The Camp Richardson neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe, CA
Camp Richardson is one of the most historic areas on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe.
Reminiscent of a time gone by, this resort area is home to year round activities as well as opportunities for relaxing. The Tallac Historic Site is located here and one can stroll through the site and enjoy what the residents and visitors did in the late 1800's and early 1900's. This area has campgrounds, cabins, restaurants, a marina, local store, activity rentals and much more.
Home ownership in this area is quite rare and opportunities to buy property are few and far between. Since there are very few homes in Camp Richardson, living here puts you in an exclusive group. This area is mainly comprised of lakefront homes just south of the Tallac Historic Site.

Let's Go To Vikingsholm
Nestled within tall cedars and pines and upon the shore of Emerald Bay sits this majestic Scandinavian summer house which was built for Lora Josephine Knight in 1929.
While driving on the Californian side of Lake Tahoe, you can park above and take a one-mile hike down towards the shore where tours during the summer months are offered to those who wish to see this well preserved mansion. You can also boat in and park along the shore, as well as visit Fanette Island, Tahoe's only island, to climb to the top and see Mrs. Knight's original tea cottage, the stone remains are still there.
Michele and I enjoyed our hike and tour. For more information you can visit:

About halfway along the route from the Y at South lake Tahoe to just before Emerald Bay, there's a historic site that's noteworthy. Tallac Historic site contains the historic estates of the Pope, Baldwin and Valhalla. These buildings are open during the summers in various capacities for viewing and experiencing. The Baldwin house is now a museum, the Pope home can be toured as you are lectured by volunteer guides relating the fascinating history of this part of Tahoe. The Valhalla hall may be rented for various occasions such as weddings / receptions and is also the site of many concerts during the summer. Nearby, the boathouse has been converted into a performing arts center. The original huge doors that faced the lake can be opened (now the rear of the stage) and a glass wall allows the audience to witness the lake in all its glory during performances.
Camp Richardson is slightly before the Tallac Historic site. There's a tremendous amount of history at Camp Richardson also. Alonzo Richardson in 1921 leased the property and set up stage service from Placerville to Tahoe. Three years later he bought the property and continued to develop the resort. By 1926 he had a hotel, cabins, a dance pavillon, gas station and dining room. A huge pier was built that allowed the steamer Al Tahoe to stop daily with the mail. Many of these building and structures are still present today. By 1967 the resort was becoming increasing difficult to run and far less profitable so the families decided to transfer the property from Baldwin Beach through Camp Richardson to Pope Beach to the USFS for care-taking. This was accomplished with the USFS or government transferring NOT one dollar for the property. The concessions are today run by independent contractors under a special use permit system.
The end of this part of the drive is slightly before Emerald Bay, just before the tight switchbacks of the roadway. The next section includes Emerald Bay which is the premier scenic attraction of the entire drive around the Lake.
