Queensland - Paronella Park
Paronella Park, Heritage Gardens, Queensland Australia
is located at Mena Creek, Queensland, Australia, 120 kilometres south of Cairns. Paronella Park was built in the 1930s by José Paronella, a Spanish immigrant. José Paronella built facilities, including tennis courts and a cinema and a ballroom inspired by Spanish castles, to provide entertainment for the public. Since his death, a fire, a cyclone and several floods have badly damaged the park and the buildings. This is a magical place to visit.
Tablelands Lake Tinaroo & Paronella Park
Last stop up along the Atherton Tablelands was Lake Tinaroo. It has more than 200 kilometers of shoreline when filled to capacity. When we visited it was down to an all time low of just over 35% which had restricted the lake's recreation use somewhat with only a six-knot speed limit and water skiing ban.
Pizza was the order of the night for Logan's Birthday at the picturesque town of Yungaburra at the local Pizzaria.
Paronella Park has long been on the list of much see places to visit. A fascinating story of Spanish immigrant José Paronella's dream to build a castle in Far North Queensland starting in the 1930's. Paronella Park has gone through some disasters in its time - floods, fire & cyclones, and the current owners are in the process of ongoing restoration and preservation projects in the aim of reviving the Park with a focus on maintaining the property while staying true to its historic and eco values.
Road Trip 2017 - Part 17 - Back road to Atherton Tablelands, QLD, Australia
On the return trip I turned off the Bruce Hwy and onto the Silkwood Japoon Rd heading inland using the backroads to get to the Palmerston Range Road. The back roads are made up of the Silkwood Japoon Rd, Innisfail Japoon Rd and just north of South Johnstone, turning left onto the Henderson Drive (this is in the next part)
Silkwood is a town located in the Cassowary Coast Region of Queensland, Australia. The state school opened in 1916 and the St John Catholic School founded in 1948. During the 1940’s, Silkwood was the site of significant Italian immigration. Sugarcane is the major industry. There are Banana plantations between Silkwood and Mena Creek.
Mena Creek is also located in the Cassowary Coast Region. Mena Creek falls is located in the town and in 1932 a Spanish immigrant, Jose Paronella, settled near the falls and began building a house modelled on a Spanish castle. Paronella Palace, now set in Paronella Park, includes playgrounds and a swimming pool at the bottom of the falls. The park is listed on the Queensland heritage register.

Tourist destination
Rene in English - Paronella Park Spanish Castle
Everyone has a dream but not everyone's dreams are fulfilled. Jos' Paronella's dream was to build a castle. He chose a special part of Australia and created Paronella Park. On 5 Hectares beside Mena Creek Falls he built his castle, picnic area by the falls, tennis courts, bridges, a tunnel, and wrapped it up in an amazing range of 7,500 tropical plants and trees (now a lush rainforest!). It opened to the public in 1935.
Paronella Park has received multiple Queensland tourism awards, is State and National Heritage listed and is a National Trust listed property.
