Tar Pits Park, Carpinteria, California
This is the layer of sedimentary rock known as the Monterrey formation, from which most of California's oil comes. Here the rock layer is exposed at the surface of the ground by the beach near the town of Carpinteria, California, at a place called Tar Pits Park. Just off the shore can be seen eight oil drilling rigs (not shown in this video), which are extracting oil from this very same formation. Often tar blobs wash iup on shore as a natural product of oil seeping from the rocks underwater. This is also the same rock formation that forms the La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles, as well as most of the oil fields of Los Angeles.

We spent the day fossil hunting marine fossils at Isla Vista on the coastal shoreline in Santa Barbara County and after we headed to Carpinteria Tar Pits looking for vertebrate fossils.
Remember, you can hunt anything you want-- so long as its been dead for millions of years.

However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

Carpinteria State Beach is an excellent white sand beach right in the city of Carpinteria. The state beach starts at Linden Avenue and continues south to Tar Pits Beach at the south end of the park. In between these end points are several campgrounds with over 200 camping spots. At the day-use facility near Linden Avenue you’ll find all the amenities to enjoy a full day here and downtown Carpinteria is nearby with restaurants and shops. Tide pools can be seen at low tide at the south end of the beach near the San Miguel Campground. A lagoon at Carpinteria Creek in the center of the park is a great place for bird-watching. You can walk into the state park from Linden Avenue. If street parking in that area is difficult to find or if you plan on camping here, the main park entrance is on Palm Avenue which you can find on Carpinteria Avenue south of Linden. North of Linden Ave is Carpinteria City Beach where the wide sandy beach continues in front of beachfront homes. Due to tar seeps in the ocean offshore from the state park, tar balls can be found on the beach. Bring some olive oil or another natural oil to clean the tar off your feet at the end of your beach walk.

SUPing in Carpinteria, CA
Had some fun SUPing at Tar Pits in Carpinteria, California while camping at the state park. Swells had good size, but the paddle out was a bit brutal. Wind picked up. Had the spot to myself. I had lost a side fin so I jettisoned both and tried the board with just the center fin for a bit. Did not work out too well but had fun. Watch for the sea lions who were watching me.
