Taiwan Drone Flight: Taiwan, 180km east of China, is known for modern cities, traditional Chinese temples, hot springs resorts and dramatic mountainous terrain. Taipei, in the north, has a number of busy night markets, as well as Chinese Imperial art at the National Palace Museum. Taipei 101, a 509m-tall, bamboo-shaped skyscraper with an observation deck, rises above the city. The verdant mountains of central Taiwan encompass Alishan National Scenic Area, with Tsou aboriginal villages and a narrow-gauge train, and nearby, picturesque Sun Moon Lake. Popular hiking areas include Yushan, a mountain with a 3,952m summit, and the riverside paths of Taroko Gorge, featuring towering cliff walls and turquoise water. Taichung is known for its teahouses. Tainan, Taiwans oldest city, offers numerous temples, Chihkan Tower (a fort originally built by the Dutch in 1653) and local specialties such as fried “coffin bread.” Kenting National Park, in southern Taiwan, is a major beach and water-sports destination. Central and southern Taiwan struck by storm flooding
The Central Weather Bureau lifted its land warning for Tropical Storm Kong-Rey, but says the heavy rain affecting central and southern regions will continue through tomorrow. The storm brought flooding to many areas of Taiwan, and here we take a look at some of the worst hit sections of Taichung and Tainan. Kong-Rey brought unusually heavy rain to Taichung's Shalu District. This mother and child were surrounded by water. On Zhennan Road, a drain had turned into a fountain. This is the second time in a week that Shalu District suffered flooding. Taichung Mayor Jason Hu came to observe the damage.Early today, Taiwan Railways announced that trains on its western line would travel no further than Changhua. Further south, several sections of track were flooded. Affected passengers were stuck waiti
Heavy rains across north Taiwan cause flooding in Taoyuan
Today’s weather front finally delivered rain to relieve northern Taiwan from record high temperatures over the last few days, but the heavy showers caused flooding at Taoyuan International Airport. More than 170 millimeters of rainfall accumulated in just five hours in parts of Taoyuan near the airport, with more than 80 mm of that falling in just an hour. This volunteer is directing traffic under a massive downpour. Today’s strong front arrived suddenly, causing floods that left parts of Taoyuan City’s Dayuan District under more than 30 centimeters of water. People were surprised by the strength of the rains.Puxin in Dayuan District saw the highest rainfall accumulation at 173.5 mm, with local streams and rivers overflowing thanks to the heavy rain. Areas of Hsinchu and New Taipei City also experienced flooding.Wu Yi-fanCentral Weather Bureau ForecasterThe plum rain season is often accompanied by a strong convection effect. All you need is an unstable area of low pressure to create a cyclone effect, which can lead to a heavy downpour in a short period of time. The Central Weather Bureau indicated that Taoyuan’s position on the coast meant it was the first to bear the brunt of the convection effect created by the front’s arrival in north Taiwan and its resulting strong rains.Wu Yi-fanCentral Weather Bureau ForecasterThis radar diagram clearly shows “chimney” patterns, which typically indicate short, intense downpours. The front is predicted to leave north Taiwan by Friday, but forecasters are warning of more changes in the weather on Sunday.
Taiwan rolls out modern tours for the savvy traveler
Last year, a record-breaking 11 million international visitors came to Taiwan. It sounds like good news, but that statistic only tells half the story. More and more of Taiwan''s visitors hail from a wave of do-it-yourself, tech-savvy travelers seeking more value for their money. This means that average tourist spending is going down, and traditional sellers of package tours and hotel rooms are struggling to stay afloat in a saturated market. Many tour operators recognize a need for change in the current milieu. Some are taking brave steps to update what they offer to travelers. Tonight, we bring you on some exciting new tours that may herald a new era in tourism. Our Sunday special report. It’s just past 10 a.m. and Dongmen market in Taipei is buzzing with activity. Today an unusual little group is here, walking among the housewives who are doing their daily shopping.Lin Tsung-han Tour guideThis is an open area, and then, the indoor area. So we’re going to go to the market today. Lin Tsung-han is a chef by profession, but today he is a tour guide for a group of Taiwanese-American travelers. Chen I-ling and her family are back in Taiwan looking for a taste of grandma’s cooking.Voice of Chen I-lingTaiwanese-American touristSo I was born there and then every summer I come back and visit Ah Ma and like hang out and see Ah Gong.Chen LungTaiwanese-American touristAlthough the environment she grew up in was all Western and American food, she has always cherished her memories of Taiwan. She asked us whether we have any of Ah Ma’s old recipes. So we thought, on this trip, let’s put that on the to-do list.Lin Tsung-hanTour guideAt the market they were sampling the food and getting an understanding of the ingredients. They were also interacting with the people at the market. For example, on that stretch of road we passed by earlier, a lot of people were very enthusiastic and offered us fruit to try. Or like the herbal tea vendor. She gave us so many drinks it was crazy. That’s human warmth. That’s the culture of Taiwan, particularly its culture toward international visitors. That’s something many foreigners have told me. They feel that Taiwan and Taiwanese people are very welcoming and friendly. Herbal tea was a refreshing new experience for Chen I-ling. But today is not just about trying new things and getting ingredients. It’s also about cooking. What’s on the menu today is Taiwanese specialties like oyster omelet, braised cabbage and braised pork on rice.Michael WuTravel agency founderWe’re trying to capture the Taiwanese lifestyle and present it to international visitors. We take Taiwan’s culture and way of life and package it in a way that foreigners will understand. This four-hour tour of the market comes at a price tag of US$100 per person. The premium price does not put off visitors. In the past five years alone, 50,000 tourists hailing from 90 countries have taken part in the trips organized by this travel agency. This tour group of 38 members represents six nationalities. They have come to Taiwan for a bicycle trip around the island.William LouHong Kong touristWe have people came here three times. This is our third time. Some are new riders. Good food, good people. We love the country. The bicycle industry is very well developed and all the roads are well constructed for cyclists. And motor vehicles respect cyclists.Taiwan is one of the three biggest bicycle exporters in the world. The country prides itself on the Taiwan Cycle Route No. 1, which circumnavigates the entire main island. There is a wealth of cycling tours offered by bike manufacturers, which supply all the gear and equipment needed for a round-the-island adventure. It’s a new initiative called “bike-packing.” Tourists can take in the views and get up close and personal with local cultures, all on two wheels. Although bike-packing tours aren’t cheap, they have become a hit among foreign visitors. A campaign is underway at the Tourism Bureau to promote these offerings to the world. We are in Yehliu on the north coast of Taiwan. A group of journalists, travel agents and bloggers from Russia are here on invitation from the Tourism Bureau. They’re taking part in some of Taiwan’s newest itineraries. After a visit to the Yehliu geopark, the group goes on a shopping spree, sweeping up souvenirs in the nearby shops. At the end of their 12-day trip, they have only good things to say.Russian travel agentTake the average Russian. Most people don’t really know what Taiwan is. But once we come to Taiwan, we can see that Taiwan is an enchanting and beautiful place.Taiwan. It is home to East Asia’s tallest peak and seas on all four sides. It’s also a melting pot of cultures, including those of the Southern Min, Hakka, the indigenous peoples, and new immigrants. Amid big changes in the needs of tourists, operators are creating new itineraries and getting back to the ba...
Forecasters to know by Wednesday whether new storm systems will affect Taiwan
The Central Weather Bureau says two storm systems are forming that could strengthen into typhoons. The bureau will know by Wednesday whether these systems will affect Taiwan. Monday in Taipei was full of blue skies and puffy white clouds, a return to classic summer weather after last week’s typhoon. But east of the Philippines, a large low pressure system developed into a tropical depression. With a low pressure cloud system also in the area, there is a possibility of another typhoon. Lin Jhih-huiCWB ForecasterCurrently, there’s a tropical depression to the east of the Philippines, and also one near Guam. With these two systems, we can’t discount the possibility of a [tropical storm or typhoon].After Wednesday, the peripheral cloud system has the possibility of affecting our weather, mainly on the northern windward side of Taiwan. We’d also see more clouds in the eastern part of the island, which would bring intermittent rain. The bureau says it would issue an alert if the tropical depression moves past Taiwan’s northeast and strengthens into a typhoon. But the bureau is also looking at the Pacific Ocean, where a high pressure system is weakening, which could pull the tropical depression northwards and greatly reduce the threat of poor weather.

