Sydney Light Rail test on George Street Sydney | 7NEWS
The first daytime test of a tram with passengers on George Street occurred today.
The last tram services rumbled along George Street in 1958.
Background Story:
Government Statement: Testing of light rail vehicles along George Street is now in full swing, with the first tram travelling the length of the street from Central Station to Circular Quay in daylight hours. Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Transport Andrew Constance boarded the first tram to make the journey during the day and travelled from the Martin Place stop to the end of the line at Circular Quay. “This is an exciting day for Sydney with light rail vehicles making their way down the revitalised George Street,” Ms Berejiklian said. “This is just the start of daytime testing along the length of the line and we can expect to see a lot more of it ahead of customer services starting before the end of the year. “The new network will move up to 13,500 commuters an hour during peak time, replacing the conga line of buses which used to sit in traffic on George Street.” Mr Constance again reminded the community to be aware of the changed environment in the area as tram testing becomes more frequent. “Now trams are in the busy CBD day and night everyone needs to be aware, remove your headphones, get off your phone and remember to look both ways before crossing the road”, Mr Constance said. “We’re now on the home stretch of this project and in December, Sydney residents and its visitors will benefit from a better connected city and a transformed boulevard.” New trams hold up to up to 450 passengers, equivalent of up to nine standard buses. This means the new light rail network will have the initial capacity to move up to 13,500 commuters per hour during peak times (7am – 7pm).

Sydney's CBD and South East Light Rail will begin operation Sat 14th December | 7NEWS
Sydney's new tram, the CBD and South East Light Rail, will begin carrying passengers at 11am Saturday 14th December.
Fare-free travel will be offered for the first two days. Services will operate daily from 5am till 1am.
I think Sydney is ready. We've seen lots of people waiting at stop ready to get on - Marg Prendergast - Transport for NSW.
Story:
Government Statement: Trams will carry passengers through Sydney’s streets for the first time in nearly 60 years when the CBD and South East Light Rail opens on Saturday, 14 December. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Transport Minister Andrew Constance today announced the start date for the first light rail service to run down George Street since 1961. “The CBD and South East Light Rail is a big step towards revitalising our city and will transform the way we live, work and go out in Sydney,” Ms Berejiklian said. “Trams will be fare-free for the opening weekend so the community can ride the new light rail to celebrate this historic event. “The new network will move up to 13,500 commuters an hour during peak time in both directions, replacing the conga line of buses which used to sit in traffic on George Street. A coupled tram holds up to 450 customers, the equivalent of up to nine standard buses.” Minister for Transport Andrew Constance revealed the first passenger services will start at 11am on Saturday and run between Circular Quay and Randwick until 1am. “This is an exciting time and we expect a huge turnout at Circular Quay of people taking a ride on the new trams before regular services start on Monday,” Mr Constance said. “With passenger services right around the corner it’s more important than ever for the community to pay attention to safety messages around trams. “We have launched multiple safety campaigns telling people to stay safe around light rail. We need pedestrians to keep their heads up and drivers to stay out of the tram corridor and not queue across intersections.” Services on the CBD and South East Light Rail will run from 5am to 1am every day of the week.
