Rabindranath Tagore's house - Jorasanko Thakur bari - archival footage
Popularly known as the ‘Jorasanko Thakurbari’, Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral house is now a museum dedicated to the life and works of the Nobel Laureate. Built in 1785, the Jorasanko Thakur Bari is spread over 35000 square meters. Today the building houses Rabindra Bharati University, inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru on Tagore’s birth centenary, 8 May 1962. Within the complex is Maharishi Bhavan, named after the poet’s father, Maharishi Debendranath Tagore, where, as the plaque outside reads, “Rabindranath was born breathed his last here.” Today this house is a museum that has three galleries dedicated to Tagore, members of his family and the Bengal Renaissance. The galleries provide glimpses of intimate family photographs, live size portraits and Tagores evolution as a poet philosopher.
Unparalleled in talent, the Tagore family has produced stalwarts in the world of art and literature. The greatest among them was Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Also fondly known as ‘Kavi guru’, meaning the poet of poets – he was greatness personified in the field of art and literature. His most commendable work, ‘Geetanjali’ meaning offering of poems, had won him the prestigious Nobel Prize award. Tagore has always been a source of inspiration for the contemporary poets, writers and art lovers.
The museum has also preserved works of other eminent members of this illustrious family like Maharshi Devendranath Tagore, Jyotirindranath, Abanindranath and Dinendranath Tagore. It has also preserved the clippings of Tagore and a number of pictures and paintings of him and the entire family. The gifts received by him on different occasions are also present in the Rabindra Bharati Museum. The museum also has a section that stores old musical records. The Museum also includes possessions and information of the other great personalities of the 19th and 20th Century, who excelled in the field of Literature.

The Orient West Choir live recording from Tagore House, Kolkata, India 2013.
Snow is a composition by Dalia Faitelson.
THE ORIENT WEST CHOIR is a modern, contemporary interpretation of the
musical connections between the three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
The composer and Grammy Winner Dalia Faitelson, has created a personalized re-interpretation of Gregorian chant music. She has rewritten the original Latin chants into Hebrew and changed their subject matter into forces of nature. Her aim is to convey spirituality beyond a specific religion and to embrace the glory of nature though music. The beautiful Gregorian chant serves as a perfect backdrop for this message and embraces its original function.
The roots and modalities of Gregorian music can be traced back to Middle Eastern roots and ancient Jewish culture. Dalia Faitelson pays tribute to this heritage by incorporating Middle Eastern music into her compositions thus unifying the roots of cultures that have diversified over the past 2000 years.
The result is a unique and remarkable project that serves to transcend cultural, religious and political boundaries.

Rabindranath Tagore[a] FRAS (/rəˈbɪndrənɑːt tæˈɡɔːr/ (About this sound listen); Bengali: [robind̪ronat̪ʰ ʈʰakur]), Bengali: রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর, Phonetic transcription: Robindronath Ţhakur, Latin transliteration: Ravīndranātha Ṭhākura[2] (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941),[b] sobriquet Gurudev,[c] was a Bengali poet and musician[4][5] who reshaped Bengali literature and music, as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Author of Gitanjali and its profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse,[6] he became in 1913 the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.[7] Tagore's poetic songs were viewed as spiritual and mercurial; however, his elegant prose and magical poetry remain largely unknown outside Bengal.[8] He is sometimes referred to as the Bard of Bengal. Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced) and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla. The Sri Lankan national anthem was inspired by his work

Tagore House Kalimpong - Rabindranath Tagore Heritage House Kalimpong
Tagore House Kalimpong - Rabindranath Tagore Heritage House Kalimpong (Darjeeling district of West Bengal). One of the popular tourist spots in Kalimpong (North Bengal). Tagore House of Kalimpong is also known as Gauripur House , Pratima Tagore House. A must visit heritage building where Rabindranath Tagore lived and penned few poems as well. Location of Rabindranath Tagore House is near to Kalimpong Town. Must visit tourist place of Kalimpong Gauripur Pratima Tagore House.
Kallimpong’s Chitrabhanu. (once Guru Rabindra Nath Tagore’s summer home).
Rabindranath Tagore's House at Kalimpong
Whenever Rabindranath visited Kalimpong he stayed at Gauripur House. On 25th April 1940 he recited from this house, the poem, Janmadin through a telephone, not the ones that we know though, but the older funnier ones. It was broadcast live. He wrote many poems when he was residing in this house.
Gauripur House which is located within a walking distance from Alkananda Resort used to be the summer retreat of the famous Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. He had come to Kalimpong for the first time in 1938 and stayed in Gauripur House for almost fifty two days and wrote some unforgettable poems such as Janmadin, Jarathikali, Jaksha and Maya. He again visited and stayed in Gauripur House during 1940 and wrote several poems viz, Namkaran, Jalil Sansar, Apaghat etc.
He had inaugurated the first ever telephone line connecting Kalimpong and Kolkata and during the inauguration he had recited his famous poem Janmadin from Gauripur House. Even today one can see the Camphor tree planted by Tagore in front of Gauripur House.
On 25th April, 1940, it was from this house that he recited the poem Janamadin. It was done through a telephone system installed in this house that was linked with the All India Radio, located in Kolkata. In addition, he wrote several poems while residing in this house. His last visit to this house was on 28th September, 1954 after which he never returned.
‘Kabi-guru’ Rabindranath Tagore had celebrated his 78th birthday in Gauripur House here in Kalimpong.
Gauripur House and the structure is now in ruins. It is owned by a Kolkata resident and has been looked after by three generations of a family. The place is now surrounded by an overgrowth of grass and weeds and the structure itself is on the verge of collapsing any time.
Two houses in Kalimpong and Mongpo in the Darjeeling hills, where Rabindranath Tagore penned some of his memorable poems, were damaged during the earthquake that rocked certain parts of northeast India on Sunday. Chitra Bhanu cottage at Atisha Road in Kalimpong was also damaged.
Officials said the ground floor on the rear portion of 'Gauripur Niwas' in Kalimpong, where Tagore lived in mid-1930s, collapsed during the temblor. 'Rabindra Bhavan' at Mongpo, where Tagore stayed towards the end of his life, has also developed cracks in the front portion. A small part of the stone wall in the east wing of the Chitra Bhanu cottage collapsed and multiple cracks have developed in the structure.
Protima Devi, Tagore's daughter-in-law, built this cottage about 43 years ago to train women of the Hills in arts and crafts. SEPT 2011

