2017 Mikurumayama festival in Takaoka, Japan

Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival at Takaoka, Toyama.

DYA717 July 7, 2016 Toyama, Takaoka, Toide
6:30 a.m. breakfast at the Takaoka Manten Ekimae Hotel. Then I caught the local train to the Toide station to look around. Got there at 9:15 or so. Toide is just about ending a week’s celebration of their Tanabata festival. I knew was too early for anything exciting happening but I just took some quick pictures of the street decorations. The locals were just setting up their various food and other booths. I went back to Takaoka on the next local train. It was hot by the time I returned to Takaoka. Another hot and sweaty, humid day. Went from the train station to the Takaoka Zuiryuji Zen Buddhist temple which is a designated national treasure, the only national treasure in Toyama prefecture. 500-yen to enter. Then went across the other way to the Tomb of Toshinaga Maeda which is the tallest/largest tomb in Japan of a daimyo feudal lord. Then went way across town. I ran into the Great Buddha of Takaoka which is rated #3 of great Buddhas in Japan next to the Buddhas in Nara and Kamakura. The original Takaoka Buddha was built in the 1700s but it burned down. Finally in 1933 they made this large copper one.
Oh yeh, Takaoka prides itself as being a historic, cultural town of artisans and craftsmen. They are famous for copperware and lacquerware. You’ll see copper statues all over town.
A short distance from the Great Buddha is the entrance to Takaoka Kojo, a castle ruins park. Only some walls and moats remain as they couldn’t re-build the castle under the one castle per domain rule. Lots of copper statues around in this park. Nice green park for walking around and/or relaxing. Was getting close to 2 p.m. so I picked up some snacks for lunch/dinner combo and went to the hotel to relax a little.
I jumped on the train after 6 p.m. It was filled with students going where evers. A lot of them got off at my Toide stop. Walked around the areas with the Tanabata displays. Lots of food and game stands were open. It was still lighted but the Tanabata displays had their lights turned on. Too bad it wasn’t darker but I didn’t want to stick around too late because they had only 1 train per hour back to Takaoka.
