100 Anniversary of WW1 Somme PT:3 Tank Corps Memorial - Australian Memorial
This place on the Somme battlefield was selected as the place for the memorial because it was near this location that tanks first went into action with the British Army as a new, surprise weapon against the German Army in the First World War. A few miles south of this memorial tanks were used at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette (15th - 22nd September 1916).
An interesting feature of the memorial is the boundary “fence” around the obelisk. In the application to build the memorial the fence was suggested as a way of keeping cattle away from the plinth of the memorial. The boundary fence consists of ten upright 6 pounder tank gun barrels with tank driving chains mounted across them.

From 27th September 1914 the German Army arrived in Bapaume and fought the French Army down the main road towards Albert during the next few days. Blocking the way to Albert, the French managed to hold off the advance of the 26th and 28th Reserve Divisions in this area. The German Army stopped its further advance a few kilometres south of Pozières on the main road at the village of La Boisselle. With the high ground at Pozières securely behind its forward line the German Army here had magnificent views of the countryside for 360 degrees.
During 1915 and into early 1916 the German divisions in this sector of the Somme battlefield constructed a fortified Front Line between the villages of Gommecourt, Beaumont-Hamel, Thiepval, La Boisselle, Fricourt, and Mametz to Curlu on the Somme river. An Intermediate Position consisting of barbed wire defences and strongpoints was constructed behind the Front Line, and behind that a Second Position was built up. This Second Position comprised a series of strongpoints and observation points on good sites of high ground.
The windmill on this high ground was used from September 1914 as a German field artillery observation post and command post. The views were magnificent to the front and rear of this position. The site was built up as a strongpoint just to the north of the fortified village of Pozières.

Tank Memorial World War I Poziere France
The Pozières Tank Memorial commemorates the tank corps. Tanks were first used in this area of the Somme in September 1916.
Four early model tanks surround the obelisk. The memorial was officially unveiled by Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas L. N. Morland, July 1922. Video taken 21 October 2018.

The First Day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916, was the bloodiest day in the history of the British/Commonwealth army.
This video, in which I make several errors (I have left them in and added sub titles where needed)focuses on the Australian Memorial site close to the German windmill observation bunker.
Paired with the Gibralter observation bunker to the west of Pozieres, this observation point, on a slightly raised plateau, gave the German Army a significant advantage over the advancing Commonwealth soldiers (Australian in this area).

The Courcelette Memorial is a Canadian war memorial that commemorates the actions of the Canadian Corps in the final two and a half months of the infamous four-and-a-half-month-long Somme Offensive of the First World War.The Canadians participated at the Somme from early September to the British offensives end in mid-November 1916, engaging in several of the battles-within-the-battle of the Somme, including actions at: Flers-Courcelette, Thiepval Ridge, the Ancre Heights, the Ancre as well as a small role in providing relief to the First Australian Imperial Force in the final days of the Battle of Pozières.The battles on the Somme were the first in which all four Canadian divisions participated in the same battle, although not together in a cohesive formation.The Canadian divisions suffered over 24,000 casualties.

Cimetiere militaire de Flers (A.I.F Burial) (80)
Flers est une commune française, située dans le département de la Somme en région Picardie.
Le cimetière se trouve à 1,6 km au nord du centre du village de Flers, moins d'un kilomètre à l'ouest de Gueudecourt et près de la limite entre les départements de la Somme et du Pas-de-Calais. Au cours de la bataille de Flers-Courcelette en 1916, Flers a été pris par la 41e Division britannique et la Division de Nouvelle-Zélande, où les chars ont été déployés pour la première fois.
Le cimetière a été créé en novembre 1916 par les unités médicales australiennes et est restée en usage pendant l'hiver. À l'offensive allemande de printemps, en mars 1918, Flers est à nouveau tombé dans les mains allemandes, jusqu'à sa libération en août.
Après la guerre le cimetière a été considérablement élargi avec des tombeaux des champs de bataille environnants. Ainsi, au cours des années 1920, les tombes des autres cimetières à Flers, Factory Corner et North Road Cemetery, ont été transférées à l'A.I.F. Burial Ground. À l'occasion de l'agrandissement du cimetière, initialement rectangulaire, le mur à droite de l'enceinte originale a été abattu.
Il contient les tombes de soldats et marins dont 2875 britanniques,67 canadiens ,417 australiens, 89 neo-zélandais, 27 sud –africains , 164 francais ,3 allemands et 60 militaires non identifiés.
The 1st Australian Division Memorial, Pozieres
The First Australian Division Memorial is located close to the German 'Gibraltar' Bunker which served as a lookout during the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
The video shows how this key high point overlooks a massive area in this relatively flat part of the Somme battlefield. Today, the Theipval British Memorial is clearly visable 2 miles away. It was a key stron point and its capture by the Australian soldiers was essential.
The second half of the video looks at the ruins of the German bunker itself, (unfortunately not very well preserved).

Poziere Windmill Anzac Memorial and Cemetery France
Australian cemetery at The Windmill site, Poziere France. Here, the Australian forces took 23,000 casualties and 6,700 died during the first battle of the Somme, 1916. The site is on road D929 on the way to Bapaume, France. Video taken 21 October 2018.

The Battle of Mouquet Farm, also known as the Fighting for Mouquet Farm was part of the Battle of the Somme and took place as part of the Battle of Pozières .It began on 10 August with attacks by the I Anzac Corps and it was captured by the 3rd Canadian Division of the Canadian Corps on 16 September.The farm was lost to a German counter-attack, before being re-captured on 26 September, during an attack by the 11th Division as part of the Battle of Thiepval Ridge , in which No.16 Section of the 6th East Yorkshire , smoked out the last German defenders.

The NZ Memorial in Longueval France is dedicated to the New Zealand Division who took part in the first Battle of the Somme in 1916.
The NZ Memorial is located in isolation in the middle of fields to the north of the village of Longueval and west of Flers.