Travel Guide to India (Part 1): Calcutta
In Part One of my India travel video guide, I begin my travels in India with Calcutta (Kolkata). India had long been on my bucket list of countries to travel to in the world, and in April, 2013, I finally made it there, starting with Calcutta, with no better reason than the fact was I knew so little about that part of the country.
Calcutta was once the capital of the British Empire in India, and today it's home to over 14 million people, which means the city itself is a crowded, dense, loud, but endlessly fascinating place to explore. In this video I explore the alleyways and grand buildings that make up B.B.D. Bagh, the area where the city was founded.
After checking out a parade (a very common occurrence I was to later learn) and grabbing a roadside cup of chai, I stop at the home of famed poet and writer Rabindranath Tagore, the first Indian to win the Nobel Prize, and whose home is a great place to learn about Calcutta's cultural history.

Walking To: Rabindranath Tagore's Birth Home; Kolkata, India
I left my house today because it was a sunny day, and I just wanted to film. So I made my way to Jorasanko Thakur Bari, and I am super glad I went! It was a beautiful, inspiring place. If you are unaware of whom I speak: Rabindranath Tagore became the first Nobel Prize Laureate from Asia in 1913 when he received the Literature Prize. He translated a small portion of his own works from Bengali to English in 1912, which lead to his claiming the prize the following year.
A prolific writer of short stories and poetry in his younger years, Tagore would eventually grow to be a prolific painter as well, completing over 3000 works in the later half of his life. Two of my favorite facts I learned today at this museum are (remember, I'm American); Tagore first heard about America through literature when, at age 12 his father assisted him in reading: 'The Autobiography Of Benjamin Franklin,' AND: when Tagore visited Los Angeles for the first time in the 1930's (it could have been the 1920's, but just know it was after he won the literature prize) the people at the airport asked him if he could read and write. Way to go LA, keeping America ignorant.
The cost of 150 Rupees to enter the estate (and 50 more rupees to take photos, but only outside the building) was WELL WORTH THE MONEY. Seriously. Compare this to the 500 Rupees I paid to enter the Victoria Memorial? Honestly, without the cost even coming in to play, if you only have one day to dedicate to a heritage site in Kolkata, GO HERE. The Victoria Memorial was pretty, but I found the Tagore Estate to be much more fulfilling, both for the Mind, and the Soul. Hope you enjoy the video! Best places to visit in Kolkata | Dalhousie square B.B.D. Bagh tour | West Bengal India - 1
Best places to visit in Kolkata | Dalhousie square B.B.D. Bagh tour | West Bengal India (তুমিও হেঁটে দেখো কোলকাতা)- 1
Kolkata is third-largest city and a daily festival of human existence, simultaneously noble and squalid, cultured and desperate, decidedly futuristic while splendid in decay. By its old spelling, Calcutta readily conjures images of human suffering to most Westerners – although that's not a complete picture of this 330-year-old metropolis. Locally, Kolkata is regarded as India’s intellectual, artistic and cultural capital. Although poverty is certainly apparent, the self-made middle class drives the city's core machinery, a nascent hipster culture thrives among its millennial residents and its dapper Bengali gentry frequent grand colonial-era clubs.
This video about 11 heritage tourist places in Dalhousie Kolkata.
Dalhousie square previously called BBD bag, the full form of Binoy Badal Dinesh bag. It contents writers’ building, Lal dighi, GPO, telephone Bhavan, the heritage of Kolkata, HSBC bank, royal insurance building, currency building etc.
Dalhousie Square is one of the busiest areas in Kolkata city. Needless to say, it’s the heart of the city as well. There is an ancient square-shaped pond called ‘Lal Dighi’ and it’s quite popular among the Kolkatans. Around this ponds most of the important building structures and landmarks situated. Like Writers’ Building (Mahakaran), G.P.O., Telephone Bhavan, Currency Building, India Post, Royal Insurance Building and Stephen House etc. Besides, The Reserve Bank of India (main branch) and the Hongkong Shanghai Bank deserve a mention.
B. B. D. Bag is an acronym used for the names three great fighter sons of Bengal, - Benoy, Badal and Dinesh Bag. Today, there is a railway station, bus terminus and a tram depot after the name (BBD Bag).
Visitors/tourist who come to Kolkata always visit these places. The holy churches, ancient, and historical buildings carry the architectural appeal of the past decades. Besides, the Hooghly riverbank, the Millennium Park, Raj Bhavan, Kolkata high court, Babughat invite everyone to visit the place time and again.
The region is located at a walking distance away from the Dharmatala, Esplanade section of the city. However, the area is accessible by the local railways, buses, trams, and jetty services and Kolkata metro as well(the nearest station is central metro station) as well.