Taiwanese hot spring town still cut off after typhoon Channel NewsAsia
TAIPEI: Taiwanese authorities were rushing to repair roads in the mountainous hot spring town of Wulai on Monday (Aug 10), where 1,100 people were without electricity or water after Typhoon Soudelor ripped through the island.
Landslides triggered by the storm, which hit in the early hours of Saturday and was billed as the most powerful typhoon this year, blocked the main road into the northern township just south of capital Taipei.
People are now able to walk past the area after our emergency repair, but it may take another three or four days for vehicles to get through, Chiang Chien-ming, a chief road engineer at the transportation ministry, told AFP.
About 100 residents in Xiaoyi village who were previously unaccounted for were contacted on Saturday night and were safe.
Soldiers searching the area later also contacted another 10 people previously reported to be unreachable, a spokesman for the New Taipei City fire bureau told AFP.
More than four tonnes of supplies have been flown into the area, mostly instant noodles, bread, and water.
Television footage of the once scenic aboriginal town showed damaged houses, cracked roads, and mounds of rubble.
Soudelor caused at least eight deaths in Taiwan as it flooded rivers, ripped up trees, and triggered landslides. Toppled trees and signboards damaged electricity lines, knocking out power to a record 4.3 million households.
More than 50,000 households were still without power Monday evening, more than two days after the storm. More than 400 people were injured, according to the latest government statistics as of Saturday evening.
Taiwan's farming sector is estimated to have suffered about NT$1.3 billion ($41.1 million)of losses from the typhoon, mainly destroying banana and pomelo crops.
After hitting Taiwan, Soudelor struck the Chinese mainland on Saturday night, killing 21 people there with five more missing, state media reported Monday.

