$5,000 Mango at Auction ー but WHY? ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Japan is famous for it's luxury fruits sold at auction for ridiculous prices! But where does that value come from? Is it all a marketing stunt, or do they really taste that good? We see them in the stores and they're expensive. So ー what is the true value?
Let's go to the Miyazaki Mango Auction and ask the buyer of the world's most expensive mango and the farmer.
The answer to WHY surprised me. It's not what I thought.
We not only learn about mangoes but Japanese culture.
Background:
Annually at auctions in Japan, the first blue fin tuna sells for over $1 million at New Year, melons in Yubari, Hokkaido sell for $30,000, and in Miyazaki, Mangoes sell for $5,000. How can a mango be worth so much? Is it the taste? The size? The smell? The color? The cultivar? All of the above? ー or just to get attention? ... or is it something more?
There is a deep respect for the farmers from the buyers and the stores that sell these luxury fruits. Of course buying a mango for so much money will get attention, but the motivation is completely different and I hope you can get a deeper understanding of not only mangoes but how Japan operates in business.

A complete tour of the Kaiwo Maru sailing barque in Toyama, Japan
The Kaiwo Maru is a former Japanese training barque. She was built by Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation in Kobe, and was launched on 27 January 1930 alongside her sister ship Nippon Maru. The Kaiwo Maru was operated by the Tokyo Institute for Maritime Training to train officers for Japan's merchant marine. At the beginning of World War II, her sailing rig was removed and she served as a training and postwar transport motorship. In 1955, her rig was reinstalled and she resumed her training voyages until she was replaced in 1989 by her successor, also named Kaiwo Maru. She is now a museum ship located in Imizu, Toyama.
The Kaiwo Maru measures 97 metres (318 feet) long, with a beam of 12.95 metres (42.5 feet) and a draft of 6.90 metres (22.6 feet). Her gross tonnage is 2,286. She is rigged as a four-masted barque, with 32 sails covering 2,397 square metres (25,800 sq feet), and two 600-horsepower diesel engines for auxiliary functions. During her career as a training ship, she was manned by a crew of 27 officers, 48 seamen, and 120 trainees.

【EXPO70】The Tower of the Sun 太陽の塔 1
2018年12月27日@万博記念公園
太陽の塔
The Tower of the Sun
There are several sculptures and artworks dotted around Osaka Expo Park but the Tower of the Sun (“Taiyo no To” in Japanese) is the biggest and the most famous. This 65 meter high structure of concrete and steel was created by artist Taro Okamoto and built as part of the Big Roof Festival Plaza at the original Expo. Though the plaza has gone, the tower remains as a popular symbol of the park and stands in its center. On the tower you can see red lightning flashes and three faces. The face at the top is a “Golden Mask” which represents the future, the “Face of the Sun” between the two outstretched arms represents the present, and the “Black Sun” on the back represents the past. The interior of the tower was originally open as an exhibition space and has been opened at irregular intervals since the Expo closed, but at present it is closed to the public. The tower is located within the park’s Natural and Cultural Gardens.
Osaka Expo Park is a massive park and recreational facility that was created on the site of the 1970 Japan World Exposition. The park’s official English title is “Expo ’70 Commemorative Park” and in Japanese “Banpaku Kinen Koen”. With 264 hectares of grassy lawns and trees the park features gardens, museums, and enough entertainment facilities to fill an entire day’s excursion.
The park is neatly divided into northern and southern sections by an expressway and overhead monorail line that cut across it. Most of the park’s major attractions are located in the northern part and here you can find the Natural and Cultural Gardens, the Japanese Garden, and three different museums. To the south of the railway line there is a large commercial and entertainment facility called Expo City which includes Japan’s tallest Ferris Wheel, as well as a soccer stadium, a baseball field, a hotel, and a housing park showing the latest model residences. Here are some of the highlights.
Japanese Manhole Covers: Drainspotting Adventure & Factory Tour ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Manhole covers are trending high in Japan and for good reason -- they're stunning! Only in Japan are manholes to cover sewage designed so beautifully that they now make MANHOLE TRADING CARDS! (Travel around Japan and collect them all. They're free!) The craze is real, folks.
There's even a new word for manhole enthusiasts: MANHOLERS
In this episode, John travels around the country as a manholer in search of Japan's best designs. He also visits Nagashima Imono Casting Factory where manhole covers are made and finds out why they have designs and are painted. He also visits the Manhole Summit for the latest news and designs.
FACTS ABOUT JAPANESE MANHOLE COVERS:
★ They were a way after WWII (World War 2) for Japan to spread the importance of its new sewer system project.
★ Okinawa (Naha city) was the first designed manhole in 1977. It had fish on it.
★ Now 95 % of all municipalities in Japan have customized manhole covers.
★ There are over 12,000 designs around Japan!
★ Manhole covers are sometimes painted for commemorative covers or for inside areas without vehicles like shopping arcades and parks. The paint used is a top secret mixture.
★ Designs represent local culture, history, mascots or sports teams: things citizens are proud of.
About Manhole Cards:
The cards are free and you have to physically go to each location to get one. It's first come, first serve.

