Tang Lung Chau Market, a half-deserted market 燈籠洲街市,被半廢棄的街市
Today, Causeway Bay in HK is a shopping spot. We see Department stores, shopping malls, bazaars and boutiques everywhere. Products varies from International brands, trend clothes to daily products. In Jardine’s Bazaar, Center of Causeway Bay, there are lot of HK style restaurant and western restaurants. But strangely, In the street, there is a public market, a half-deserted market. Its name is TANG LUNG CHAU MARKET.
The name of Tang Lung Chau Market comes from a former island Tang Lung Chau Market. The official name of Tang Lung Chau Market is Kellett Island. It was a small island with no people living. In 1841, A small fort was built on it by the British for the protection of the eastern section of Victoria Harbour. And the name of the island was changed to Kellett Island. In 1938, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club moved to the island.
Later in around 1970s, the HK government started the reclamation work and the completion of the Cross Harbour Tunnel. Kellett Island was connected to Causeway Bay. In 1991, a pottery jar containing large quantity of Chinese copper coins was discovered at the island by The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. The coins were dated to Sui, Tang and Songdynasties (589-1279), which means there are people living in the island 1000 years ago already.
The Tang Lung Chau Market was built in 1963. It was the highest public market in HK at the period. At the time, Tang Lung Chau Market was closed to the sea and can see the Kellett Island (Tang Lung Chau), so it was called the “Tang Lung Chau Market”. The government ordered all the bazaars around to move into the market. But there were gangs and seldom people, the business was bad. So the bazaars all moved out again. We may see the decision of the HK Government was wrong building the market at this street.
Following the development of Causeway Bay, it becomes a shopping spot. The residential houses become the commercial buildings but the Tang Lung Chau Market still exist. Actually starting from 2000, the empty ratio of the market was already over 70%. The government needs to subsidy $1,000,000 each year to maintain the operation of the market. In 2007, the government finally planned to close the market but in 2017, the market is still here.
Today I visited the Tang Lung Chau Market. I could only saw around 10 bazaars on the ground floor still opening. Going to the 2nd floor, it was blocked. As there is no security, I went into it. There was already nothing but only few ladders. There was a small chair beside the stair. It should be the security but he was gone. Yes. How can a normal person keep guarding such an empty place hour by hour?
But I got a question. The deserted 2nd floor of the market was clean, no dust, and no spider nets. The floor had been left empty for 10 years. Did the government hire people to clean such an empty place for 10 years!?
Recently many residents reflect that the Tang Lung Chau Market can be reconstructed to restaurant or even bid it out. But 10 years passes, the Government did nothing. This is the efficiency of the HK Government nowadays. Actually not only the Tang Lung Chau Market, there are also 3-4 public markets in HK facing the same situation. And the government see nothing and hear nothing. I am really worry about the future of Hong Kong.
Squatting Cotto,Tang Lung Chau Market,Causeway Bay
This market was built in 1963.It is not surprising that the toilets have been renovated.I regret to say that I should have been here earlier,if only I knew about this market.
Anyway, you probably have not seen a squatting Cotto on video yet.Like Karat, this brand is also from Thailand.Hong Kong seems to be using a lot of Thai brands nowadays.
The flushing sounds like American Standard. However,my personal opinion is that American Standard still sounds a lot better.

'Tai Po /ˌtaɪˈpoʊ/ is an area in the New Territories of Hong Kong. It refers to the vicinity of the traditional market towns in the area presently known as Tai Po Old Market or Tai Po Kau Hui (大埔舊墟) (the original Tai Po Market) on the north of Lam Tsuen River and the Tai Po Hui (the current Tai Po Market; historically Tai Wo Shi, literally Tai Wo market) on Fu Shin Street on the south of the Lam Tsuen River, near the old Tai Po Market railway station of the Kowloon-Canton Railway (British Section). Both market towns became part of the Tai Po New Town in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In present-day usage, Tai Po may refer to the area around the original market towns, the Tai Po New Town (Chinese: 大埔市), or the entire[according to whom?] Tai Po District.
Tai Po as a populated place, could be traced back to the Stone Age. Archaeological site in Yuen Chau Tsai, had discovered stone axe and pottery which was believed to be made in Neolithic era.[7] The indigenous inhabitants of Tai Po lived by clamming and pearl farming in Tai Po Hoi (literally Tai Po Sea; Tolo Harbour) since at least AD 963.[7] The pearl making business reached its peak during the Song Dynasty[citation needed] and started to decline gradually in the midst of the Ming Dynasty. Tai Po had been developed as a fishing port around the late Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty.[citation needed] While a village that belong to the modern day Tai Po area, Wun Yiu (Chinese: 碗窰), had developed into a center of porcelain industry in the Ming dynasty.[8]
Tang clan migrated from the area north of the border of the modern day Hong Kong to the modern day the New Territories of Hong Kong in the Song dynasty of China. A branch of Tang clan was split from Lung Yeuk Tau of the modern day the New Territories, to establish the village in Tai Po Tau. The Tai Po Tau branch and Lung Yeuk Tau branch also founded the first Tai Po Hui the market town (also known as Tai Po Tau Hui), despite it is now defunct and the area now known as Tai Po Old Market. The area around the first market town, also lived other people that were not from the Tang clan. They formed an inter-villages alliance Tai Po Tsat Yeuk [zh] (literally Tai Po Seven Alliances; each alliance contained one or more villages). The inter-villages alliance founded another market town Tai Wo Shi (literally Tai Wo market) after the Qing government ruled that Tai Po Hui (Tai Po Tau Hui) was belonged to Tangs, other clans cannot open shops in Tang's market town. However, Tai Wo Shi replaced the original Tai Po Hui (Tai Po Tau Hui) as the main market, and took the name Tai Po Hui (anglicized as Tai Po Market). The old market town thus became Tai Po Kau Hui (anglicized as Tai Po Old Market; Jyutping: daai6 bou3 gau6 heoi1[nb 1]).
