We're proud of our tartan because family names are associated mostly with tartan. So, it's a matter of being proud of wearing the tartan because it symbolises where you're from, it shows that you're proud of being Scottish and it shows your heritage in terms of your family roots.
20. Pan left of tartan dresses
21. Various close shots of tartan material
22. SOUNDBITE: (English) John Webster, Sales Manager, Geoffrey Tailor Highland Crafts:
Originally a tartan was something that was quite simple, it was a check. And it was something that would be hand-woven and it would be dyed using vegetation. So originally, you actually knew where somebody was from because of where they lived and what their vegetation comprised of.

24. Pull focus between suits on display
25. SOUNDBITE: (English) John Webster, Sales Manager, Geoffrey Tailor Highland Crafts:
Early sort of 1700s the kilt was a plain piece of material with just a plain over-check, large piece of cloth that was worn over the shoulders, people would wear it and live in it. And then as it carried on throughout the years, hundreds of years, the Victorians then created something that was more commercially viable.

It had been done in the village or the house, and using natural dyes etc. to being a commercial product, so that's the biggest change. People would get together and help each other in the making of the tartan in the village or in the community.

8. Various of weaving machines and weavers
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Taylor, Chief Kilt Weaver:
On an average day we will produce about 50 yards (46 metres) and it takes about 8 yards (7.3 metres) to make a gent's kilt.

13. Close of modern kilt designer Howie Nickolsby fitting modern PVC Kilt:
14. SOUNDBITE (English) Howie Nickolsby , Modern Kilt /Tartan designer:
To call a kilt a kilt a proper Scottish kilt it has to be three things, it should be pure wool, hand stitched, completely hand stitched and made in Scotland. So as a guy that comes from a modern angle but with such a traditional background I don't want to see the art of kilt making destroyed or lost, so even something like black wool and tweed kilts are completely hand stitched and made in a traditional way
15. Pan up of Howie's modern tweed kilt
16. SOUNDBITE (English) Howie Nickolsby, Modern Kilt /Tartan designer:
The inspiration comes from probably growing up in the kilt industry business. I had seen all sorts around the world, and plain kilts have always been in existence. Irish wear plain saffron orangey colour, plain green. I had always seen tweed kilts. Where I started is I made a PVC hand stitched kilt when I was 18. I had never worn snakeskin or PVC before but thought it was something different to make a kilt in. I wore it to my sister's wedding and went down very well. I then started doing like camouflage and oriental silk designs sort of going along with the idea of trying to make a kilt from anything a man would wear in trousers. So using fabrics like silks, denims even transparent pink PVC - going more for the fetish market.
17. Various of model in PVC kilt
18. Close up camouflage and traditional tartan kilt

20. Close of Nickolsby
21. SOUNDBITE (English) Howie Nickolsby , Modern Kilt /Tartan designer:
We have men in Japan that wear the kilt and all over the world and already all over Europe especially. You know European men can see it in their older culture as well.
22. Wide of tourist Martin walking down the royal mile in a modern black kilt
23. SOUNDBITE (English) Martin Roux, tourist:
This is a fully black kilt. I do not belong to a clan, I wouldn't dare wear a tartan.
24. Various kilt designs
25. SOUNDBITE (English) Nick Fiddes, Scottish Tartan Authority:
The Scottish Tartan Authority is a body which has been set up to promote and list and maintain archival records of all the tartans in existence. Otherwise people can try and record the same tartan again. So it's one place where people can come and find their tartan.
26. Various of traditional kilts
