A friend an I Take a ride from Robbinsville, NC. into Tennessee on The Tail of the Dragon Highway. It was raining and cool outside when we were there we stopped by the deals gap resort. they were closed. we stopped by Killboy's Place he was closed. this reminds me of the scene in The Green Mile where ole boy says all i wanted was some cornbread, well all i wanted was a Deals Gap t-shirt.
Driving Deals Gap, North Carolina aka Tail of the The Dragon
is a mountain pass along the North Carolina–Tennessee state line, bordering the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and near the Little Tennessee River.
Deals Gap is a popular and internationally famous destination for motorcycle and sports car enthusiasts, as it is located along a stretch of two-lane road known since 1981 as The Dragon .[2] The 11-mile stretch of the Dragon in Tennessee is said to have 318 curves. Some of the Dragon's sharpest curves have names like Copperhead Corner, Hog Pen Bend, Wheelie Hell, Shade Tree Corner, Mud Corner, Sunset Corner, Gravity Cavity, Beginner's End, and Brake or Bust Bend. The road earned its name from its curves being said to resemble a dragon's tail. The stretch bears the street name Tapoco Road in North Carolina and Calderwood Highway in Tennessee and is signed entirely by US 129 (hidden SR 115).
Since part of the road is also the southwestern border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, there is no development along the 11-mile stretch, resulting in no danger of vehicles pulling out in front of those in the right of way. It mostly travels through forested area and there are a few scenic overlooks and pull-off points along the route. The speed limit on the Dragon was 55 mph (89 km/h) prior to 1992; it was reduced to 30 mph (48 km/h) in 2005. The presence of law enforcement on the Tennessee portion has dramatically increased since 2007

Here's a lil video tour of the Tail of the Dragon. It's listed as Americas most scenic road, listed as number 4 or 5 as the United States most deadly roads, is very close to the largest dam on the east coast, and was originally a Native American trail that snaked through the mountains. Its was paved in the 1930's, and became so dangerous with 18 wheeler traffic, that they were banned from further use of this road! Located near Deals Gap or Robbinsville, there are plenty of signs to guide you the rest of the way in. If you get lost, just ask a local, and they'll help you out. Hope ya'll like !

Deals Gap is a portion of U.S. Route 129 in Blount County, Tennessee, which also lends its name to a small unincorporated community and motorcycle resort situated in a gap in Swain County, North Carolina, on U.S. 129 at the Tennessee state line.
The Dragon's Tail is a stretch of road that runs from eastern Tennessee into North Carolina. The road is internationally known and auto and motorcycle enthusiasts from all over come to challenge its curves. The nearby Cherohala Skyway is quickly becoming number two with its remote 60 miles of scenic mountain highway. The area also has other incredible roads like the Devil's Triangle, The Snake, and Moonshiner 28. The 11-mile stretch of the Dragon in Tennessee is said to have 318 curves. Went to the North of Mason-Dixon line for a family Thanksgiving and on the way back, I took my Betsy for a spin on the Tail of the Dragon!
to get to the Tail of the Dragon first, I had to ride the Dragon's Tail on the US Route 129 South.
located Southwestern edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is part of US Route 129. It begins at TN-NC State Line and ends at Tabcat Creek Bridge, Tennessee.
That 11 miles of road consists of 318 curves that some are very-very extreme. No guard rails to speak of maybe one or two, here and there... drop from the highest cliff is 4500 feet!
from I-40 (East or West) take the Exit 376 then Exit 376B to Maryville, TN. From Pellissippi Parkway take Exit 11A to S129.
you get to practice the Route 129 driving at a faster speed at 50mph then 40mph until you get to the Tabcat Creek Bridge.
the speed limit on the Dragon is 30mph!
Tail of the Dragon was aired by Discovery Channel's Hell Roads on January 25, 2012.
I've driven rural areas of Pennsylvania and German Alps but the Tail of the Dragon & Dragon's Tail is very-very hairrry at the least... I could only use third or fourth gear. I came in with checkered flag at 20 minutes 59 seconds on the Dragon's Tail.
for Poops and Giggles only.
according to my mathematics;
convert 20 minutes 59 seconds = 20.983 minutes.
convert to hours 20.983/60 = .34972 hours
then 11 miles / .34972 hours = 31.45 mph.
that is my average speed on the Dragon's Tail.
conversely, 11 miles / 30 mph = .367 hours x 60 minutes
= 22 minutes!
that's the time it takes to drive the Tail of the Dragon iff you drove at posted speed limit. IFF one drives in 11minutes one way then that person's average speed on the Dragon is 60MPH! a speed racer. a LEO wants to see you...

Tail of the Dragon Thrill Ride
The winding roads of the Tail of the Dragon near Deal's Gap has probably injured or killed as many bikers than any other road in the United States.

The famous Tail of The Dragon, Deals Gap, Route 129, NorthCarolina-Tennessee, is one of the greatest motorcycle and sports car road in America. With 318 Curves in 11 miles, it is a ton of fun.

Very nice road...this is not the Tail of the Dragon #129 per se, but it is one of the roads leading to the start/end of it. This road in the video is the 129 heading back SE to Robbinsville, North Carolina from the Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort and Store where the Tail of the Dragon starts in NC and heads into Tennessee. About a 40 minute ride back to Robbinsville, but very pleasant nonetheless. Taken in the early evening.
Another great road is the one that goes to FONTANA DAM close to the Resort.

Video and a few photo clips of my day leaving Asheville, NC for Helen, GA via the Blue Ridge Parkway, US 441 (Great Smokey Mountains National Park), the Foothills Parkway and this video ends at the overlook on US129 / Tail of the Dragon.
After several visits and getting rained on, I had nice weather. It was a fantastic day to be out riding.

Tail of the dragon bites two monday 7-27-15
Took a road trip to tail of the dragon on 7-27-15 with a friend, we had a great ride. Temps were perfect we seen two that had been bitten by the dragon that day. Its was an awesome ride 1707 miles in total.

Trip to the Tail Of The Dragon
Traveled from West Texas to North Carlina. Only clips of the Mississippi River, I-85 in Atlanta, GA, 11 miles between Helen, GA (I-75 / I-17) to State Route 180. As well as 12 miles of Hwy 129 between Topton, NC and Robbinsville, NC made it to this short film. Camped at Simple Life Campground and Cabins. Great people, peaceful and affordable rates.