Large scale umbrellas - Madinah. covering the pilgrims worldwide with membrane architecture
Taiyo Kogyo Corporation, a manufacturer of large scale membrane structures, has performed the membrane fabrication work of large scale umbrellas (25.5m on each side) for pilgrims visiting the Prophet's Holy Mosque located in Al-Madinah (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). It is known for being one of the two holy mosques of Islam, and contributed to the success of a glorious national project which was officially completed in August 2011.
These large scale umbrellas were planned by the Saudi Arabia government to provide sunshades for the Islamic pilgrims who visit the Holy Mosque of Madinah. Saudi Binladin Group (President and General Manager:Eng. Bakr Binladen Project Director :Eng. Talaat Mously) , the largest general constructor in the Middle East with considerable experience, was the prime contractor while the engineering, manufacturing, and on-site installation of the umbrella system were performed by Liebherr Intertrading AG (Germany), which is renowned worldwide for its cranes and construction machinery.
The large-scale umbrellas, ranging 25.5m on each side consisting mainly of equal squares, are bell-shaped suspension-tensioned membranes, which open and close automatically like folding umbrellas. The total membrane area is 162,000 square meters, and the excellent fabricating skills are required for the complex design.
To meet those needs, Taiyo Kogyo Corporation after receiving orders from Liebherr Intertrading AG to fabricate membranes, has built an increasingly automated exclusive production line in the Hirakata factory, which took an active part during the fabrication process of the Osaka Expo (EXPO 70), and the remarkable skills of the workers have been passed on to the younger generations. Taiyo began the production in April 2008 and completed the delivery of the 250th umbrella in May 2010.
The membrane material is made from 100% PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) weaving material, which was developed and produced specifically for this project, ensuring the fire resistance for the safety of the pilgrims, long-term durability against the harsh Middle East weather conditions, and flexibility for everyday use. In addition, as the facility itself is a core religious site of the Islamic faith around the world, the splendorous ornamentation far exceeds the norms of any architectural concept in Japan, such as the elaborate designs coloring the membrane and the metal attachments using lavishly gilded gold.
The large-scale umbrellas were successfully completed in August 2011, welcoming pilgrims from all over the world in a soft atmosphere. This is the first time for a Japanese company to receive the honor of manufacturing products for the Second Holiest site in the Islamic world. This is because our abundant past achievements all over the world as well as the Japanese distinct high-quality product creation were highly valued.
Taiyo Kogyo Corporation will continue to contribute people's life of affluence by participating in projects in various parts of the world and providing comfortable high-quality spaces.
Characteristics of membrane fabric
The membrane material is 100% PTFE (polyterafluoroethylene plastic) weaving material (weight: 900g/m², thickness: 0.6mm) developed especially for this project.
PTFE (polyterafluoroethylene plastic) has nonflammable characteristics, being used on items such as frying pans.
The membrane material has high durability and is chemically inactive. This enables the membrane to sustain under the harsh Middle East weather conditions for a long term.
The material is not coated, this is highly flexible, and enables everyday opening and closing.
