Teesta river in Sikkim, India
The Teesta River is said to be the lifeline of the Indian state of Sikkim, flowing for almost the entire length of the state and carving out verdant Himalayan temperate and tropical river valleys. The river then forms the border between Sikkim and West Bengal before joining the Brahmaputra as a tributary in Bangladesh. The total length of the river is 309 kilometres (192 mi). It drains an area of 12,540 square kilometres (4,840 sq mi). Before a large part of this was situated in Nepal. But after the Sugauli Treaty it was acceded to British India.
Through its course, the Teesta river has carved out ravines and gorges in Sikkim meandering through the hills with the hill station of Kalimpong lying just off the river. Variegated vegetation can be seen along this route. At lower elevations, tropical deciduous trees and shrubs cover the surrounding hills; alpine vegetation is seen at the upper altitudes. The river is flanked by white sand which is used by the construction industry in the region. Large boulders in and around the waters make it ideal for rafting enthusiasts.
Between Rangpo town and the railway bridge (popularly called Lohapul or iron bridge) on it as it enters the plains at Sevoke, the Teesta flows with a very strong current, ideal for white river rafting. Towns like Teesta Bazaar and Melli have facilities for group rafting. Though the river looks innocuous, the underlying current is very strong. In 1915, G.P. Robertson, the then Municipal Engineer of Darjeeling, drowned after losing control of the boat in the turbulence while surveying the river. The boat struck a partially hidden boulder and was sucked in by a whirlpool, leaving no trace of the occupants.
During the monsoons, Teesta river distends its banks; both in size and turbulence. Landslides in this region often dam up parts of the river in this season.

Hey everyone! I recently went on a trip to Sikkim with my family. During our trip to Sikkim, we explored Gangtok and the estern parts of Sikkim . Although I’ve been to Sikkim for the first time this trip was such a different experience, especially since I stayed and explored with a local.
This is the first video in my part series of Sikkim. In this video, we travel from Howrah to NGP, 1st night stayed at Kalimpong.

Kalimpong is a hill station in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located at elevation of 1,250 meters. The town is the headquarters of the Kalimpong district.

The Teesta River: A Photo Journey
The Teesta River flows through the length of Sikkim, India and is considered to be the lifeline of the state. The proposed 520 MW Teesta IV Dam is planned for the last free-flowing stretch of the Teesta River between the Teesta III Dam -- currently under construction -- and the Teesta V Dam, already completed. The proposed Teesta IV Dam and its construction, especially the intake tunnel, would destroy a sacred lake that is believed to be the heart of where a Lepcha clan (the original inhabitants of Sikkim) originated.The indigenous people of Sikkim continue to oppose the Teesta IV Dam, along with other hydropower development in the region, but they need our help. Please help spread the word about the threat to the Teesta River.

The Teesta River (or Tista River) is a 309 km (192 mi) long river flowing through the Indian states of West Bengal and Sikkim through Bangladesh before emptying to the Bay of Bengal. It carves out from the verdant Himalayas and Singalila in temperate and tropical river Valleys and forms the border between Sikkim and West Bengal. It flows through the cities of Rangpo, Jalpaiguri and Kalimpong and joins the Jamuna (Brahmaputra) in Bangladesh.It drains an area of 12,540 km2 (4,840 sq mi)
The Teesta River originates from the Pahunri (or Teesta Kangse) glacier above 7,068 metres (23,189 ft), and flows southward through gorges and rapids in the Sikkim Himalaya.[2]
It is fed by rivulets arising in the Thangu, Yumthang and Donkha mountain ranges. The river then flows past the town of Rangpo where the Rangpo River joins, and where it forms the border between Sikkim and West Bengal up to Teesta Bazaar. Just before the Teesta Bridge, where the roads from Kalimpong and Darjeeling join, the river is met by its main tributary, the Rangeet River.[3]

At this point, it changes course southwards flowing into West Bengal. The river hits the plains at Sevoke, 22 kilometres (14 mi) northeast of Siliguri, where it is spanned by the Coronation Bridge linking the northeast states to the rest of India. The river then goes merging up with the Brahmaputra River after it bifurcates the city of Jalpaiguri and flows just touching Cooch Behar district at Mekhliganj and moves to Fulchori in Bangladesh

