Norman Ackroyd 諾曼·阿克羅伊德 (1938) Contemporary Realism British
tonykwk39@gmail.com
Norman Ackroyd, CBE, RA (born 26 March 1938 in Leeds, Yorkshire) is an English artist known primarily for his aquatint work. He lives and is based in Bermondsey, London.
Ackroyd attended Leeds College of Art from 1957 to 1961 and the Royal College of Art, London from 1961 to 1964, where he studied under Julian Trevelyan. Subsequently, he lived for several years in the United States. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Art in 1988 and appointed Professor of Etching, University of the Arts, in 1994. He was elected Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art in 2000, and in 2007 was made CBE for services to Engraving and Printing.
In the 1980s Ackroyd emerged as a landscape artist. Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design mounted a retrospective exhibition of these works in 2006 and kept an archive of his work. His works range from minimalist, nearly abstract impressions, to detailed images. His work almost never includes the human figure, the landscape subjects are often of old human habitation. His prints range from tiny etchings intended to be bound into books to huge etchings. His preferred medium for working directly on paper is watercolour, including a recent project pairing his watercolors with poems by Kevin Crossley-Holland, published under the title Moored Man. He has also designed a number of large-scale, etched reliefs in steel or bronze commissioned for architectural projects in London, Moscow, Birmingham, and Glasgow. Recently completed projects include a mural at the Sainsbury Laboratory Cambridge University, showing scenes from the Galapagos, and a door at Great Portland Estates in London, W1. See also published works such as The Stratton Street Series (introduction by Ian Ritchie).
With Douglas Dunn, he has recently published A Line in the Water; the book was designed by Isambard Thomas. Ackroyd's working methods are described in an issue of Archipelago (No. III, Spring 2009).
Ackroyd's work can be found in several British and American galleries including the Zillah Bell Gallery (which holds the largest collection of his work in the North of England), the Tate, the British Museum, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington. He has been in several television programmes, including BBC documentaries in 1980, 2006, and What Do Artists Do All Day? (2013).

Cultural Barbarians - VPRO documentary - 2016
Has art turned into nothing more than a market, where only museums’ visitors numbers count, or the stardom of an artist such as Ai Weiwei? A new generation of artists is fighting this trend and creating explicitly activist art connected to a changing world.
A sculpture of a kneeling Hitler was recently sold for 17 million dollars. The British artist Isaac Julien had the works of Karl Marx read out loud at the last edition of the Venice Biennale, while private yachts were mooring at the quay for the opening, and with Julien himself being sponsored by Rolls Royce. Cultural pessimists announce the ‘end of art’: it is now ruled by money, celebrity, design and digital mass culture.
But the Italian actor Alessandro Baricco, the collective “Assemble Studios” (eighteen young architects and designers who decided to improve houses in a working-class area of Liverpool without seeking a profit and thus won the prestigious Turner Prize), visual artist Femke Herregraven and Artist Renzo Martens don’t see it that way. Could it be we are only adapting our cultural experience? Which should inspire optimism. In order for art to continue to be relevant, it should connect to the social reality around us and revive itself through fresh commitment. Also with: Mark Nash & Isaac Julien (visual artists), Anthony Meacock and Lewis Jones (architects art collective Assemble) and Timothy Morton (philosopher).
This programme was made possible with the support of the Dutch Mediafund.

A Rift in the Earth: Art, Memory, and the Fight for a Vietnam War Memorial
James Reston Jr.'s A Rift in the Earth tells the remarkable story of the ferocious art war that raged between 1979 and 1984 over what kind of memorial should be built to honor the men and women who died in the Vietnam War. The story intertwines art, politics, historical memory, patriotism, racism, and a fascinating set of characters, from those who fought in the conflict and those who resisted it to politicians at the highest level. A book signing will follow the program.
“Remembering Vietnam” is presented in part by the Lawrence F. O’Brien Family, Pritzker Military Museum & Library, AARP, FedEx Corporation, and the National Archives Foundation. Additional support provided by the Maris S. Cuneo Foundation, The Eliasberg Family Foundation, Inc., and HISTORYⓇ.

Our Alaskan Cruise 2014 on Holland America's Amsterdam
This is the story of our family’s first adventure to Alaska, on Holland America’s cruise ship, the Amsterdam. On our way we would make a stop in Oregon for Trevor’s graduation, and pick up Nana, who would be our fellow-adventurer. We saw great sights on our Alaskan adventure: blue-ice glaciers, breeching whales, swooping bald eagles, monstrous crabs, beautiful mountains, great food, and great fun.
Our ports of call included Seattle, Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia. Shore excursions included the Mt. Roberts Tramway, humpback whale-watching off Lincoln Island, lunch at Orca Point Lodge on Colt Island, and a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau; the Sitka Sound Science Center and a concert at Harrigan Centennial Hall in Sitka; the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour and Creek Street in Ketchikan; High Tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, British Columbia.

Part of the Museum of Comparative Zoology’s 150th anniversary lecture series.
Presented by the Harvard Museum of Natural History.
