Ta Keo had to be the state temple of Jayavarman V, son of Rajendravarman, who had built Pre Rup. Like Pre Rup, it has five sanctuary towers arranged in a quincunx, built on the uppermost level of five-tier pyramid consisting of overlapping terraces (a step pyramid), surrounded by moat, as a symbolic depiction of Mount Meru. Its particularly massive appearance is due to the absence of external decorations, as carving had just begun when the works stopped,[1] besides an elaborate use of perspective effects. It is considered an example of the so-called Khleang style.
Plan of Ta Keo
The main axis of the temple is E-W and a causeway 500 meters long connects its eastern entrance to a landing stage on the Eastern Baray, with which Ta Keo was in tightly relationship.[2] The outer banks of the surrounding moats, now vanished, measure 255 m by 195 m.
The first terrace is 122 m by 106 m, its wall of sandstone on laterite basis constitutes the outer enclosure. Along the east side there are two long galleries, whose roofs were probably in wood and tiles.[3] They were illuminated by balustraded windows.
The second terrace is 5.5 m higher. Each of the first two terraces has a gopura at the four cardinal points. Each gopura has three independent passages and a central tower with diminishing tiers.
A continuous gallery (1.4 m width) constitutes the inner enclosure of the second terrace. It has windows only towards the interior and measures 80 m by 75 m. It's really interesting, because it has no door and seems to be purely decorative, and is the first example of Khmer gallery (together with Phimeanakas). Before Ta Keo (e.g. in Pre Rup) there were long buildings that followed the length of enclosures with some discontinuity.[4] However it hasn't a stone vault, probably its roof was made of wood and tiles too.
Jayavarman V was ten years old when he succeeded his father, Rajendravarman, in 968. His early years of reign were rather turbulent and the court officials dominated the royal politics. When he was aged seventeen (in 975), he began the construction of his own state temple, whose modern name is Ta Keo, that was dedicated some time around 1000. In contemporary inscriptions it is called Hemagiri or Hemasringagiri (the mountain with golden summits).[8] It remained unfinished until the reign of Suryavarman I.[9]:135 Yogisvarapandita, a high priest who became minister of Suryavarman I and received the temple from him many years later, says in inscriptions that a lightning strike hit the unfinished building, an evil omen, so the works stopped. Maybe works stopped simply because of the death of Jayavarman V, as there was a struggle for succession. Actually the temple worked continuously as a cult center until the 13th century,[10] and even Yogisvarapandita worshipped the shrines at the first levels of the temple.
A term tightly linked to Hemasringagiri is Jayendranagari (which in Sanskrit means capital of the victorious king), the royal palace or maybe the new capital city of Jayavarman V.[11]:367[12] However the remains of this large hypothesized ensemble are very scarce. Today only a tower in the south-west survives, similar to the corner towers of Ta Keo, with an unusual single door to the south.

Takeo Temple is one of the tallest monuments of Angkor, the Takeo is a mountain temple build by Jayavarman V, found a little East of Angkor Thom.Its five sanctuaries are placed on top of a 22 meter high five stepped pyramid, from where there are good views of the surrounding area. Admission Fees : To be able to enter the premises of Angkor, you need to have a ticket. The ticket price is one-day ($20), three-day ($40) and seven-day ($60). The ticket is personal and not transferable, will be also printed a photograph our (taken at the time of pick up the ticket at the box office).
Timetable for visit Temples : Visiting hours are 5:00AM - 6:00PM. Angkor Wat closes at 6:00PM, Banteay Srey closes at 5:00PM and Kbal Spean at 3:00PM. Always carry your ticket. It will be checked upon each park entry and at major temples.

Ta Keo (Khmer: ប្រាសាទតាកែវ) is a temple-mountain, in Angkor (Cambodia), possibly the first to be built entirely of sandstone by Khmers.

These are the steepest stairs I've ever seen anywhere. If you put your arm out whilst standing straight you can easily touch the steps in front of you. Coming down them is even more fun. You wouldn't want to fall, this first section alone is about 4 stories tall. And above this are another two sections.

On the road to Angkor Thom we pass the 1000 year old Ta Keo temple. The Ta Keo temple was built by King Jayavarman V and King Suryavarman I, but never completed. At that time it was the most monumental building of the Khmer and should serve as a state temple. But a lightning strike was considered as evil omen and therefore the construction was discontinued. Except for few reliefs, the temple remained virtually in the shell.
Suryavarman I is said to have given the temple the scholar Yogiswara Pandita, however, he didn't feel worthy enough to live at the top terrace level
Ta Keo is the first temple that is completely built with sandstone. The sandstone had to be transported from the highlands, 30 km away.
Spean Thma (The bridge of stone)
A few hundred meters away the road crosses the Siem Reap River. The archaeologists puzzled for a long time, how as the powerful Khmer Empire could disintegrate so fast. Meanwhile, the mystery seems to be solved.
The decline began well already under King Suryavarman II who was considered as one of the greatest rulers of the Khmer. He was the builder of Angkor Wat, built as the state temple. However the religious orientation went to Vishnu, whereas his predecessors worshiped Shiva. After his death a few years of turmoil followed. In addition to disputes about the throne, the Cham conquered the Khmer capital, by surprisingly using the waterways and the Tonle Sap Lake. Only 10 years later, Jayavarman VII could again ascend the throne, after he had defeated the Cham. The disputes with the Cham went on for several more years, but in the meantime Jayavarman VII launched a gigantic program for the building of temples. In addition, he had built a new seat of government, Angkor Thom.
Jayavarman VII was a Buddhist, unlike its predecessors, who were Hindus. Presumably his followers had changed faith, so he was forced to construct new temples. But this came at a price. In the temple were not only monks, but also dancers, servants, guards, craftsmen, etc. Ultimately, hundreds of thousands of people were employed in the temples of Angkor and had to be cared for by the remaining population.

