As part of Bill Callaghan's series of historical films around Britain, he recently visited the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum in West Sussex. Tangmere is steeped in history from its important role as an airfield during both World Wars.

The Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is a museum located on the former site of RAF Tangmere, West Sussex. The Tangmere Military Aviation Museum was opened in June 1982. Many aerospace exhibits covering the First World War to the Cold War are on display including fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and aircraft engines.
Tangmere Military Aviation Museum aircraft are housed in two hangars with a small number on display externally. Several exhibits are on loan from the Royal Air Force Museum including the Hawker Hunter used by Neville Duke to break the airspeed record in 1953.

Four of us had a great day out and as a bonus the Goodwood Airshow was on the same day so we also saw some aircraft fly near. At the end of our visit we went to the old control tower which is still there but very deserted and you could not help feeling the importance of this airfield during the war years where so many departed on a mission never to return...

During the annual close down period, the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum volunteers have been working behind the scenes to update some of their exhibits.
Including restoration work on one of their aircraft, which saw them having to create special tools to complete the job.

We exist in the 1940’s as virtual squadrons and relive critical World War 2 aerial campaigns, flying both as Allied and Axis. Previously flying 'IL-2 1946', 'IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover' and currently enjoying the excellent 'IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles'.