Taipei (; Hokkien POJ: Tâi-pak), officially known as Taipei City, is the capital and a special municipality of the Republic of China. Sitting at the northern tip of the island, Taipei City is an enclave of the municipality of New Taipei City that sits about 25 km (16 mi) southwest of the northern port city Keelung. Most of the city is located in the Taipei Basin, an ancient lakebed. The basin is bounded by the relatively narrow valleys of the Keelung and Xindian rivers, which join to form the Tamsui River along the city's western border. The city proper is home to an estimated population of 2,704,810 (2015), forming the core part of the Taipei–Keelung metropolitan area, which includes the nearby cities of New Taipei and Keelung with a population of 7,047,559, the 40th most-populous urban area in the world—roughly one-third of Taiwanese citizens live in the metro district. The name Taipei can refer either to the whole metropolitan area or the city proper.
Taipei is the political, economic, educational, and cultural center of the Republic of China and one of the major hubs in East Asia. Considered to be a global city and rated as an Alpha City by GaWC, Taipei is part of a major high-tech industrial area. Railways, high-speed rail, highways, airports, and bus lines connect Taipei with all parts of the island. The city is served by two airports – Taipei Songshan and Taiwan Taoyuan. Taipei is home to various world-famous architectural or cultural landmarks, which include Taipei 101, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Dalongdong Baoan Temple, Hsing Tian Kong, Lungshan Temple of Manka, National Palace Museum, Presidential Office Building, Taipei Guest House, Ximending, and several night markets dispersed throughout the city. Natural features such as Maokong, Yangmingshan, and hot springs are also well known to international visitors.
In English-language news reports the name Taipei often serves as a synecdoche referring to Taiwan's national government. Due to the ambiguous political status of Taiwan internationally, the term Chinese Taipei is also sometimes pressed into service as a synonym for the entire country, as when Taiwan's government representatives participate in international organizations or Taiwan's athletes participate in international sporting events.

Taiwan ( ( listen), UK also ), officially the Republic of China (ROC), is a state in East Asia. Its neighbors include the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the west, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south. It is the most populous state and largest economy that is not a member of the United Nations.
The island of Taiwan, formerly known as Formosa, was inhabited by aborigines before the 17th century, when Dutch and Spanish colonies opened the island to mass Han immigration. After a brief rule by the Kingdom of Tungning, the island was annexed in 1683 by the Qing dynasty, the last dynasty of China. The Qing ceded Taiwan to Japan in 1895 after the Sino-Japanese War. While Taiwan was under Japanese rule, the Republic of China (ROC) was established on the mainland in 1912 after the fall of the Qing dynasty. Following the Japanese surrender to the Allies in 1945, the ROC took control of Taiwan. However, the resumption of the Chinese Civil War led to the ROC's loss of the mainland to the Communists, and the flight of the ROC government to Taiwan in 1949. Although the ROC continued to claim to be the legitimate government of China, its effective jurisdiction had, since the loss of Hainan in 1950, been limited to Taiwan and several small islands, with the main island making up 99% of its de facto territory. As a founding member of the United Nations, the ROC represented China at the UN until 1971, when it lost its seat to the PRC.
In the early 1960s, Taiwan entered a period of rapid economic growth and industrialization, creating a stable industrial economy. In the 1980s and early 1990s, it changed from a one-party military dictatorship dominated by the Kuomintang to a multi-party democracy with a semi-presidential system. Taiwan is the 22nd-largest economy in the world, and its high-tech industry plays a key role in the global economy. It is ranked highly in terms of freedom of the press, healthcare, public education, economic freedom, and human development. The country benefits from a highly skilled workforce and is among the most highly educated countries in the world with one of the highest percentages of its citizens holding a tertiary education degree. The PRC has consistently claimed sovereignty over Taiwan and asserted the ROC is no longer in legitimate existence. Under its One-China policy the PRC refuses diplomatic relations with any country that recognizes the ROC. Today, 17 countries maintain official ties with the ROC but many other states maintain unofficial ties through representative offices and institutions that function as de facto embassies and consulates. Although Taiwan is fully self-governing, most international organizations in which the PRC participates either refuse to grant membership to Taiwan or allow it to participate only as a non-state actor. Internally, the major division in politics is between the aspirations of eventual Chinese unification or Taiwanese independence, though both sides have moderated their positions to broaden their appeal. The PRC has threatened the use of military force in response to any formal declaration of independence by Taiwan or if PRC leaders decide that peaceful unification is no longer possible. The PRC and ROC standoff dates from the Chinese Civil War and has extended through the first, second and third Taiwan Strait crises to the present day.

Although the ROC continued to claim to be the legitimate government of China, its effective jurisdiction had, since the loss of Hainan in 1950, been limited to Taiwan and its several outlying islands, namely Quemoy and Matsu, with the main island making up 99% of its de facto territory.

Americans expect - and the law requires - much more. Today's settlement demonstrates our vigilance in protecting America's healthcare consumers and pursuing any corporation that seeks to profit by violating U.S. law, said Acting U.S. Attorney of the Eastern District of New York Miller. To all who might consider introducing misbranded drugs into the marketplace, you are on notice: we remain steadfastly committed to prosecuting such violations of law.