Auf dem Weg nach Angkor Thom passierten wir den ca. 1000 Jahre alten Tempel Ta Keo.
Der Tempel wurde von König König Jayavarman V. und König Suryavarman I. errichtet, aber nie fertiggestellt.
Er war bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt das monumentalste Bauwerk der Khmer und sollte als Staatstempel dienen. Doch ein Blitzeinschlag wurde als böses Omen gewertet und deshalb der Bau eingestellt. Bis auf wenige Reliefs ist der Tempel quasi im Rohbau geblieben.
Suryavarman I. soll den Tempel dem Gelehrten Yogisvara Pandita überlassen haben, der sich aber als nicht würdig befand, die oberste Terassenstufe zu bewohnen.
Ta Keo ist der erste Tempel der vollständig aus Sandstein erbaut wurde. Der Sandstein musste aus dem 30 km entfernten Bergland herantransportiert werden.

Wenige hundert Meter weiter überquert die Straße den Siem Reap River. Lange rätselten die Archäologen, wie das mächtige Reich der Khmer so schnell zerfallen konnte. In der Zwischenzeit scheint das Rätsel gelöst zu sein.
Der Verfall begann wohl schon unter König Suryavarman II. der als einer der größten Herrscher der Khmer galt. Er war auch der Erbauer des Tempels Angkor Wat, der als Staatstempel errichtet wurde. Doch die religiöse Ausrichtung ging zu Vishnu. Im Gegensatz zu seinen Vorgängern, die stärker Shiva verehrten. Nach seinem Tod folgt einige Jahre der Wirren. Neben Thronstreitigkeiten eroberten die Cham die Hauptstadt der Khmer, indem sie überraschend die Wasserstraßen und den Tonle Sap See benutzten. Erst 10 Jahre später konnte Jayavarman VII. wieder den Thron besteigen, nachdem er die Cham bezwungen hatte. Die Streitigkeiten mit den Cham gingen noch einige Jahre weiter, doch in der Zwischenzeit startete Jayavarman VII. ein gigantisches Tempelbauprogramm. Außerdem ließ er sich einen neuen Regierungssitz bauen, Angkor Thom.
Jayavarman VII. war Buddhist im Gegensatz zu seinen Vorgängern, die Hinduisten waren. Vermutlich hatten auch seine Unterstützer und Anhänger den Glauben gewechselt, sodass er gezwungen war neue Tempel zu errichten. Doch das hatte seinen Preis. Im Tempel waren nicht nur Mönche, sondern auch Tänzerinnen, Bedienstete, Wachleute, Handwerker usw. Letztendlich waren in Angkor hunderttausende Menschen in den Tempeln beschäftigt und mussten von der restlichen Bevölkerung mitversorgt werden.

Built around the year 1000 AD, Ta Keo Temple is a steep, pyramid style temple mountain located in Angkor and is made of purely of sandstone. It is believed that the temple was built to symbolize Mount Meru, which was the center of all physical and spiritual universes, with the sun, moon and planets revolving around it. Ta Keo Temple was never finished, and although scholars cannot agree on the cause, one theory is that a lightning strike at the temple caused the building works to be halted as it was considered a bad omen. Ta Keo Temple has been left in a permanent state of being unfinished. Ta Keo Temple is located in Angkor, just outside Angkor Thom. The stairs to the upper levels of the temple are steep and not for everyone, but it’s still worth a look even from the bottom levels. If you can climb all the way to the very top, there are small Buddha statues inside where you can light incense and say a prayer. Climbing Ta Keo Temple up seems to be easier than coming down. We recommend going very early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day.
THE 5 GATES TO ANGKOR THOM – SOUTH GATE There is nothing more magnificent than the architecture found throughout Angkor Thom. The Bayon, which is the ancient capital of Angkor Thom, is a temple constructed with over 200 serene faces and the five gateways to Angkor Thom pay homage to that same design. There are 5 gates into the ancient city of Angkor Thom. The gates were built by King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th or early 13th centuries, around the same time that the Bayon was built. On approach to the South Gate, the left side of the causeway has 54 statues of Gods, who have many different expressions. On the right side of the causeway, there are demons. Each tower of the 5 Gates to Angkor have four faces, in the same style as the Bayon and are framed by elephants wading and picking lotus flowers.

Ta Prohm (Khmer: ប្រាសាទតាព្រហ្ម) is the modern name of a temple at Angkor, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, built in the Bayon style largely in the late 12th and early 13th centuries and originally called Rajavihara (in Khmer: រាជវិហារ). Located approximately one kilometre east of Angkor Thom and on the southern edge of the East Baray, it was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university.( )
Ta Prohm to współczesna nazwa śwityni wybudowanej w stylu Bayon w okresie między XII i XIII w n.e. i oryginalnie nazywała się Rajavihara. Położnona ona jest ok kilometr na wschód od Angkor Thom. Świątynia została ufundowana przez króla Jayavarman VII jako klasztor buddyjski i uniwersytet.
