failed with some losing their brakes on the way down.