During the British colonial rule, a District Office, a police station, two railway stations: Tai Po Market railway station and Tai Po Kau railway station (in Tai Po Kau; Jyutping: daai6 bou3 gaau3[nb 1]) and other public facilities were built with-in the modern day area that belong to the new town and the administrative district. Most of them in close distance with the market town of Tai Po at that time.
In the 1970s, the Hong Kong government began to develop satellite towns: Tai Po Industrial Estate, the first industrial estate in Hong Kong was built in the reclaimed land of the former Tai Po Hoi in 1974; Tai Po was named as a site to built new town in 1979,[citation needed] which the government obtain lands by reclamation of the river mouth and Tai Po Hoi. The new town was also designed to incorporate and interact with the existing market town. The first public housing estate of Tai Po New Town: Tai Yuen Estate – was established in 1981. The population has soared to 320,000,[citation needed] and Tai Po New Town began to prosper following the completion of the Tolo Highway which were integrated with the older urban areas.
At present, due to the development of the new town, the place name Tai Po may refer to Tai Po New Town or the historical area centre Tai Po Market, or the Tai Po District (excluding exclave Sai Kung North) that cover the new town and Lam Tsuen Valley and other area. However, the boundary of Tai Po was not defined. In contrast, a namesake election constituency of Tai Po Market had its legally defined boundary, as well as Tai Po District; Tai Po New Town also had its officially defined boundary in urban planning regulation and law. Looking around, it is surprising for the indented rocky shore almost all appearing in red that because the rocks are rich in iron element. They seem to be a red belt horizotally skirting between the green hills and the jade waters that becomes a spectacular picture. The dam on the right was build for the fishpond. There has a nick in the middle of the dam. If the tide is up, the water flow into the pond. When the tide is down, some of the waters remain in the pond to raise the fishes. It presents that the past villagers well understood the rules of the nature, therefore they obtained the intelligence in order to live. Afterward, pass through the dam, it comes to the coast of Tong Pai Tau. Overlooking to the left, Hung Shek Mun Channel could be seen where is only several tens of meters apart from Double Island. Pearl 2013 12 31 Hong Kong Review 2013 part4
<PARTS 3 & 4>
2013 was rocked with scandals involving officials of the HKSAR government.
Development Secretary Paul Chan admitted his wife owned agricultural land in the proposed Northeastern Development Area. But since she sold it last October, he didn't feel he needed to declare a conflict of interest. Later, he admitted he'd handled the matter clumsily, and apologised to the public.
With his brainchild, the Mercantile Exchange embroiled in fraudulent documentation charges, chief Barry Cheung asked leung chun-ying to relieve him temporarily of all his public offices, including Exco, but refused to resign.
The ICAC completed its investigation of complaints of malpractice by a public officer and illegal profiteering against another Exco member, Franklin Lam. And the Justice minister decided not to prosecute Lam who subsequently quit Exco.
Former Development Secretary Mak Chai-kwong and Highways Department Assistant Director Tsang King-man were found guilty of conspiracy to defraud and sentenced to 8 months in jail, suspended for 2 years.
A number of Political Assistants, including Ho Kin-chung of the Development Bureau, Mok Yee-tun of Labour & Welfare and the chief secretary's Cheung Shau-lai.
The Audit Department's report criticised the ICAC of overspending. It revealed that during his tenure as Commissioner, Timothy Tong spent in excess of regulations to wine and dine mainland officials. And subsequent probing by an indepedent ICAC group as well as by Legco's Finance Committe found Tong had also given lavish gifts and went on sightseeing trips during official visits to the mainland. Tong and some of his former ICAC underlings faced severe reprimand.
CPPCC deputy Lew Mong-hong accused Leung chun-ying in a newspaper interview of fabricating 3 people's testimonies that Leung had no illegal structures at his home. Lew also said Leung promised to make him an Exco member and recommend him for the CPPCC Standing Committee, but reneged on his pledge.
The ICAC then prosecuted Lew Mong-hong for writing to the Chief executive and the ICAC Commissioner to try to curtail the probe. And it later charged him with 6 counts including fraud and money laundering.
Former Chief Secretary Henry Tang and his wife Lisa were found guilty of having illegal structures in their home and fined $110,000. Tang said he respected the court ruling but felt the penalty was heavier than for other similar cases.
In 2013, Hong Kong was also embroiled in international incidents such as the presence of Edward Snowden, and the consternation of the visiting Manchester United team and their fans over the dismal condition of our soccer pitch.
And a new cruise terminal opened to bring in yet more outsiders.
Tragedy struct in 2013. Nine HK tourists were killed in an air balloon accident in Egypt. And the probe into the fatal Lamma ferry collision was released.
2013 also witnessed events that left indelible memories.
In the ongoing Manila hostage crisis, Leung Chun-ying met with Philippine President Benigno Aquino 111 who later noted he'd never apologise for someone else's wrong doing. The seating arrangement at their meeting also sparked controversy.
Chinese University medical school deputy head Yu Cheuk-man had to stop practicising medicine.
In other news, ATV replaced top executive James Shing with Lui King-bun, 430,000 people reportedly took to the streets on July 1st, a transgender wins an appeal, Hutchison sells off Park and Shop, and the HK government sets a poverty line.