Sikkim is a landlocked Indian state located in the Himalayan mountains. The state is bordered by Nepal to the west, China's Tibet Autonomous Region to the north and east, and Bhutan to the east. The Indian state of West Bengal lies to the south.
With 610,577 inhabitants as of the 2011 census, Sikkim is the least populous state in India and the second-smallest state after Goa in total area, covering approximately 7,096 km2 (2,740 sq mi). Sikkim is nonetheless geographically diverse due to its location in the Himalayas; the climate ranges from subtropical to high alpine, and Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak, is located on Sikkim's border with Nepal. Sikkim is a popular tourist destination, owing to its culture, scenery and biodiversity. It also has the only open land border between India and China. Sikkim's capital and largest city is Gangtok.
According to legend, the Buddhist guru Padmasambhava visited Sikkim in the 8th century AD, introduced Buddhism and foretold the era of the Sikkimese monarchy. Sikkim's Namgyal dynasty was established in 1642. Over the next 150 years, the kingdom witnessed frequent raids and territorial losses to Nepalese invaders. In the 19th century, it allied itself with British India, eventually becoming a British protectorate. In 1975, a referendum abolished the Sikkimese monarchy, and the territory was merged with India.
Sikkim has 11 official languages: Nepali (which is its lingua franca), Sikkimese, Lepcha, Tamang, Limbu, Newari, Rai, Gurung, Magar, Sunwar and English. English is taught in schools and used in government documents. The predominant religions are Hinduism and Vajrayana Buddhism. Sikkim's economy is largely dependent on agriculture and tourism, and as of 2014 the state had the third-smallest GDP among Indian states, although it is also among the fastest-growing.

River Teesta has swollen due to heavy rain once again and has created a panic among the citizens especially residing in river belt. Places like Chungthang, Singtam and many along the river are on high alert.
The authority of North District and East district has issued a strong word of warning.
Police are on duty to alert citizens.
Both the authority has warned the people saying 'Cloud burst have been reported to have occured somewhere in the upstream of dam of Teesta III Chungthang. Heavy inflow with muddy water and logs are expected at Dickchu Teesta V Dam from 2.30 pm on wards. Teesta III has released 600 Cumecs of water from its Chungathang Dam wef 12.30 pm. Accordingly Teesta V have to release heavy water from dam Teesta V wef 2.30 pm. People living in downstrem of Teesta V Dam specially Adarsh gaon Singtam (being low lying n adjacent to Teesta River)area may be informed by local administration to take adequate precation.Local police are being informed.
The people living in downstream under Rangpo PS jurisdiction have been alerted through beat Police. We sincerely urged all concerned to take necessary precautions

This is a clip of TRIVENI overnight camping we recently went to. This was a part of my bucket list. College life is the best, as a student we get to learn a lot and have fun together.. this camp taught us a lot. But most importantly made our bond stronger. This was our best experience at teesta river Sikkim. Definitely a must visit place.

Ride to North East India | CH05 - Cenobium | Darjeeling - Teesta River - Rumtek Monastery - Gangtok
Riding on the curves of a winding road from Darjeeling was fun as well as a thrilling experience. The narrow road passes through the small towns, beautiful forests and enormous tea gardens.
I stopped at one of the Tea Estate to take a closer look at the famous Darjeeling Tea plantations. The descending road has some interesting twists and colourful bridges adorned with prayer flags.
Soon I was riding along the mighty Teesta river but in reverse direction towards Sikkim. Before going to Gangtok, I decided to take a detour to visit a beautiful Rumtek Monastery.
Surprisingly, the Rumtek monastery was peaceful and devoid of any tourists except me. That was a good opportunity to observe the life of monks also study the colourful murals on the walls. Behind the monastery building, there is a Nalanda Institute of Higher Buddhist studies.
Later, I resumed my ride towards the Gangtok, a capital city of the mountain state of Sikkim. As I was late, the ropeway was closed so I visited Do-Drul Chorten monastery in Gangtok. After that, I strolled around the famous & vibrant MG Marg before heading back to the hotel.
Next morning, to get a bird's eye view of the Gangtok city, I went to Ganesh Tok at 6500 feet. Another higher point was Hanuman Tok from where the entire range of Kanchenjunga is visible on a clear day.
