Glowing antlers failed, so Finns try app to save reindeer
(16 Dec 2016) LEAD IN:
In the past they've painted the antlers of reindeer with fluorescent colours, hung reflectors around their necks and even used movable traffic signs.
Now, Finnish reindeer herders are trialing a new smartphone app in a bid to prevent the thousands of deaths of reindeer that happen every year on Finland's icy roads.
STORY-LINE:
Feeding time at Anna-Leena Jankala's family reindeer farm, called Poro-Jokela, in Narkaus, Finnish Lapland.
Between the nearby snow-covered forest and this bustling pen, the family is rearing around 200 reindeer.
Nowadays, reindeer herding, northern Finland's oldest industry, faces many difficulties, including predators, mining and climate change.
But one is proving particularly challenging for the 10,000 people in the region who rely on the profession – car accidents.
It's always big, says Jankala.
There are accidents from 3,500 up to 4,500. Most of the reindeer killed in the accidents are female and it's always a big loss.
Around 300,000 reindeer freely wander the wilds of Lapland, sometimes described as the last wilderness in Europe.
According to Lapland's Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, Finland's reindeer herding area covers 36 percent of the country's total landscape.
Road accidents often occur during the dark winter months of November to end January.
Reindeer find it easier to walk on ploughed roads, which cut across grazing grounds, rather than through deep snow.
Jankala says the loss of females can be particularly damaging and sets herders back years.
Most of the reindeer killed in the accidents are female, she says. In practice, it's not possible to buy a similar reindeer, you need to raise it.
It takes three years before she can grow up and give birth and you always lose profit because the reindeer herding is for meat production.
In the past, Finnish reindeer herders trialed painting Rudolph's antlers with fluorescent colours, hanging reflectors around their necks and even using movable traffic signs, but none of their efforts seemed to reduce the annual 4,000 plus reindeer road deaths.
Here in Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, it's become such a problem even Lapland's Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment became involved.
Of course it's a big loss for the reindeer herders because if they have 4,000 reindeer or more killed every year, explains director Jaako Ylinampa.
And of course it's a big loss for the actual driver who gets into the collision because even though it's quite rare to lose a life when hitting a reindeer, but it's not good for the animal, it's not good for the car, you have to repair the car, it takes money.
Now, they're trialing a new possible solution – this interactive reindeer warning smartphone app called 'Porokello', meaning 'Reindeer Bell'.
The simple, one-button interface allows drivers to tap their smartphone screens to register any reindeers spotted near roads.
Using GPS technology, this then creates a 1.5-kilometre 'warning zone' that lasts for one hour.
Other app users then receive a warning if they enter the area.
They will be of course more careful, more accurate, see what's close to the road, explains Ylinampa.
If there are reindeer and they reduce speed and when they have passed this warning place then they can get back to the normal speed again.
The pilot project began in June with 1,000 free, app-loaded smartphones delivered to professional drivers, including heavy vehicles, taxis and buses.
It's hard to gauge success so far.
In November 2013, there were 686 reported accidents involving reindeer, while this November that number dropped to 572.
It's hoped the app will be made available to all smartphone users sometime next year.
