An interesting round trip through legendary countryside. Miracles of nature, history and culture come to life along this worthwhile route, which focuses on the mystical Tamina Gorge.
From the spa town of Bad Ragaz, this route takes you straight into the Tamina Gorge. After a good hour you reach Altes Bad Pfäfers (return trip possible by bus through the gorge). Today Switzerland's oldest baroque bath house, where kings and princesses used to bathe, is an oasis of nature, culture and enjoyment with a nationwide appeal. It houses 2 museums and the Paracelsus memorial.
Not far from Altes Bad Pfäfers is the entrance to the «spring grotto». The admission fee is CHF 5 (turnstile) and is very worthwhile: The path leads 450 metres into the crag to the grotto where the hot spring water gushes from the rock. Back in Altes Bad Pfäfers the descent begins, taking you across an unmade bridge and finally out of the gorge towards Pfäfers.
The placid village is dominated by the impressive baroque monastery church and the former Benedictine abbey. Past the Wartenstein ruins, downhill along the former «Porta Romana» military and trading road, and finally along the Rhine riverbank, the circular trail takes you back to Bad Ragaz.

The rock walls of the mighty Tamina Gorge extend up to 200 meters in the air. They are a wonder in their own right.
Add to this that the dark gorge is also claustrophobically narrow and the River Tamina rampages through it, and you have the perfect spectacle .
During summer nights, the Tamina Gorge is nearly pitch black. Here and there, through clefts in the rock, a bit of stray light still penetrates all the way down to the Tamina. With a deafening roar, the river carves its way through the soft sandstone day and night.
The monks in the nearby Pfäfers Benedictine monastery feared the monster well into the 13th century. Back then, the steam would already billow fearsomely from the entrance to the gorge. In 1242, some brave bird catchers found the hot spring, and there was no dragon to be seen. The surprisingly hot water pours in huge wafts of mist onto the cold rock of the Tamina Gorge, producing endless amounts of steam.
The Tamina hot spring is referred to as an acratotherm - a pure, warm spring with light mineral content. The water comes from the watershed of the Tödi River, seeps along the crystalline rock layers and, about ten years later, emerges in the Tamina Gorge at a constant temperature of 36.5 degrees C.
In 1535, the famous doctor and naturalist, Paracelsus, vouched for the healing qualities of the thermal water and praised its virtue, power, and effect. Some 300 years later, as people demanded more comfort, the bathers no longer were willing to risk life and limb for the precious water. Finally, on May 31, 1840, they inaugurated a four kilometer long water main from the Tamina Gorge to the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz.

Thermal hot springs spa water.The water is warm, 98 degrees fahrenheit and no sulfur smell at all! Zero sulfur!!!!. Just like being in a big giant jacuzzi! I love it. All natural indoor and outdoor pools. The pure hot springs water is piped in from the Tamina gorge, Europe's largest naturally occurring thermal spring.

Hello,
We are back in the Swiss mountains. After seeing the Gorges de l'Ardeche and Gorges du Verdon in Provence, France, we decided to explore some Swiss gorge. This time we hiked along the Tamina Gorge. We started from Bad Ragaz, walked to Bad Pfäfers, entered the Tamina Groge and then hiked up to the town Pfäfers. It is absolutely a beautiful hike.
Bad Pfäfers, the natural mineral springs, were discovered accidentally in 1240. The water has a temperature of 36.5 degrees Celsius. The old house of Bad Pfäfers leads to the narrow Tamina Gorge with 70-meter-high rock faces. We walked along the path through the interior of the rock and saw the thermal spring up to the grotto. The gorge is definitely worth seeing! It is a different type of scenery from the Swiss alps.
There is also a light show called Light Ragaz every evening in the summer. I found a youtube video. It looks amazing and reminds me of the light show of the cathedral I saw in Strasbourg, France.

Der über tausend Kilometer lange Rhein mündet in die Nordsee und hat eines seiner Quellgebiete am Bündner Oberalppass (2'044 m ü. M.). Nordwestlich von Bad Ragaz teilt sich die A13 von Chur (595 m ü. M.) kommend in Richtung Walensee im Westen und zum Bodensee nördlich davon. Bad Ragaz ist bekannt für seine Thermalbäder.
Der Kurort im Sarganserland versorgt seine Bäder aus der Taminaschlucht, wo bei Bad Pfäffers (680 m ü. M.) aus einer bereits im 13. Jahrhundert entdeckten Quelle 36.5°C warmes Thermalwasser hervor-sprudelt. Mit einer Gondelbahn kann über Pardiel (1'627 m ü. M.) von Bad Ragaz aus das Skigebiet Pizol erreicht werden. Der Pizol (2'844 m ü. M.) befindet sich südwestlich des Talortes.

The more than 1,000-km-long Rhine empties into the North Sea and has one of its source regions at the Graubünden Oberalp Pass (2,044 m above sea level). The highway A13 coming from Chur (595 m above sea level) splits northwest of Bad Ragaz towards Lake Walen in the west and Lake Constance north of it. Bad Ragaz is known for its thermal baths.
The health resort in the Sarganserland region supplies its baths from the Tamina Gorge, where near Bad Pfäffers (680 m above sea level) 36.5-°C-warm thermal water springs from a source which has been known since the 13th century. The skiing area of Pizol can be accessed via a gondola cableway from Bad Ragaz via Pardiel (1,627 m above sea level). The Pizol (2,844 m above sea level) lies south-west of the valley town.
