Xiamen, China - Taiwanese Folk Village
Phil, (the guy getting carted away in the chair) told me that we shouldn't sit on the front row, but I insisted. As soon as the show started, they came and dragged him up on stage. I really have no idea what they were saying. I just know that they made him drink 3 shots of extremely strong liquor. If you speak Chinese, perhaps you can leave a comment and let me know the gist of what is being said. That would be nice.
The video quality is horrible because somehow moisture got into my camera. You can still see what it is going on though.

A Tulou Hakka Village Huang Dong Bay, China
On the drive back to Yangshuo from somewhere, guide Mark mentioned that Hakka people lived in this area and I asked, Are there any tulou? To which he replied, Yes. Okay, then, let's drive and see what it looks like. Steve and I saw many tulou in Fujian county two years ago (videos uploaded on my channel) that we became tulou'd out but this tulou was different from those because it was built on one level.
A tulou is a traditional communal residence in Fujian province of Southern China constructed in a multi-level, circular design surrounding a central shrine. They were designed for protection, think fortress and are gorgeous.
This one-level tulou was not so gorgeous but still the only one-level tulou we've ever seen.

Lukang Tour (Taiwan)
Lukang or Lugang / 鹿港 is an urban township in northwestern Changhua County, Taiwan. The township is on the west coast of Taiwan, facing the Taiwan Strait. The township's name came from the port's trade of deerskins during the Dutch period. Lukang was an important sea port in the 18th century and 19th century. It was the most populous city in central Taiwan until the early 20th century. In March 2012, it was named one of the Top 10 Small Tourist Towns by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan.
The township's name came from the port's trade of deerskins during the Dutch period. Its old Taiwanese name was Lok-a-kang (鹿仔港) and its shortened version is seen in English texts and maps as variants such as Lok-kang, Lokang and Lo-kiang. In 2011, the Ministry of Interior decided to keep the historical Wade-Giles spelling Lukang and abandon the change to the Pinyin spelling Lugang that had been gradually taking place since Taiwan switched to Pinyin in 2009.
During the Qing Dynasty, the depth of Lukang's harbour and its proximity to Fujian province on mainland China made Lukang an important trading port. During Lukang's heyday from 1785 to 1845, Lukang's population reached 20,000. Lukang was Taiwan's second largest city after current Tainan and was larger than Bangka (now a district of Taipei), then the island's third-largest city.
The subsequent silting of the harbour and the city's refusal to allow railroads to pass through the city led to losses in trade in commerce, which, in turn led to Lukang's decline relative to other cities, which were experiencing considerable urbanization and population growth. This same decline, however, averted the modernization processes that demolished historical buildings in Tainan and Taipei, leaving Lukang preserved as it was in its heyday.
During the period of Japanese rule, the city was Taiwan's fifth most populous city, with a population of 19,805 according to the December 1904 census. The Hoklo people in the area were predominantly of Xiamen and Quanzhou origin, thereby speaking the Quanzhou dialect of Hokkien. Nanguan music is highly popular in Lukang and originates from Quanzhou.
In 1920, Lukang was governed as Rokkō Town (鹿港街) under Shōka District of Taichū Prefecture.
There are still many old temples in Lukang, such as Longshan Temple and Matzu Temple. The city boasts over 200 temples dedicated to a wide variety of folk deities. The town is also the origin of the terms ē-káng (下港) and téng-káng (頂港) used respectively to refer to southern Taiwan and northern Taiwan; the literal meanings of the terms are below the harbor and above the harbor.
The Yuzhenzhai (玉珍齋) cakes are famous local specialties, as well as Lukang's Ox Tongue Cakes (牛舌餅) and oyster pancakes.

A Journey To Kinmen Part 2 金門 - 回家走走
This is my cousin 蔡顯揚 Raymond Chua's second trip to Kinmen. This time he brought his parents and sister to visit our hometown Kinmen 金門 in Taiwan. His parents and sister have never visited Kinmen 金門 and it was the first time for his father to visit the old traditional house where his father and great grandfather used to stay. I have created this home video with a sense of humour to make it more entertainment and at the same time to learn more about the culture. Enjoy! Click here to watch Part 1 where Raymond visit Kinmen on his own for the first time.
China's Centuries-Old Hakka Houses
Take a look at china's centuries-old Hakka Houses.
China is home to many forms of unique architecture. One example is the Hakka Houses.
The buildings were first built in the 12 century and construction continued on until the 20th century. The circular structures are reminiscent of apartment complexes, being home to many families and serving as a historic community.
These rural dwellings are also referred to as Fujian Tulou. There are approximately 20,000 of these buildings scattered across the Fujian province. The houses were designed to protect its residents from bandits.
The huge structures form together in a micro-community which is equipped with its own food storage, temples, armories and free space for livestock. Many residents have built gun holes inside the apartments to serve as a defense mechanism against intruders.
Nevertheless, the underlying beauty of the structures remains. In 2008, UNESCO deemed the Hakka Houses a World Heritage Site, citing them as a perfect example of 'tradition and function.'
Although each apartment building varies slightly, most of them range from three to five stories high with clay tiled roofs. Each structure has only one entrance, protected by a wall and gate. Beautiful stone, cobbled walkways contribute to the outwardly visual appearance of the houses.
